Distributed Random Process for a Large-Scale Peer-to-Peer Lottery
Most online lotteries today fail to ensure the verifiability of the random
process and rely on a trusted third party. This issue has received little
attention since the emergence of distributed protocols like Bitcoin that
demonstrated the potential of protocols with no trusted third party. We argue
that the security requirements of online lotteries are similar to those of
online voting, and propose a novel distributed online lottery protocol that
applies techniques developed for voting applications to an existing lottery
protocol. As a result, the protocol is scalable, provides efficient
verification of the random process and does not rely on a trusted third party
nor on assumptions of bounded computational resources. An early prototype
confirms the feasibility of our approach

Thermal Properties of Isotopically Engineered Graphene
In addition to its exotic electronic properties graphene exhibits unusually
high intrinsic thermal conductivity. The physics of phonons - the main heat
carriers in graphene - was shown to be substantially different in
two-dimensional (2D) crystals, such as graphene, than in three-dimensional (3D)
graphite. Here, we report our experimental study of the isotope effects on the
thermal properties of graphene. Isotopically modified graphene containing
various percentages of 13C were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD).
The regions of different isotopic composition were parts of the same graphene
sheet to ensure uniformity in material parameters. The thermal conductivity, K,
of isotopically pure 12C (0.01% 13C) graphene determined by the optothermal
Raman technique, was higher than 4000 W/mK at the measured temperature Tm~320
K, and more than a factor of two higher than the value of K in a graphene
sheets composed of a 50%-50% mixture of 12C and 13C. The experimental data
agree well with our molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, corrected for the
long-wavelength phonon contributions via the Klemens model. The experimental
results are expected to stimulate further studies aimed at better understanding
of thermal phenomena in 2D crystals.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Use of facile mechanochemical method to functionalize carbon nanofibers with nanostructured polyaniline and their electrochemical capacitance
A facile approach to functionalize carbon nanofibers [CNFs] with nanostructured polyaniline was developed via in situ mechanochemical polymerization of polyaniline in the presence of chemically treated CNFs. The nanostructured polyaniline grafting on the CNF was mainly in a form of branched nanofibers as well as rough nanolayers. The good dispersibility and processability of the hybrid nanocomposite could be attributed to its overall nanostructure which enhanced its accessibility to the electrolyte. The mechanochemical oxidation polymerization was believed to be related to the strong Lewis acid characteristic of FeCl3 and the Lewis base characteristic of aniline. The growth mechanism of the hierarchical structured nanofibers was also discussed. After functionalization with the nanostructured polyaniline, the hybrid polyaniline/CNF composite showed an enhanced specific capacitance, which might be related to its hierarchical nanostructure and the interaction between the aromatic polyaniline molecules and the CNFs

No Interaction of Barrier-to-Autointegration Factor (BAF) with HIV-1 MA, Cone-Rod Homeobox (Crx) or MAN1-C in Absence of DNA
Barrier-to-autointegration factor is a cellular protein that protects retroviral DNA from autointegration. Its cellular role is not well understood, but genetic studies show that it is essential and depletion or knockout results in lethal nuclear defects. In addition to binding DNA, BAF interacts with the LEM domain, a domain shared among a family of lamin-associated polypeptides. BAF has also been reported to interact with several other viral and cellular proteins suggesting that these interactions may be functionally relevant. We find that, contrary to previous reports, BAF does not interact with HIV-1 MA, cone-rod homeobox (Crx) or MAN1-C. The reported interactions can be explained by indirect association through DNA binding and are unlikely to be biologically relevant. A mutation that causes a premature aging syndrome lies on the previously reported MAN1-C binding surface of BAF. The absence of direct binding of BAF to MAN1-C eliminates disruption of this interaction as the cause of the premature aging phenotype

Fiber-optic parametric amplifier and oscillator based on intracavity parametric pump technique
Chinese Government Scholarship of Postgraduates' Oversea Study For Building High-Level UniversityA cost-effective fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) based on the laser intracavity pump technique has been proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The parametric process is realized by inserting a 1 km highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber (HNL-DSF) into a fiber ring-laser cavity that consists of a high-power erbium-doped fiber (EDF) amplifier and two highly reflective fiber Bragg gratings. Compared with the conventional parametric pump schemes, the proposed pumping technique is free from a tunable semiconductor laser as the pump source and also the pump phase modulation. When the oscillating power of 530 mW in the EDF laser cavity is achieved to pump the HNL-DSF, a peak parametric gain of 27.5 dB and a net gain over 45 nm are obtained. Moreover, a widely tunable fiber-optic parametric oscillator is further developed using the FOPA as a gain medium. (C) 2009 Optical Society of Americ
First observation of psi(2S)-->K_S K_L
The decay psi(2S)-->K_S K_L is observed for the first time using psi(2S) data
collected with the Beijing Spectrometer (BESII) at the Beijing Electron
Positron Collider (BEPC); the branching ratio is determined to be
B(psi(2S)-->K_S K_L) = (5.24\pm 0.47 \pm 0.48)\times 10^{-5}. Compared with
J/psi-->K_S K_L, the psi(2S) branching ratio is enhanced relative to the
prediction of the perturbative QCD ``12%'' rule. The result, together with the
branching ratios of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs
(\pi^+\pi^- and K^+K^-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the
three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
