    Annotated Bibliography: Work & Faith

    Seattle Pacific University’s Work and Faith Collection has grown to be one of the most comprehensive and unique collections of materials addressing the integration of work and Christian faith in the world. Beginning with an initial donation from InterVarsity’s Pete Hammond in the winter of 2008, there are now almost 2,000 materials for the student, scholar, and business practitioner to discover. The following annotated bibliography offers librarians insight into this collection and, by extension,into the diverse literature fueling the interdisciplinary study of religion, business, technology, and labor. The list below was compiled with the goal of illustrating this diversity and thus includes classic works in the field of work and faith in addition to more recent – and even more critical – treatments of the theology of work in its historical, theological, and political manifestations. It is the hope of the author that librarians and researchers alike will find in it a starting point from which they can begin to build their own collection on this increasingly significant but admittedly complex topic.     Requirement analysis for building practical accident warning systems based on vehicular ad-hoc networks

    An Accident Warning System (AWS) is a safety application that provides collision avoidance notifications for next generation vehicles whilst Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) provide the communication functionality to exchange these notifi- cations. Despite much previous research, there is little agreement on the requirements for accident warning systems. In order to build a practical warning system, it is important to ascertain the system requirements, information to be exchanged, and protocols needed for communication between vehicles. This paper presents a practical model of an accident warning system by stipulating the requirements in a realistic manner and thoroughly reviewing previous proposals with a view to identify gaps in this area

    Whether one is speaking of its progressive elements or its charismatic characteristics, Korean Christianity exhibits a vibrancy that stands out among the religious traditions of modern East Asia. Its evangelistic zeal and enormous growth have led to its being a locus point of Christian faith for those in non-Western contexts. In light of its vibrancy and prominence, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the church in Korea is proof that Christianity may thrive outside of the West. At the same time, the reasons for Christianity’s success on the Korean peninsula are more difficult to pin down. Why has it been so profoundly successful? What has influenced it? How has the Christian faith come to be so meaningful to the Korean people? Studies abound which relate the “answers” to these questions, and many of them have much to contribute to the study of Christianity in Korea. There is no doubt that answers will be multi-faceted and varied, just as Korean Christianity itself is. If one examines, however, both the theological and practical emphases of Korean Christianity in conjunction with the religious history of the Korean peninsula, it will become obvious that the former can be attributed in large part to the latter’s influence. In light of this, the following study will examine how non-Christian religious traditions have influenced the unique emphases of Korean Christianity. This will entail an examination of the pneumatological impact of Shamanism, the soteriological and eschatological influence of Buddhism, and Neo-Confucianism’s effect on Christian morality and ideology

    Contemporary and Historical Evidence to Suggest that Women’s Preference for Age at Birth of First Child Remains Consistent Across Time

    Women’s ability to reproduce is restricted by menarche and menopause. First children are, however, not typically born until some years after the onset of puberty. Other factors therefore contribute towards this delay. In this context, women’s hips do not reach full adult form until they are in their mid-20s. Therefore, physiological and morphological factors appear to determine an optimum age-range for reproduction. The following studies were conducted in order to investigate this hypothesis. Study 1 asked nulliparous women questions about ages at which particular life events related to reproduction should ideally occur. This revealed their preferred age at birth of first child to be approximately 27 years old. Study 2 replicated these findings and further showed that women with children actually had their first child at a very similar age (27.93 [±0.79]). Findings from Study 3 were also remarkably consistent (28.15 [±0.39]). Study 4 examined the 1901 UK Census record and incorporated an analysis of the influence of wealth. Middle class women were on average 24.88 (±0.22) years old at the birth of their first child. Poor women were on average 23.50 (±0.20) years old. These figures at least approximate to findings from Studies 1–3, which is noteworthy given that modern contraceptive methods were not widely available at the time. It is concluded that female strategies to delay giving birth to their first child until they are of an age that approaches or coincides with their full hip maturation are enduring across time

He is the Ringing Master of the Cathedral of St Michael and St George, Grahamstown, South Africa.The refurbishment and rehanging in a new frame in 1989 of the eight bells of St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia, was an indirect compliment to the quality of Irish workmanship. The bells, with a tenor of 13½ cwt, were cast in Dublin by Murphy's Bell Foundry to the order of Bishop Goold. They arrived in Melbourne in 1853. The bells were intended for St Francis' Church in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, which had no tower! Eventually, in 1868, they were hung in the south tower of the cathedral. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries there were at least four founders in Dublin who cast ringing bells: John Murphy, James Sheridan, Thomas Hodges and Matthew O'Byrne
