    Nonlinear resonant absorption of fast magnetoacoustic waves in strongly anisotropic and dispersive plasmas

    The nonlinear theory of driven magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) waves in strongly anisotropic and dispersive plasmas, developed for slow resonance by Clack and Ballai [Phys. Plasmas 15, 2310 (2008)] and Alfvén resonance by Clack et al. [Astron. Astrophys. 494, 317 (2009)] , is used to study the weakly nonlinear interaction of fast magnetoacoustic (FMA) waves in a one-dimensional planar plasma. The magnetic configuration consists of an inhomogeneous magnetic slab sandwiched between two regions of semi-infinite homogeneous magnetic plasmas. Laterally driven FMA waves penetrate the inhomogeneous slab interacting with the localized slow or Alfvén dissipative layer and are partly reflected, dissipated, and transmitted by this region. The nonlinearity parameter defined by Clack and Ballai (2008) is assumed to be small and a regular perturbation method is used to obtain analytical solutions in the slow dissipative layer. The effect of dispersion in the slow dissipative layer is to further decrease the coefficient of energy absorption, compared to its standard weakly nonlinear counterpart, and the generation of higher harmonics in the outgoing wave in addition to the fundamental one. The absorption of external drivers at the Alfvén resonance is described within the linear MHD with great accuracy

    Aqueye optical observations of the Crab Nebula pulsar

    We observed the Crab pulsar in October 2008 at the Copernico Telescope in Asiago - Cima Ekar with the optical photon counter Aqueye (the Asiago Quantum Eye) which has the best temporal resolution and accuracy ever achieved in the optical domain (hundreds of picoseconds). Our goal was to perform a detailed analysis of the optical period and phase drift of the main peak of the Crab pulsar and compare it with the Jodrell Bank ephemerides. We determined the position of the main peak using the steepest zero of the cross-correlation function between the pulsar signal and an accurate optical template. The pulsar rotational period and period derivative have been measured with great accuracy using observations covering only a 2 day time interval. The error on the period is 1.7 ps, limited only by the statistical uncertainty. Both the rotational frequency and its first derivative are in agreement with those from the Jodrell Bank radio ephemerides archive. We also found evidence of the optical peak leading the radio one by ~230 microseconds. The distribution of phase-residuals of the whole dataset is slightly wider than that of a synthetic signal generated as a sequence of pulses distributed in time with the probability proportional to the pulse shape, such as the average count rate and background level are those of the Crab pulsar observed with Aqueye. The counting statistics and quality of the data allowed us to determine the pulsar period and period derivative with great accuracy in 2 days only. The time of arrival of the optical peak of the Crab pulsar leads the radio one in agreement with what recently reported in the literature. The distribution of the phase residuals can be approximated with a Gaussian and is consistent with being completely caused by photon noise (for the best data sets).Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures.     Precession Interpretation of the Isolated Pulsar PSR B1828-11

    Pulse timing of the isolated pulsar PSR B1882-11 shows strong Fourier power at periods ~1000, 500 and 250 d, correlated with changes in the pulse profile (Stairs, Lyne & Shemar 2000). We study the extent to which these data can be explained by precession of the star's rigid crust coupled to the magnetic dipole torque. We find that the correlated changes in the pulse duration and spin period derivative can be explained as precession at a period of ~500 d with a wobble angle of ~3 deg if the star's dipole moment is nearly orthogonal to its symmetry axis. The dipole torque produces a harmonic at ~250 d. Comparison of the predicted spin dynamics with the observed pulse durations requires the radio beam to have a non-standard ``hour-glass'' shape. We make predictions of variations in beam polarization and pulse profile with which to test this interpretation. The precession interpretation of PSR B1828-11 seriously challenges the current understanding of the liquid interior of the neutron star. In particular, if the internal liquid is in a superfluid state, its rotational vortices cannot be significantly pinned to the crust.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    Yeast biodiversity in vineyard environments is increased by human intervention

    One hundred and five grape samples were collected during two consecutive years from 33 locations on seven oceanic islands of the Azores Archipelago. Grape samples were obtained from vineyards that were either abandoned or under regular cultivation involving common viticultural interventions, to evaluate the impact of regular human intervention on grape yeast biota diversity in vineyards. A total of 3150 yeast isolates were obtained and 23 yeast species were identified. The predominant species were Hanseniaspora uvarum, Pichia terricola, Starmerella bacillaris and Issatchenkia hanoiensis. The species Barnettozyma californica, Candida azymoides and Pichia cecembensis were reported in grapes or wine-associated environments for the first time. A higher biodiversity was found in active vineyards where regular human intervention takes place (Shannon index: 1.89 and 1.53 in the first and second years, respectively) when compared to the abandoned ones (Shannon index: 0.76 and 0.31). This finding goes against the assumptions that human intervention can destroy biodiversity and lead to homogeneity in the environment. Biodiversity indices were considerably lower in the year with the heaviest rainfall.     Association between Grape Yeast Communities and the Vineyard Ecosystems

    The grape yeast biota from several wine-producing areas, with distinct soil types and grapevine training systems, was assessed on five islands of Azores Archipelago, and differences in yeast communities composition associated with the geographic origin of the grapes were explored. Fifty-seven grape samples belonging to the Vitis vinifera grapevine cultivars Verdelho dos Acores (Verdelho), Arinto da Terceira (Arinto) and Terrantez do Pico (Terrantez) were collected in two consecutive years and 40 spontaneous fermentations were achieved. A total of 1710 yeast isolates were obtained from freshly crushed grapes and 1200 from final stage of fermentations. Twenty-eight species were identified, Hanseniaspura uvarum, Pichia terricola and Metschnikowia pulcherrima being the three most representative species isolated. Candida carpophila was encountered for the first time as an inhabitant of grape or wine-associated environments. In both sampling years, a higher proportion of H. uvarum in fresh grapes from Verdelho cultivar was observed, in comparison with Arinto cultivar. Qualitatively significant differences were found among yeast communities from several locations on five islands of the Archipelago, particularly in locations with distinctive agro-ecological compositions. Our results are in agreement with the statement that grape-associated microbial biogeography is non-randomly associated with interactions of climate, soil, cultivar, and vine training systems in vineyard ecosystems.     Merging algorithm to reduce dimensionality in application to web-mining

    Dimensional reduction may be effective in order to compress data without loss of essential information. It is proposed to reduce dimension (number of the used web-areas or vroots) as a result of the unsupervised learning process maximizing a specially defined average log-likelihood divergence. Two different web-areas will be merged in the case if these areas appear together frequently during the same sessions. Essentially, roles of the web-areas are not symmetrical in the merging process. The web-area or cluster with bigger weight will act as an attractor and will stimulate merging. In difference, the smaller cluster will try to keep independence. In both cases the powers of attraction or resistance will depend on the weights of the corresponding clusters. The above strategy will prevent creation of one super-big cluster, and will help to reduce the number of non-significant clusters. The proposed method is illustrated using two synthetic examples. The first example is based on an ideal vlink matrix, which characterizes weights of the vroots and relations between them. The vlink matrix for the second example is generated using a specially designed web-traffic simulator
