    Peer Mentors and Writing Center Tutors: What our collaborations taught us about serving the SJSU Freshmen Students

    The Library Outpost, a satellite office of the campus’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, seeks ways to reach out to First Year students who are new to writing research papers. One of our goals is to meet the First Year students on their own turf. Since the Peer Mentors and Writing Center tutors have peer relationships with the First year students, we want to learn how we can collaborate with them to provide services to the First year students. We surveyed the Peer Mentors and Writing Center Tutors to assess their perceptions of their own research skills, and their students’ research needs to guide the services and workshops offered by the Library Outpost

    The dynastine scarab genera Parapucaya Prell and Pucaya Ohaus have been historically classified in Pentodontini; however, that tribal classification is not supported under the current tribal circumscriptions. A discussion justifying the transfer of the genera Parapucaya and Pucaya from Pentodontini into Cyclocephalini is presented. This research is based on morphological observations (mandible shape and wing characters among others) and molecular data (genes 28S, COI, and 16S/ND1). A review of both genera is included, providing descriptions, diagnoses, distribution data, illustrations, and keys to species. A revised key to the world genera of Cyclocephalini is also included. Los escarabajos de los géneros Parapucaya Prell y Pucaya Ohaus, de la subfamilia Dynastinae, han sido históricamente clasificados en la tribu Pentodontini; sin embargo, esa clasificación no se ajusta a la circunscripción actual de la tribu. Se presenta una discusión justificando la transferencia de los géneros Parapucaya y Pucaya de Pentodontini a Cyclocephalini.     Extended phase space thermodynamics for hairy black holes

    We expand our results in \cite{Astefanesei:2019ehu} to investigate a general class of exact hairy black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity. The dilaton is endowed with a potential that originates from an electromagnetic Fayet-Iliopoulos term in N=2\mathcal{N} = 2 extended supergravity in four spacetime dimensions. We present the usual thermodynamics by using the counterterm method supplemented with boundary terms for a scalar field with mixed boundary conditions. We then extend our analysis by considering a dynamical cosmological constant and verify the isoperimetric inequality. We obtain a very rich phase diagram and criticality in both the canonical and grand canonical ensembles. Within string theory, the cosmological constant is related to the radius of the external sphere (of the compactification) and can be interpreted as a modulus. In this context, the existence of a critical value hints to the fact that the thermodynamic properties of black holes in lower dimensions depend on the size of the compactification.Comment: 23 pages, 18 figure

    Exercise bouts at three different intensities fail to potentiate concentric power

    Postactivation potentiation (PAP) has been hypothesized previously to occur during voluntary, concentric actions. We tested the hypothesis that one of at least three different intensities of conditioning exercises would evoke potentiation of power during the concentric, bench press throw (BPT). Twelve men (age = 22.9 &#; 2.7 years, bench press 1 repetition maximum (1RM) = 1.20 ± 0.12 kg•kg-1 body weight) completed five isotonic conditioning presses at ~55, 70, and 86% 1RM, in counterbalanced order, and on separate days. Average and peak power of the BPT using a load of 55% 1RM along with surface electromyography (EMG) of the triceps brachii were collected prior to and 4-minutes following each conditioning bout. Both average and peak power and EMG values (mean ± SD), respectively, were evaluated using two-way analyses of variance with repeated measures. Significant main effect decreases (p \u3c 0.05) in average (-18.6 ± 4.9 W) and peak power (-37.4 ± 9.9 W) occurred across the three different intensities evaluated. No main effects or interactions were observed with the EMG data. Contrary to the previously reported hypothesis, we were unable to demonstrate that conditioning exercise, with three different intensities, can evoke potentiation of power using a load equating to that which is optimum for power production

    Boundary conditions generated by dynamic particles in SPH methods

    Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics is a purely Lagrangian method that can be applied to a wide variety of fields. The foundation and properties of the so called dynamic boundary particles (DBPs) are described in this paper. These boundary particles share the same equations of continuity and state as the moving particles placed inside the domain, although their positions and velocities remain unaltered in time or are externally prescribed. Theoretical and numerical calculations were carried out to study the collision between a moving particle and a boundary particle. The boundaries were observed to behave in an elastic manner in absence of viscosity. They allow the fluid particles to approach till a critical distance depending on the energy of the incident particle. In addition, a dam break confined in a box was used to check the validity of the approach. The good agreement between experiments and numerical results shows the reliability of DBPs
