Decay properties of the heavy-light mesons
We study the decay properties of a heavy-light meson. We reformulate the
decay amplitudes for the heavy-light systems and find a new way to calculate
decay rates. Applying this formulation, we find a new sum rule for the
radiative decays of one heavy-light meson into another,

Optical response of grain boundaries in upgraded metallurgical-grade silicon for photovoltaics
Using upgraded metallurgical-grade silicon (UMG-Si) is a cost-effective and energy-efficient approach for the production of solar cells. Grain boundaries (GBs) play a major role in determining the device performance of multicrystalline Si (mc-Si) solar cells. In this study two UMG-Si wafers, one from the middle part of a brick and the other from the top part of the same brick, were investigated. An excellent correlation was found between the grain misorientation and the corresponding optical response of GBs as indicated by photoluminescence (PL) imaging, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the PL features at random GBs depend also on the impurity levels in the wafer. In particular the PL emission was greatly enhanced in the narrow regions close to the random GB in the top wafer, which is an interesting phenomenon that may have potential application in high efficiency light-emission diodes (LEDs) based on Si. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.postprin
Carrier depletion and grain misorientations on individual grain boundaries of polycrystalline si thin films
Structural and microelectrical properties of grain boundaries (GBs) in polycrystalline Si thin films were investigated by electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) and scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM). The SCM measurements revealed highly nonuniform carrier depletions among the GBs, indicating the variety of electrical properties due to the specific GB structures. The EBSD measurement showed that the films are weakly [001]-oriented with small fractions of grains in the [111] and [110] orientations. Comparison of the SCM and EBSD measurements taken on the same film area led to the following observations: (1) Σ3 GBs do not exhibit carrier depletions and thus do not have charged deep levels; (2) Some Σ9 GBs exhibit carrier depletions and some do not, indicating that the intrinsic Σ9 GBs do not have charged deep levels and the carrier depletions are due to impurity gettering at the GBs; (3) No significant relationship between the carrier depletion behavior and the grain misorientationwas found so far on the GBs with random misorientations; (4) The carrier depletion behavior does not depend only on the grain misorientation but also on the facet where the GB is taken. ©2009 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 34th IEEE Conference on Photovoltaic Specialists (PVSC 2009), Philadelphia, PA., 7-12 June 2009. Male germ cell-specific protein Trs4 binds to multiple proteins
Temperature-related sequence 4 (Trs4) has been identified as a testis-specific gene with expression sensitive to the abdominal temperature changes induced by artificial cryptorchidism. In murine testes, Trs4 mRNA was detected in round spermatids and its protein was localized mainly in the elongating spermatids as well as in the acrosomes and tails of mature spermatozoa. Using a yeast two-hybrid screening system, we identified Rshl-2, Gstmu1, and Ddc8 as putative binding partners of the Trs4 protein in mouse testes. Their interactions were confirmed by in vivo and in vitro binding assays. Further studies demonstrated that Ddc8, a newly identified gene with unknown functions, displayed a similar expression pattern with Trs4 in mouse testes. In particular, Trs4, Ddc8, and Rshl-2 proteins were co-localized to the tails of mature spermatozoa. These results suggested that Trs4 might be involved in diverse processes of spermiogenesis and/or fertilization through interactions with its multiple binding partners. © 2009 Elsevier Inc.postprin
Characterizing Interdisciplinarity of Researchers and Research Topics Using Web Search Engines
Researchers' networks have been subject to active modeling and analysis.
Earlier literature mostly focused on citation or co-authorship networks
reconstructed from annotated scientific publication databases, which have
several limitations. Recently, general-purpose web search engines have also
been utilized to collect information about social networks. Here we
reconstructed, using web search engines, a network representing the relatedness
of researchers to their peers as well as to various research topics.
Relatedness between researchers and research topics was characterized by
visibility boost-increase of a researcher's visibility by focusing on a
particular topic. It was observed that researchers who had high visibility
boosts by the same research topic tended to be close to each other in their
network. We calculated correlations between visibility boosts by research
topics and researchers' interdisciplinarity at individual level (diversity of
topics related to the researcher) and at social level (his/her centrality in
the researchers' network). We found that visibility boosts by certain research
topics were positively correlated with researchers' individual-level
interdisciplinarity despite their negative correlations with the general
popularity of researchers. It was also found that visibility boosts by
network-related topics had positive correlations with researchers' social-level
interdisciplinarity. Research topics' correlations with researchers'
individual- and social-level interdisciplinarities were found to be nearly
independent from each other. These findings suggest that the notion of
"interdisciplinarity" of a researcher should be understood as a
multi-dimensional concept that should be evaluated using multiple assessment

Direct entropy determination and application to artificial spin ice
From thermodynamic origins, the concept of entropy has expanded to a range of
statistical measures of uncertainty, which may still be thermodynamically
significant. However, laboratory measurements of entropy continue to rely on
direct measurements of heat. New technologies that can map out myriads of
microscopic degrees of freedom suggest direct determination of configurational
entropy by counting in systems where it is thermodynamically inaccessible, such
as granular and colloidal materials, proteins and lithographically fabricated
nanometre-scale arrays. Here, we demonstrate a conditional-probability
technique to calculate entropy densities of translation-invariant states on
lattices using limited configuration data on small clusters, and apply it to
arrays of interacting nanometre-scale magnetic islands (artificial spin ice).
Models for statistically disordered systems can be assessed by applying the
method to relative entropy densities. For artificial spin ice, this analysis
shows that nearest-neighbour correlations drive longer-range ones.Comment: 10 page
