Combination Forecasts of Bond and Stock Returns: An Asset Allocation Perspective

    Get PDF
We investigate the out-of-sample forecasting ability of the HML, SMB, momentum, short-term and long-term reversal factors along with their size and value decompositions on U.S. bond and stock returns for a variety of horizons ranging from the short run (1 month) to the long run (2 years). Our findings suggest that these factors contain significantly more information for future bond and stock market returns than the typically employed financial variables. Combination of forecasts of the empirical factors turns out to be particularly successful, especially from an an asset allocation perspective. Similar findings pertain to the European and Japanese markets

The Interplay of TLR-NFκB Signalling Pathway and Functional Immune-Related Enzymes in the Inflammatory Response of Ciona robusta

Ascidians (Tunicata) are a powerful model for studying the innate immune system. To better understand the dynamics of immune responses under bacterial challenge in Ciona robusta, we exposed ascidians to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection. Immunohistochemistry analysis on two components of the nuclear factor kappa B (Nf kappa B) key signalling pathway, the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and NF kappa B, showed their over-expression on tissue of LPS-injected ascidians. Also, several enzymes related to immune responses were up-modulated following the LPS challenge. Our study suggests a broad and complex innate immune activation in the regulation of tunicate inflammatory responses. The close phylogenetic relationship between ascidians (Tunicata) and vertebrates makes them a powerful model for studying the innate immune system. To better understand the nature and dynamics of immune responses and the mechanisms through which bacterial infections are detected and translated into inflammation in Ciona robusta, we applied an approach combining in vivo lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, immune-labelling techniques and functional enzymatic analyses. The immunohistochemistry showed that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF kappa B) were expressed during the inflammatory pharynx response 4 h post-LPS, with the formation of nodules in pharynx vessel lumen. Also, the endothelium vessels were involved in the inflammatory response. Observations of histological sections from naive and buffer-inoculated ascidians confirmed an immuno-positive response. Enzyme immune parameters-which included the activity of phenoloxidase, glutathione peroxidase, lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase and esterase-showed up-modulation 4 h after LPS injection, confirming their participation during ascidian inflammatory response. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the LPS-induced C. robusta response and suggest that a broad innate immune mechanism, as in vertebrates, is involved in the regulation of inflammatory responses. Further findings in this direction are needed to cover knowledge gaps regarding the organized set of molecular and cellular networks involved in universal immune interactions with pathogens

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and investigate the genomic background of scrotal circumference and semen parameters in the Italian Simmental bulls. Scrotal circumference, number of normal spermatozoa, ejaculate volume, spermatozoa motility, and total spermatozoa were measured on 622 bulls, of which 603 had genotypes for 42,141 SNP. Variance components of scrotal circumference were estimated with an animal model that included the fixed effects of birth year, animal age, and measurement method, and the random effects of day of measurement and animal. In the model for the other traits, the scrotal circumference was added as a covariate to account for its influence on the semen parameters. A genome-wide association study was carried out using the ssGBLUP-approach. Heritabilities ranged from 0.07 +/- 0.05 (spermatozoa motility) to 0.50 +/- 0.14 (scrotal circumference). A total of 13 SNP passed the Bonferroni correction threshold and the number of significantly associated markers ranged from 1 (ejaculate volume and spermatozoa motility) to 5 (total spermatozoa). Genes already associated with reproduction parameters were retrieved close to the significant SNP. Results of the present study gave preliminary insights about the genetic determinism of semen quality in Italian Simmental bulls

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged length of labor is associated with increased maternal and neonatal complications. Therefore, great attention has been given to interventions aimed at reducing the length of labor. One such intervention is the peanut ball, a large elongated exercise ball placed between a woman's legs during labor. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was to assess the effect of the use of peanut ball in reducing length of labor. STUDY DESIGN: Data sources: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Sciences, Scopus, ClinicalTrial.gov, OVID and Cochrane Library were searched from inception until January 2019. SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection criteria included RCTs of laboring women with singleton gestations in cephalic presentation at term (≥37weeks) who were randomized to either use of peanut ball or control group (no peanut ball). DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Four trials with 648 nulliparous and multiparous women in spontaneous or induced labor were identified and included. 330 women were randomized to the intervention (peanut ball between the knees during labor) and 318 women to the control. Summary measures were reported as mean difference (MD) with 95% of confidence interval (CI) using the random effects model of DerSimonian and Laird. The primary outcome was total length of labor. PROSPERO Registration Number: CRD42018082438 RESULTS: Total length of labor was 79min shorter in the peanut ball group, but this was not significant (MD -79.1 min, 95% CI -204.9, 46.7). Peanut ball use showed trends toward higher incidence of spontaneous vaginal deliveries (RR 1.1, 95% CI 1.0, 1.2) and lower incidence of cesarean deliveries (RR 0.8, 95% CI 0.6, 1.0). CONCLUSIONS: Peanut ball use was not associated with a significant decrease in total length of labor. Since there were trends toward reductions in length of labor, an increased incidence in spontaneous vaginal deliveries, and lower incidence of cesarean deliveries, more research is needed

    Acoustic Emission from crumpling paper

From magnetic systems to the crust of the earth, many physical systems that exibit a multiplicty of metastable states emit pulses with a broad power law distribution in energy. Digital audio recordings reveal that paper being crumpled, a system that can be easily held in hand, is such a system. Crumpling paper both using the traditional hand method and a novel cylindrical geometry uncovered a power law distribution of pulse energies spanning at least two decades: (exponent 1.3 - 1.6) Crumpling initally flat sheets into a compact ball (strong crumpling), we found little or no evidence that the energy distribution varied systematically over time or the size of the sheet. When we applied repetitive small deformations (weak crumpling) to sheets which had been previously folded along a regular grid, we found no systematic dependence on the grid spacing. Our results suggest that the pulse energy depends only weakly on the size of the paper regions responsible for sound production.Comment: 12 pages of text, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from American Physical Society via the DOI in this record.Brillouin and Raman scattering spectroscopy are established techniques for the nondestructive contactless and label-free readout of mechanical, chemical and structural properties of condensed matter. Brillouin-Raman investigations currently require separate measurements and a site-matched approach to obtain complementary information from a sample. Here we demonstrate a new concept of fully scanning multimodal micro-spectroscopy for simultaneous detection of Brillouin and Raman light scattering in an exceptionally wide spectral range, from fractions of GHz to hundreds of THz. It yields an unprecedented 150 dB contrast, which is especially important for the analysis of opaque or turbid media such as biomedical samples, and spatial resolution on a sub-cellular scale. We report the first applications of this new multimodal method to a range of systems, from a single cell to the fast reaction kinetics of a curing process, and the mechano-chemical mapping of highly scattering biological samples.S.
