Influence of Clinical Status and Parasite Load on Erythropoiesis and Leucopoiesis in Dogs Naturally Infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi

Background: The bone marrow is considered to be an important storage of parasites in Leishmania-infected dogs, although little is known about cellular genesis in this organ during canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). Methodology/Principal Findings: The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in erythropoiesis and leucopoiesis in bone marrow aspirates from dogs naturally infected with Leishmania chagasi and presenting different clinical statuses and bone marrow parasite densities. The evolution of CVL from asymptomatic to symptomatic status was accompanied by increasing parasite density in the bone marrow. The impact of bone marrow parasite density on cellularity was similar in dogs at different clinical stages, with animals in the high parasite density group. Erythroid and eosinophilic hypoplasia, proliferation of neutrophilic precursor cells and significant increases in lymphocytes and plasma cell numbers were the major alterations observed. Differential bone marrow cell counts revealed increases in the myeloid:erythroid ratio associated to increased numbers of granulopoietic cells in the different clinical groups compared with non-infected dogs. Conclusions: Analysis of the data obtained indicated that the assessment of bone marrow constitutes an additional and useful tool by which to elaborate a prognosis for CVL

Conhecendo seus próprios talentos: jovens de escolas públicas em instituições de pesquisa no Rio de Janeiro Knowing one's own talents: public school youngsters in the research institutions of Rio de Janeiro

Intervenções educativas com a juventude merecem ser sempre analisadas e é isto a que nos propomos neste artigo. Trazemos uma reflexão que inicia por uma demarcação fundamental sobre como entendemos o jovem. Seguimos pela apresentação de um projeto específico - Jovens Talentos -, iniciação à ciência dirigida à parcela de estudantes da escola pública no estado do Rio de Janeiro, para que realizem atividades científicas, sob orientação de um pesquisador, freqüentando um determinado laboratório. Procuramos analisar como os que passam por essa experiência indicam compreendê-la. Essa iniciativa foi percebida como fundamental em questões relativas à independência e à autonomia do estudante, mostrando a relevância de ações educativas dirigidas a jovens.<br>Educational interventions related to youth always deserve being analyzed. This paper thus brings forward a reflection that begins with a fundamental delimitation of how we understand youngsters. It then presents a specific project - Jovens Talentos (Young Talents) - that initiates the students of public schools in the State of Rio de Janeiro to science. They perform scientific activities under the direction of a researcher and use a laboratory. We tried to analyze how the students that underwent this experience understand it. This initiative is held as fundamental in some issues related to the independence and autonomy of the student, which shows the importance of educational actions directed to youngsters

Leishmanicidal Galloylquinic Acids are Noncompetitive Inhibitors of Arginase

Leishmanicidal galloylquinic acids were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of Byrsonima coccolobifolia. These phenols and gallic acid showed to be a new class of potent noncompetitive inhibitors of arginase ARG (Ki ranging from 0.10 to 0.68 µmol L-1) from Leishmania amazonensis. Quinic acid did not exhibit significant inhibition of ARG, indicating that galloyl moiety has important features that allows the enzyme-inhibitor interactions. The significant inhibitory activity of gallic acid on ARG can be a clue to understand the immune response previously observed on L. donovani, since ARG activity is associated with the decrease of the levels of NO in Leishmania infection
