    It is now an accepted fact that in the 21st century competition will be between networks of organisations and individuals, which efficiently and effectively integrate their competencies and resources in order to compete in a global economy (Bititci et al, 2004). Similarly the SME'2000 conference, which was held in Bologna, concluded that 'SMEs belonging to networks are often more competitive and innovative than those operating in isolation. When working together, SMEs can increase their focus through specialisation in functions that are complementary within their networks'

    Diquarks: condensation without bound states

    We employ a bispinor gap equation to study superfluidity at nonzero chemical potential: mu .neq. 0, in two- and three-colour QCD. The two-colour theory, QC2D, is an excellent exemplar: the order of truncation of the quark-quark scattering kernel: K, has no qualitative impact, which allows a straightforward elucidation of the effects of mu when the coupling is strong. In rainbow-ladder truncation, diquark bound states appear in the spectrum of the three-colour theory, a defect that is eliminated by an improvement of K. The corrected gap equation describes a superfluid phase that is semi-quantitatively similar to that obtained using the rainbow truncation. A model study suggests that the width of the superfluid gap and the transition point in QC2D provide reliable quantitative estimates of those quantities in QCD.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, REVTEX, epsfi

    On the Analytic Structure of the Quark Self-Energy in Nambu-Jona- Lasinio Models

    The self-energy of quarks is investigated for various models which are inspired by the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Including, beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation, terms up to second-order in the quark interaction, the real and imaginary parts of scalar and vector components of the self-energy are discussed. The second-order contributions depend on the energy and momentum of the quark under consideration. This leads to solutions of the Dirac equation which are significantly different from those of a free quark or a quark with constant effective mass, as obtained in the Hartree-Fock approximation.Comment: 15 pages LaTeX, 6 figures can be obtained from author

    The Calculation of Vacuum Properties from the Global Color Symmetry Model

    A modified method for calculating the non-perturbative quark vacuum condensates from the global color symmetry model is derived. Within this approach it is shown that the vacuum condensates are free of ultraviolet divergence which is different from previous studies. As a special, the two-quark condensate and the mixed quark-gluon condensate are calculated. A comparision with the results of the other nonperturbative QCD approaches is given.Comment: 17 page

    Discordance between the Sexual Experiences Surveys-Short Forms and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales in College Men

    Objective: Sexual victimization affects at least one in five college women and up to one in six college men; however, the exact rates of sexual perpetration are difficult to ascertain because of inconsistencies in the measurement of these behaviors. The present study is the first to evaluate the extent to which three commonly used measures of sexual violence (The Sexual Experiences Survey- Short Form Victimization (SES-SFV), The Sexual Experiences Survey-Short Form Perpetration (SES-SFP) and the Revised Conflicts Tactics Scales-Sexual Coercion Subscale (CTS2-SC)) concurred in identifying cases of sexual victimization and sexual perpetration. This is the first study to simultaneously examine victimization and perpetration, provide kappa estimates of discordance, and control for order of survey administration effects. Methods: Undergraduate men (N = 397) completed the study measures in a randomized order. Results: The SES-SFV identified 109 cases of sexual victimization (27.5% of the sample) while the CTS2-SC identified 164 cases (41.3% of the sample). Results were similar for sexual perpetration. There was no effect of the order of administration on sexual victimization reports. However, there was an order effect for sexual perpetration. When the CTS2-SC was administered first response rates on the CTS2-SC were higher. Conclusions: These results highlight the lack of precision in the measurement of sexual violence. Conceptually, the SESs should identify a greater number of cases; yet we consistently found that the CTS2-SC identified more cases of sexual violence. We suggest that differences in the instructional cues, internal item structure, and measure structure may account for these differences

    Tomographic imaging and scanning thermal microscopy: thermal impedance tomography

    The application of tomographic imaging techniques developed for medical applications to the data provided by the scanning thermal microscope will give access to true three-dimensional information on the thermal properties of materials on a mm length scale. In principle, the technique involves calculating and inverting a sensitivity matrix for a uniform isotropic material, collecting ordered data at several modulation frequencies, and multiplying the inverse of the matrix with the data vector. In practice, inversion of the matrix in impractical, and a novel iterative technique is used. Examples from both simulated and real data are given

    UV induces resistance in Arabidopsis Thaliana to the Oomycete Pathogen Hyaloperonospora Parasitica

    Owing to their sessile nature, plants have evolved mechanisms to minimise the damaging effects of abiotic and biotic stresses. Attack by pathogenic fungi, viruses and bacterium is a major type of biotic stress. To resist infection, plants recognise invading pathogens and induce disease resistance through multiple signal transduction pathways. In addition, appropriate stimulation can cause plants to increase their resistance to future pathogen attack. We have found that exposure to non-lethal doses of UV-C (254 nm) renders a normally susceptible ecotype of Arabidopsis thaliana resistant to the biotrophic Oomycete pathogen Hyaloperonospora parasitica. The UV treatment induces an incompatible response in a dose-dependent fashion, and is still effective upon pathogen inoculation up to seven days after UV exposure. The degree of resistance diminishes with time but higher doses result in greater levels of resistance, even after seven days. Furthermore, the effect is systemic, occurring in parts of the plant that have not been irradiated. Incubation in the dark post?irradiation and prior to infection reduces the UV dose required to generate a specific level of pathogen resistance without affecting the duration of resistance. These observations, plus the inability of plants to photoreactivate UV photoproducts in the dark, strongly suggest that DNA damage induces the resistance phenotype. Currently, we are assessing the influence of DNA repair defects on UV-induced resistance, following the expression of a number of defence?related genes post-UV-C irradiation, and assessing the effect of UV in plant mutants deficient in specific signalling molecules involved in resistance.<br /
