The Association between Childhood Obesity and Cardiovascular Changes in 10 Years Using Special Data Science Analysis
The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity is a worldwide problem, with several well-known consequences that might start to develop early in life during childhood. The present research based on data from children that have been followed since birth in a previously established cohort study (Generation XXI, Porto, Portugal), taking advantage of State-of-the-Art (SoA) data science techniques and methods, including Neural Architecture Search (NAS), explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), and Deep Learning (DL), aimed to explore the hidden value of data, namely on electrocardiogram (ECG) records performed during follow-up visits. The combination of these techniques allowed us to clarify subtle cardiovascular changes already present at 10 years of age, which are evident from ECG analysis and probably induced by the presence of obesity. The proposed novel combination of new methodologies and techniques is discussed, as well as their applicability in other health domains.João Rala Cordeiro received support from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (PhD Research Scholarship reference 2020.07443.BD)
Photocatalytic asphalt mixtures: semiconductors' impact in skid resistance and texture
Photocatalytic asphalt mixtures have the capability of mitigating air quality problems and degrade oils/greases by using semiconductors. The techniques to do so can change their functional characteristics. This study aimed to analyse the functionalization effect on the essential surface characteristics, such as macrotexture, skid resistance, and microtexture. AC 14 and AC 6 mixtures were functionalised with nano-TiO2 and micro-ZnO by spraying and bulk incorporation. Mean Profile Depth, British Pendulum and microtexture amplitude parameters were evaluated. TiO2 application seemed to smooth the surface slightly. In dry condition, the skid resistance of functionalised asphalt and control mixtures was similar. In wet condition, the functionalization caused a maximum decrease of 7% in skid resistance. The amplitude parameters were not affected by any functionalization technique except the skewness of AC 14 with 6% TiO2 by bulk incorporation. Furthermore, the application of the semiconductors can be used without high impacts in texture and skid resistance. This work was partially financed by FCT (Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia) under the project [PTDC/FIS/120412/2010]: "Nanobased concepts for Innovative & Eco-sustainable constructive material's surfaces" and project [PEst-OE/ECI/UI4047/2014]. Trypanosoma rangeli is phylogenetically closer to Old World trypanosomes than to Trypanosoma cruzi.
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Trypanosoma rangeli and Trypanosoma cruzi are generalist trypanosomes sharing a wide range of mammalian hosts; they are transmitted by triatomine bugs, and are the only trypanosomes infecting humans in the Neotropics. Their origins, phylogenetic relationships, and emergence as human parasites have long been subjects of interest. In the present study, taxon-rich analyses (20 trypanosome species from bats and terrestrial mammals) using ssrRNA, glycosomal glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gGAPDH), heat shock protein-70 (HSP70) and Spliced Leader RNA sequences, and multilocus phylogenetic analyses using 11 single copy genes from 15 selected trypanosomes, provide increased resolution of relationships between species and clades, strongly supporting two main sister lineages: lineage Schizotrypanum, comprising T. cruzi and bat-restricted trypanosomes, and Tra[Tve-Tco] formed by T. rangeli, Trypanosoma vespertilionis and Trypanosoma conorhini clades. Tve comprises European T. vespertilionis and African T. vespertilionis-like of bats and bat cimicids characterised in the present study and Trypanosoma sp. Hoch reported in monkeys and herein detected in bats. Tco included the triatomine-transmitted tropicopolitan T. conorhini from rats and the African NanDoum1 trypanosome of civet (carnivore). Consistent with their very close relationships, Tra[Tve-Tco] species shared highly similar Spliced Leader RNA structures that were highly divergent from those of Schizotrypanum. In a plausible evolutionary scenario, a bat trypanosome transmitted by cimicids gave origin to the deeply rooted Tra[Tve-Tco] and Schizotrypanum lineages, and bat trypanosomes of diverse genetic backgrounds jumped to new hosts. A long and independent evolutionary history of T. rangeli more related to Old World trypanosomes from bats, rats, monkeys and civets than to Schizotrypanum spp., and the adaptation of these distantly related trypanosomes to different niches of shared mammals and vectors, is consistent with the marked differences in transmission routes, life-cycles and host-parasite interactions, resulting in T. cruzi (but not T. rangeli) being pathogenic to humans. This study was supported by grants awarded to MMGT and EPC from CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) PROAFRICA, PROSUL and UNIVERSAL programs, CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) PNIPB, PNPD and PROTAX programs, and FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation; process 2016/07487-0). Closed String Tachyons and Semi-Classical Instabilities
We conjecture that the end point of bulk closed string tachyon decay at any
non-zero coupling, is the annihilation of space time by Witten's bubble of
nothing, resulting in a topological phase of the theory. In support of this we
present a variety of situations in which there is a correspondence between the
existence of perturbative tachyons in one regime and the semi-classical
annihilation of space-time. Our discussion will include many recently
investigated scenarios in string theory including Scherk-Schwarz
compactifications, Melvin magnetic backgrounds, and noncompact orbifolds. We
use this conjecture to investigate a possible web of dualities relating the
eleven-dimensional Fabinger-Horava background with nonsupersymmetric string
theories. Along the way we point out where our conjecture resolves some of the
puzzles associated with bulk closed string tachyon condensation.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures 3 figures added, typos corrected and references

Accelerating Cold Dark Matter Cosmology ()
A new kind of accelerating flat model with no dark energy that is fully
dominated by cold dark matter (CDM) is investigated. The number of CDM
particles is not conserved and the present accelerating stage is a consequence
of the negative pressure describing the irreversible process of gravitational
particle creation. A related work involving accelerating CDM cosmology has been
discussed before the SNe observations [Lima, Abramo & Germano, Phys. Rev. D53,
4287 (1996)]. However, in order to have a transition from a decelerating to an
accelerating regime at low redshifts, the matter creation rate proposed here
includes a constant term of the order of the Hubble parameter. In this case,
does not need to be small in order to solve the age problem and the
transition happens even if the matter creation is negligible during the
radiation and part of the matter dominated phase. Therefore, instead of the
vacuum dominance at redshifts of the order of a few, the present accelerating
stage in this sort of Einstein-de Sitter CDM cosmology is a consequence of the
gravitational particle creation process. As an extra bonus, in the present
scenario does not exist the coincidence problem that plagues models with
dominance of dark energy. The model is able to harmonize a CDM picture with the
present age of the universe, the latest measurements of the Hubble parameter
and the Supernovae observations.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, typos corrected, references added, discussion in

Can the evolution of music be analyzed in a quantitative manner?
We propose a methodology to study music development by applying multivariate
statistics on composers characteristics. Seven representative composers were
considered in terms of eight main musical features. Grades were assigned to
each characteristic and their correlations were analyzed. A bootstrap method
was applied to simulate hundreds of artificial composers influenced by the
seven representatives chosen. Afterwards we quantify non-numeric relations like
dialectics, opposition and innovation. Composers differences on style and
technique were represented as geometrical distances in the feature space,
making it possible to quantify, for example, how much Bach and Stockhausen
differ from other composers or how much Beethoven influenced Brahms. In
addition, we compared the results with a prior investigation on philosophy.
Opposition, strong on philosophy, was not remarkable on music. Supporting an
observation already considered by music theorists, strong influences were
identified between composers by the quantification of dialectics, implying
inheritance and suggesting a stronger master-disciple evolution when compared
to the philosophy analysis.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, added references for sections 1 and 4.C, better

Gravito-electromagnetic analogies
We reexamine and further develop different gravito-electromagnetic (GEM)
analogies found in the literature, and clarify the connection between them.
Special emphasis is placed in two exact physical analogies: the analogy based
on inertial fields from the so-called "1+3 formalism", and the analogy based on
tidal tensors. Both are reformulated, extended and generalized. We write in
both formalisms the Maxwell and the full exact Einstein field equations with
sources, plus the algebraic Bianchi identities, which are cast as the
source-free equations for the gravitational field. New results within each
approach are unveiled. The well known analogy between linearized gravity and
electromagnetism in Lorentz frames is obtained as a limiting case of the exact
ones. The formal analogies between the Maxwell and Weyl tensors are also
discussed, and, together with insight from the other approaches, used to
physically interpret gravitational radiation. The precise conditions under
which a similarity between gravity and electromagnetism occurs are discussed,
and we conclude by summarizing the main outcome of each approach.Comment: 60 pages, 2 figures. Improved version (compared to v2) with some

Geometry of open strings ending on backreacting D3-branes
We investigate open string theory on backreacting D3-branes using a spacetime
approach. We study in detail the half-BPS supergravity solutions describing
open strings ending on D3-branes, in the near horizon of the D3-branes. We
recover quantitatively several non-trivial features of open string physics
including the appearance of D3-brane spikes, the polarization of fundamental
strings into D5-branes, and the Hanany-Witten effect. Finally we detail the
computation of the gravitational potential between two open strings, and
contrast it with the holographic computation of Wilson lines. We argue that the
D-brane backreaction has a large influence on the low-energy gravity, which may
lead to experimental tests for string theory brane-world scenarios.Comment: 64 pages, 20 figure
