    Feasibility and safety of physical exercise in men with prostate cancer receiving androgen deprivation therapy and radiotherapy: A study protocol

    Introduction Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiotherapy (RT) increase survival in selected patients with prostate cancer. Nevertheless, the side effects of these therapies are associated with an increased risk of accidental falls and fractures and a decreased quality of life. Preliminary evidence suggests that physical exercise can be a valid strategy to reduce the side effects of ADT and RT in men with prostate cancer. Despite this knowledge, most patients with prostate cancer are insufficiently active, and there is a lack of data on the safety and adherence to the recommended dose of physical exercise. This study protocol is designed to examine the feasibility and safety of a multicomponent experimental physical exercise intervention targeting psychophysical and cognitive functions and the quality of life in this population. Methods and analysis This is a pilot feasibility study. Twenty-five men currently treated with ADT and RT for prostate cancer will be invited to participate in a 20-week, multicomponent physical exercise intervention, including supervised and unsupervised exercise sessions and meeting the current recommendation for exercise in cancer. The primary outcomes are physical exercise feasibility (recruitment, adherence and drop-out rates) and safety (adverse events related and unrelated to the intervention). The secondary outcomes are muscle strength, balance, fatigue, symptoms of anxiety and depression, cognitive function, quality of life, and patient satisfaction. We will also record the number of accidental falls and fractures occurring during the intervention and at 1 year of follow-up. Ethics and dissemination The study has received ethics approval from The Area Vasta Nord Local Ethics Committee (Province of Reggio Emilia, 23 June 2020, Number 520/2020/SPER/IRCCSRE). Recruitment began in September 2020 and will be completed in September 2021. The results will be disseminated through scientific journals and conference presentations.     Euclid : Constraining ensemble photometric redshift distributions with stacked spectroscopy

    Context. The ESA Euclid mission will produce photometric galaxy samples over 15 000 square degrees of the sky that will be rich for clustering and weak lensing statistics. The accuracy of the cosmological constraints derived from these measurements will depend on the knowledge of the underlying redshift distributions based on photometric redshift calibrations. Aims. A new approach is proposed to use the stacked spectra from Euclid slitless spectroscopy to augment broad-band photometric information to constrain the redshift distribution with spectral energy distribution fitting. The high spectral resolution available in the stacked spectra complements the photometry and helps to break the colour-redshift degeneracy and constrain the redshift distribution of galaxy samples. Methods. We modelled the stacked spectra as a linear mixture of spectral templates. The mixture may be inverted to infer the underlying redshift distribution using constrained regression algorithms. We demonstrate the method on simulated Vera C. Rubin Observatory and Euclid mock survey data sets based on the Euclid Flagship mock galaxy catalogue. We assess the accuracy of the reconstruction by considering the inference of the baryon acoustic scale from angular two-point correlation function measurements. Results. We selected mock photometric galaxy samples at redshift z>1 using the self-organising map algorithm. Considering the idealised case without dust attenuation, we find that the redshift distributions of these samples can be recovered with 0.5% accuracy on the baryon acoustic scale. The estimates are not significantly degraded by the spectroscopic measurement noise due to the large sample size. However, the error degrades to 2% when the dust attenuation model is left free. We find that the colour degeneracies introduced by attenuation limit the accuracy considering the wavelength coverage of Euclid near-infrared spectroscopy.Peer reviewe

    Feasibility and Safety of Physical Exercise to Preserve Bone Health in Men With Prostate Cancer Receiving Androgen Deprivation Therapy: A Systematic Review

    Objective: Men with prostate cancer (PCa) receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) experience the loss of bone mineral density (BMD) and lean body mass, which can increase their risk of falls and fractures. Physical exercise programs with appropriate components and dosage are suggested to preserve BMD and muscle strength, thereby potentially reducing accidental falls and fractures and associated morbidity and mortality. These benefits can be obtained if exercise programs are feasible and safe and if patient adherence is adequate. This systematic review investigates the feasibility and safety of exercise programs aimed at preventing the risk of accidental falls and fractures and BMD loss in men with PCa undergoing ADT. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library were searched from database inception to June 7, 2021. Randomized controlled trials were included when they analyzed the feasibility and safety of experimental exercise programs targeting bone health in men with PCa receiving ADT. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, assessed their methodological quality, and extracted the data. Exercise feasibility was measured through recruitment, retention, and adherence rates. Exercise safety was measured through the number, type, and severity of adverse events. Furthermore, the components, setting, intensity, frequency, and duration of exercise programs were extracted. Results: Ten studies were included, with a total of 633 participants. Exercise consisted of a combination of aerobic, resistance, and impact-loading exercise or football training. Exercise is feasible in men with PCa undergoing ADT, although football training should be prescribed with caution for safety reasons. Conclusion: Multicomponent exercise programs targeting bone health seem feasible and safe in this population; however, adverse events should be systematically documented according to current guidelines. Impact: The study shows that men with PCa receiving ADT can safely perform exercise programs to preserve bone health and supports that those programs should become part of lifestyle habits.     Augmenting photometric redshift estimates using spectroscopic nearest neighbours

    As a consequence of galaxy clustering, close galaxies observed on the plane of the sky should be spatially correlated with a probability that is inversely proportional to their angular separation. In principle, this information can be used to improve photometric redshift estimates when spectroscopic redshifts are available for some of the neighbouring objects. Depending on the depth of the survey, however, this angular correlation is reduced by chance projections. In this work, we implement a deep-learning model to distinguish between apparent and real angular neighbours by solving a classification task. We adopted a graph neural network architecture to tie together photometry, spectroscopy, and the spatial information between neighbouring galaxies. We trained and validated the algorithm on the data of the VIPERS galaxy survey, for which photometric redshifts based on spectral energy distribution are also available. The model yields a confidence level for a pair of galaxies to be real angular neighbours, enabling us to disentangle chance superpositions in a probabilistic way. When objects for which no physical companion can be identified are excluded, all photometric redshift quality metrics improve significantly, confirming that their estimates were of lower quality. For our typical test configuration, the algorithm identifies a subset containing ~75% high-quality photometric redshifts, for which the dispersion is reduced by as much as 50% (from 0.08 to 0.04), while the fraction of outliers reduces from 3% to 0.8%. Moreover, we show that the spectroscopic redshift of the angular neighbour with the highest detection probability provides an excellent estimate of the redshift of the target galaxy, comparable to or even better than the corresponding template-fitting estimate.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures, matching the accepted version.     Conteúdos linguísticos como subsídio à formação de professores alfabetizadores: a experiência do Brasil e de Portugal

    Objetiva identificar em dois programas de formação de professores alfabetizadores – no Brasil, Pacto Nacional pela Alfabetização na Idade Certa (Pnaic) e, em Portugal, Programa Nacional do Ensino do Português (Pnep) – os conteúdos linguísticos relacionados ao ensino da leitura que fundamentaram a atualização dos professores com vistas a compreender como as descobertas científicas penetram o campo pedagógico. Por meio de análise documental, são apresentadas, de forma resumida, a estrutura e a organização dos dois programas e os respectivos conteúdos de formação. Há muita similaridade entre os dois programas com relação à organização e às estratégias metodológicas e há diferenças importantes quanto à atualidade dos conteúdos oferecidos aos professores alfabetizadores, assim como o tempo de formação aplicado a este conteúdo. A formação linguística do professor é essencial para desenvolver competência para o ensino da língua e, por conseguinte, melhorar as habilidades de ler e escrever dos alunos do ensino fundamental.This article aims to identify the linguistic contents related to the teaching of reading in two training programs for literacy teachers: Brazil’s National Pact for Literacy at the Right Age (Pacto Nacional pela Alfabetização na Idade Certa – Pnaic) and the National Program for Portuguese Teaching (Programa Nacional do Ensino do Português – Pnep) of Portugal. The focus is on the linguistic contents that served as foundation for the updating of teachers, in order to understand how scientific discoveries permeate the teaching field. Through documentary analysis, the structure and the organization of the two programs and their respective training contents are briefly presented. There are many similarities between the two programs, regarding the organization and the methodological strategies; but there are also differences in relation to the timeliness of the content offered to the literacy teachers, as well as to the duration of the training applied to the content.
