    Zn-vacancy related defects in ZnO grown by pulsed laser deposition

    Undoped and Ga-doped ZnO (002) films were grown c-sapphire using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. Znvacancy related defects in the films were studied by different positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). These included Doppler broadening spectroscopy (DBS) employing a continuous monenergetic positron beam, and positron lifetime spectroscopy using a pulsed monoenergetic positron beam attached to an electron linear accelerator. Two kinds of Znvacancy related defects namely a monovacancy and a divacancy were identified in the films. In as-grown undoped samples grown with relatively low oxygen pressure P(O2)≤1.3 Pa, monovacancy is the dominant Zn-vacancy related defect. Annealing these samples at 900 oC induced Zn out-diffusion into the substrate and converted the monovacancy to divacancy. For the undoped samples grown with high P(O2)=5 Pa irrespective of the annealing temperature and the as-grown degenerate Ga-doped sample (n=1020 cm-3), divacancy is the dominant Zn-vacancy related defect.     Inhibitory mechanism of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde accumulation in 1,3-propanediol synthesis with Klebsiella pneumoniae

    3-Hydroxypropionaldehyde accumulation may cause the cessation of 1,3-propanediol sustained production with glycerol by Klebsiella pneumoniae. The impeller tip speed shift from higher to lower speed at glycerol excess or the pulsed glycerol feeding could lead to an abrupt increase of the 3- hydroxypropionaldehyde concentration (up to 10 mmol/l) in 10 min. The intracellular consequence of the 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde accumulation has not yet been elucidated. The rapid accumulation of 3- hydroxypropionaldehyde relying on the impeller tip speed shift was employed to investigate the influences of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde to the activities of nine key enzymes related to glycerol metabolism, CO2 and O2 levels in off-gas, cell growth and 1,3-propanediol synthesis. Compared with that at 1.19 mmol/l 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde in broth, the residual enzymatic activities of the nine key enzymes ranged from 9.44 to 74.68% in the cultures at 7.5 mmol/l 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde in broth. The inhibitions of cell growth and the 1,3-propanediol synthesis were unnoticeable at the low level of 3- hydroxypropionaldehyde. By contrast, the CO2 and O2 levels changes in off-gas response to the 3- hydroxypropionaldehyde accumulation were less than 15 min. These results suggest that 3- hydroxypropionaldehyde inhibited the growth and metabolism of K. pneumoniae in a more complicated manner.Keywords: Fermentation, glycerol, 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde, Klebsiella pneumoniae, 1,3-propanediol

    Measurement of the velocities in the transient acceleration process using all-fiber photonic Doppler velocimetry

    Based on analysis of basic photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV), a formula to measure velocity variation in a single cycle is put forward. PDV has been improved in three aspects, namely, the laser, the detector and the data processing. A measurement system for velocity of the initial stage of a shock motion has been demonstrated. Instantaneous velocity measurements have been performed. The experimental results have a good agreement with the values obtained from the accelerometer. Compared with the traditional fringe method, the proposed method in this paper can identify instantaneous velocity variation. So it is particularly suitable for measuring the velocity in the transient acceleration process of shock waves and detonation waves

    Pan-African metamorphic and magmatic rocks of the Khanka Massif, NE China: Further evidence regarding their affinity

    The Khanka Massif is a crustal block located along the eastern margin of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) and bordered to the east by Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous circum-Pacific accretionary complexes of the Eastern Asian continental margin. It consists of graphite-, sillimanite- and cordierite-bearing gneisses, carbonates and felsic paragneisses, in association with various orthogneisses. Metamorphic zircons from a sillimanite gneiss from the Hutou complex yield a weighted mean 206Pb/ 238U age of 490 ± 4 Ma, whereas detrital zircons from the same sample give ages from 934-610 Ma. Magmatic zircon cores in two garnet-bearing granite gneiss samples, also collected from the Hutou complex, yield weighted mean 206Pb/ 238U ages of 522 ± 5 Ma and 515 ± 8 Ma, whereas their metamorphic rims record 206Pb/ 238U ages of 510-500 Ma. These data indicate that the Hutou complex in the Khanka Massif records early Palaeozoic magmatic and metamorphic events, identical in age to those in the Mashan Complex of the Jiamusi Massif to the west. The older zircon populations in the sillimanite gneiss indicate derivation from Neoproterozoic sources, as do similar rocks in the Jiamusi Massif. These data confirm that the Khanka Massif has a close affinity with other major components of the CAOB to the west of the Dun-Mi Fault. Based on these results and previously published data, the Khanka Massif is therefore confirmed as having formed a single crustal entity with the Jiamusi (and possibly the Bureya) massif since Neoproterozoic time.     Evidence for antigenic seniority in influenza A (H3N2) antibody responses in southern China

    A key observation about the human immune response to repeated exposure to influenza A is that the first strain infecting an individual apparently produces the strongest adaptive immune response. Although antibody titers measure that response, the interpretation of titers to multiple strains - from the same sera - in terms of infection history is clouded by age effects, cross reactivity and immune waning. From July to September 2009, we collected serum samples from 151 residents of Guangdong Province, China, 7 to 81 years of age. Neutralization tests were performed against strains representing six antigenic clusters of H3N2 influenza circulating between 1968 and 2008, and three recent locally circulating strains. Patterns of neutralization titers were compared based on age at time of testing and age at time of the first isolation of each virus. Neutralization titers were highest for H3N2 strains that circulated in an individual's first decade of life (peaking at 7 years). Further, across strains and ages at testing, statistical models strongly supported a pattern of titers declining smoothly with age at the time a strain was first isolated. Those born 10 or more years after a strain emerged generally had undetectable neutralization titers to that strain (<1:10). Among those over 60 at time of testing, titers tended to increase with age. The observed pattern in H3N2 neutralization titers can be characterized as one of antigenic seniority: repeated exposure and the immune response combine to produce antibody titers that are higher to more 'senior' strains encountered earlier in life. © 2012 Lessler et al.published_or_final_versio

    Magnetic field effects on the electroluminescence of organic light emitting devices: A tool to indicate the carrier mobility

    The magnetoelectroluminescence (MEL) of organic light emitting devices with a N, N′ -bis(l-naphthyl)- N, N′ -diphenyl- 1, l′ -biphentl- 4, 4′ -diamine:tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (NPB: Alq 3) mixed emission layer (EML) has been investigated. We find that MEL is maximized when the volume ratio of NPB of the mixed EML reaches 30% and the EML thickness is 40 nm. The features of MEL under various magnetic field strengths are insensitive to the change in EML thickness and mixing ratio. Meanwhile, MEL has a close relationship with the carrier mobility. We have conducted a theoretical study to further verify the relationship.     Preparation and analysis of a new bioorganic metallic material

    Biofouling on metal surfaces is one of the main reasons for increased ship drag. Many methods have already been used to reduce or remove it with moderate success. In this study, a synthetic peptide has been utilized to react with 304 stainless steel aiming to generate a bioorganic stainless steel using a facile technique. After the reaction, white matter was found on the surface of the treated stainless steel via SEM, whilst the nontreated stainless steel had none. Elemental analysis confirmed that excessive N existed on the surface of the treated samples using an integrated SEM-EDS instrument, implying the presence of peptides binding on the surface of the bioorganic stainless steel. The FTIR spectra showed amide A and II peaks on the surface of the bioorganic stainless steel suggesting that either the peptides grafted onto the steel surface or the polypeptide composition accumulated on the steel samples. XPS analysis of the treated steel demonstrated that there was nitrogen bonding on the surface and it was a chemical bond via a previously unreported chemical interaction. The treated steel has a markedly increased contact angle (water contact angle of 65.7 ± 4.7° for nontreated steel in comparison to treated, 96.4 ± 2.1°), which supported the observation of the wettability change of the surface, i.e. the decrease of the surface energy value after peptide treatment.     Synthesis, structure, and magnetism in the ferromagnet La_{3}MnAs_{5}: Well-separated spin chains coupled via itinerant electrons

    In this work, we systematically report the synthesis, structure, and magnetism of a compound of filled anti-Mn3Si5 type La3MnAs5. It crystallizes in a hexagonal structure with the space group of P63/mcm (193). The structure consists of face-sharing MnAs6 octahedral chains along the c axis, which are well separated by a large distance of 8.9913 Å, demonstrating a strong one-dimensional (1D) structural character. Physical property measurements indicate that La3MnAs5 is a ferromagnetic metal with TC ∼ 112 K. Due to the short-range intrachain spin coupling, the susceptibility deviates from the Curie-Weiss behavior in a wide temperature window and the magnetic entropy corresponding to the ferromagnetic transition is significantly lower than that expected from the fully saturated state. The magnetic critical behavior studies show that La3MnAs5 can be described by the three-dimensional Heisenberg model. The orbital hybridization between the 1D MnAs6 chain and intermediate La atom near the Fermi level reveals that the itinerant electrons play a key role in transmitting spin interaction among the MnAs6 spin chains. Our results indicate that La3MnAs5 is a rare ferromagnetic metal with well-separated spin chains, which provides a good opportunity to study the mechanism of interchain spin coupling via itinerant electrons
