Growth and physiological responses to water and nutrient stress in oil palm
The research was conducted to detect changes in growth, physiology and nutrient concentration in response to two watering regimes (well-watered and water-stress conditions) and to two nutrient regimes (with or without fertilization) of oil palm. Under stress conditions, changes in plant growth, dry matter allocation, relative water content, leaf relative conductivity, leaf N, P and K concentration are usually observed. These characteristics and related parameters were determined and the experiment results are listed as follows: (1) fertilization promoted the growth of oil palm under well-watered conditions, while under water stress conditions its effects on growth was negative. The ratio of root/shoot was increased under water stress condition; (2) relative water content and chlorophyll a/b content were gradually decreased while leaf relative conductivity was increased quickly under water and nutrient stress conditions during the experiment. It is obvious that water stress had a greater influence than nutrient stress on these parameters; (3) water and nutrient stress decreased leaf nitrogen and phosphorus concentration but increased potassium concentration; the combination of water and nutrient stress made significant effects on nitrogen and phosphorus concentration, but no significant effects on potassium concentration. Moreover, deficiency of both water and nutrients in combination had the greatest impact on changes in these traits of oil palm.Key words: Plant growth, physiology response, nutrient concentration, water stress, nutrient stress

Detection of Oxidation Products of 5-Methyl-2′-Deoxycytidine in Arabidopsis DNA
Epigenetic regulations play important roles in plant development and adaptation to environmental stress. Recent studies
from mammalian systems have demonstrated the involvement of ten-eleven translocation (Tet) family of dioxygenases in
the generation of a series of oxidized derivatives of 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) in mammalian DNA. In addition, these oxidized
5-mC nucleobases have important roles in epigenetic remodeling and aberrant levels of 5-hydroxymethyl-29-deoxycytidine
(5-HmdC) were found to be associated with different types of human cancers. However, there is a lack of evidence
supporting the presence of these modified bases in plant DNA. Here we reported the use of a reversed-phase HPLC coupled
with tandem mass spectrometry method and stable isotope-labeled standards for assessing the levels of the oxidized 5-mC
nucleosides along with two other oxidatively induced DNA modifications in genomic DNA of Arabidopsis. These included 5-
HmdC, 5-formyl-29-deoxycytidine (5-FodC), 5-carboxyl-29-deoxycytidine (5-CadC), 5-hydroxymethyl-29-deoxyuridine (5-
HmdU), and the (59S) diastereomer of 8,59-cyclo-29-deoxyguanosine (S-cdG). We found that, in Arabidopsis DNA, the levels
of 5-HmdC, 5-FodC, and 5-CadC are approximately 0.8 modifications per 106 nucleosides, with the frequency of 5-HmdC
(per 5-mdC) being comparable to that of 5-HmdU (per thymidine). The relatively low levels of the 5-mdC oxidation products
suggest that they arise likely from reactive oxygen species present in cells, which is in line with the lack of homologous Tetfamily

Higgs boson production in photon-photon collision at ILC: a comparative study in different little Higgs models
We study the process \gamma\gamma->h->bb_bar at ILC as a probe of different
little Higgs models, including the simplest little Higgs model (SLH), the
littlest Higgs model (LH), and two types of littlest Higgs models with T-parity
(LHT-I, LHT-II). Compared with the Standard Model (SM) prediction, the
production rate is found to be sizably altered in these little Higgs models
and, more interestingly, different models give different predictions. We find
that the production rate can be possibly enhanced only in the LHT-II for some
part of the parameter space, while in all other cases the rate is suppressed.
The suppression can be 10% in the LH and as much as 60% in both the SLH and the
LHT-I/LHT-II. The severe suppression in the SLH happens for a large \tan\beta
and a small m_h, in which the new decay mode h->\eta\eta (\eta is a light
pseudo-scalar) is dominant; while for the LHT-I/LHT-II the large suppression
occurs when f and m_h are both small so that the new decay mode h->A_H A_H is
dominant. Therefore, the precision measurement of such a production process at
the ILC will allow for a test of these models and even distinguish between
different scenarios.Comment: Version in JHEP (h-g-g & h-gamma-gamma expressions added
A general strategy for synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles attached on carbon nanomaterials
We report a general strategy for synthesis of a large variety of metal oxide nanoparticles on different carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), including single-walled carbon nanotubes, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and a few-layer graphene. The approach was based on the π-π interaction between CNMs and modified aromatic organic ligands, which acted as bridges connecting metal ions and CNMs. Our methods can be applicable for a large variety of metal ions, thus offering a great potential application
Synthesis of Novel Flower-Like Zn(OH)F via a Microwave-Assisted Ionic Liquid Route and Transformation into Nanoporous ZnO by Heat Treatment
Zinc hydroxide fluoride (Zn(OH)F) with novel flower-like morphology has been prepared via a microwave-assisted ionic liquid route. The flower-like Zn(OH)F particle has six petals and every petal is composed of lots of acicular nano-structure. Nanoporous ZnO is obtained by thermal decomposition of as-prepared Zn(OH)F in air, and the flower-like morphology is well retained. In the process of synthesis, ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate is used as both the reactant and the template
Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width
values do not match with those of any known meson resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics
A Built-In Mechanism to Mitigate the Spread of Insect-Resistance and Herbicide-Tolerance Transgenes into Weedy Rice Populations
BACKGROUND: The major challenge of cultivating genetically modified (GM) rice (Oryza sativa) at the commercial scale is to prevent the spread of transgenes from GM cultivated rice to its coexisting weedy rice (O. sativa f. spontanea). The strategic development of GM rice with a built-in control mechanism can mitigate transgene spread in weedy rice populations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: An RNAi cassette suppressing the expression of the bentazon detoxifying enzyme CYP81A6 was constructed into the T-DNA which contained two tightly linked transgenes expressing the Bt insecticidal protein Cry1Ab and the glyphosate tolerant 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), respectively. GM rice plants developed from this T-DNA were resistant to lepidopteran pests and tolerant to glyphosate, but sensitive to bentazon. The application of bentazon of 2000 mg/L at the rate of 40 mL/m(2), which is approximately the recommended dose for the field application to control common rice weeds, killed all F(2) plants containing the transgenes generated from the Crop-weed hybrids between a GM rice line (CGH-13) and two weedy rice strains (PI-63 and PI-1401). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Weedy rice plants containing transgenes from GM rice through gene flow can be selectively killed by the spray of bentazon when a non-GM rice variety is cultivated alternately in a few-year interval. The built-in control mechanism in combination of cropping management is likely to mitigate the spread of transgenes into weedy rice populations
