Nonlinear envelope equation for broadband optical pulses in quadratic media
We derive a nonlinear envelope equation to describe the propagation of
broadband optical pulses in second order nonlinear materials. The equation is
first order in the propagation coordinate and is valid for arbitrarily wide
pulse bandwidth. Our approach goes beyond the usual coupled wave description of
phenomena and provides an accurate modelling of the evolution of
ultra-broadband pulses also when the separation into different coupled
frequency components is not possible or not profitable
On homogeneous CR manifolds and their CR algebras
In this paper we show some results on homogeneous CR manifolds, proved by
introducing their associated CR algebras. In particular, we give different
notions of nondegeneracy (generalizing the usual notion for the Levi form)
which correspond to geometrical properties for the corresponding manifolds. We
also give distinguished equivariant CR fibrations for homogeneous CR manifolds.
In the second part of the paper we apply these results to minimal orbits for
the action of a real form of a semisimple Lie group \^G on a flag manifold

The extension problem for partial Boolean structures in Quantum Mechanics
Alternative partial Boolean structures, implicit in the discussion of
classical representability of sets of quantum mechanical predictions, are
characterized, with definite general conclusions on the equivalence of the
approaches going back to Bell and Kochen-Specker. An algebraic approach is
presented, allowing for a discussion of partial classical extension, amounting
to reduction of the number of contexts, classical representability arising as a
special case. As a result, known techniques are generalized and some of the
associated computational difficulties overcome. The implications on the
discussion of Boole-Bell inequalities are indicated.Comment: A number of misprints have been corrected and some terminology

Evaluation of the burden of HPV-related hospitalizations as a useful tool to increase awareness: 2007–2017 data from the sicilian hospital discharge records
In light of the implementation of human papillomavirus (HPV) prevention strategies, epidemiological studies in different geographical areas are required in order to assess the impact of HPV-related diseases. The purpose of the present study was to describe the burden of HPV-related hospitalizations in Sicily. A retrospective observational study estimated 43,531 hospitalizations attributable to HPV from 2007 to 2017. During the observed period, there was a decrease for all HPV-related conditions with a higher reduction, among neoplasms, for cervical cancer (annual percent change (APC) = −9.9%, p < 0.001). The median age for cervical cancer was 45 years old, with an increasing value from 43 to 47 years (p < 0.001). The age classes with greater decreases in hospital admissions for invasive cancers were women aged 35 years or more (APC range from −5.5 to −9.86) and 25–34 years old (APC = −11.87, p < 0.001) for women with cervical carcinoma in situ. After ten years for vaccine introduction and sixteen years for cervical cancer screening availability, a relatively large decrease in hospital admissions for cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases in Sicily was observed. Some clinical characteristics of hospitalization, such as increasing age, are suggestive clues for the impact of preventive strategies, but further research is needed to confirm this relationship
Human-technology integration with industrial conversational agents: A conceptual architecture and a taxonomy for manufacturing
Conversational agents are systems with great potential to enhance human-computer interaction in industrial settings. Although the number of applications of conversational agents in many fields is growing, there is no shared view of the elements to design and implement for chatbots in the industrial field. The paper presents the combination of many research contributions into an integrated conceptual architecture, for developing industrial conversational agents using Nickerson's methodology. The conceptual architecture consists of five core modules; every module consists of specific elements and approaches. Furthermore, the paper defines a taxonomy from the study of empirical applications of manufacturing conversational agents. Indeed, some applications of chatbots in manufacturing are available but those have never been collected in single research. The paper fills this gap by analyzing the empirical cases and presenting a qualitative analysis, with verification of the proposed taxonomy. The contribution of the article is mainly to illustrate the elements needed for the development of a conversational agent in manufacturing: researchers and practitioners can use the proposed conceptual architecture and taxonomy to more easily investigate, define, and develop all the elements for chatbot implementation
25-Hydroxy vitamin-D, obesity, and associated variables as predictors of breast cancer risk and tamoxifen benefit in NSABP-P1.
Observational studies suggest that host factors are associated with breast cancer risk. The influence of obesity, vitamin-D status, insulin resistance, inflammation, and elevated adipocytokines in women at high risk of breast cancer is unknown. The NSABP-P1 trial population was used for a nested case-control study. Cases were drawn from those who developed invasive breast cancer and controls selected from unaffected participants (≤4 per case) matched for age, race, 5 year Gail score, and geographic location of clinical center as a surrogate for latitude. Fasting serum banked at trial enrolment was assayed for 25-hydroxy vitamin-D (25OHD), insulin, leptin (adipocytokine), and C-reactive protein (CRP, marker of inflammation). Logistic regression was used to test for associations between study variables and the risk of invasive breast cancer. Two hundred and thirty-one cases were matched with 856 controls. Mean age was 54, and 49% were premenopausal. There were negative correlations for 25OHD with body mass index (BMI), insulin, CRP, and leptin. BMI ≥ 25 kg/m(2) was associated with higher breast cancer risk (odds ratio [OR] 1.45, p = 0.02) and tamoxifen treatment was associated with lower risk (OR = 0.44, p < 0.001). Suboptimal 25OHD (<72 nmol/l) did not influence breast cancer risk (OR = 1.06, p = 0.76). When evaluated as continuous variables, 25OHD, insulin, CRP, and leptin levels were not associated with breast cancer risk (all p > 0.34). In this high risk population, higher BMI was associated with a greater breast cancer risk. Serum levels of 25OHD, insulin, CRP, and leptin were not independent predictors of either breast cancer risk or tamoxifen benefit
Implementation of a three-quantum-bit search algorithm
We report the experimental implementation of Grover's quantum search
algorithm on a quantum computer with three quantum bits. The computer consists
of molecules of C-labeled CHFBr, in which the three weakly coupled
spin-1/2 nuclei behave as the bits and are initialized, manipulated, and read
out using magnetic resonance techniques. This quantum computation is made
possible by the introduction of two techniques which significantly reduce the
complexity of the experiment and by the surprising degree of cancellation of
systematic errors which have previously limited the total possible number of
quantum gates.Comment: Published in Applied Physics Letters, vol. 76, no. 5, 31 January
