Weak Transitions in A=6 and 7 Nuclei
The He beta decay and Be electron capture processes are studied using
variational Monte Carlo wave functions, derived from a realistic Hamiltonian
consisting of the Argonne two-nucleon and Urbana-IX three-nucleon
interactions. The model for the nuclear weak axial current includes one- and
two-body operators with the strength of the leading two-body term--associated
with -isobar excitation of the nucleon--adjusted to reproduce the
Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium -decay. The measured half-life of
. He is under-predicted by theory by 8%, while that of Be for
decay into the ground and first excited states of Li is over-predicted by
9%. However, the experimentally known branching ratio for these latter
processes is in good agreement with the calculated value. Two-body axial
current contributions lead to a 1.7% (4.4%) increase in the value of
the Gamow-Teller matrix element of He (Be), obtained with one-body
currents only, and slightly worsen (appreciably improve) the agreement between
the calculated and measured half-life. Corrections due to retardation effects
associated with the finite lepton momentum transfers involved in the decays, as
well as contributions of suppressed transitions induced by the weak vector
charge and axial current operators, have also been calculated and found to be

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Pion Scattering from Li
We show that the neutron and proton transition densities predicted by recent
quantum Monte Carlo calculations for A=6,7 nuclei are consistent with pion
scattering from 6Li and 7Li at energies near the Delta resonance. This has
provided a microscopic understanding of the enhancement factors for quadrople
excitations, which were needed to describe pion inelastic scattering within the

Off-Diagonal Long Range Order and Scaling in a Disordered Quantum Hall System
We have numerically studied the bosonic off-diagonal long range order,
introduced by Read to describe the ordering in ideal quantum Hall states, for
noninteracting electrons in random potentials confined to the lowest Landau
level. We find that it also describes the ordering in disordered quantum Hall
states: the proposed order parameter vanishes in the disordered
() phase and increases continuously from zero in the ordered
() phase. We study the scaling of the order parameter and

Effects of oxytocin on attention to emotional faces in healthy volunteers and highly socially anxious males
Background: Evidence suggests that individuals with social anxiety demonstrate vigilance to social threat, whilst the peptide hormone oxytocin is widely accepted as supporting affiliative behaviour in humans. Methods: This study investigated whether oxytocin can affect attentional bias in social anxiety. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, within-group study design, 26 healthy and 16 highly socially anxious (HSA) male volunteers (within the HSA group, 10 were diagnosed with generalized social anxiety disorder) were administered 24 IU of oxytocin or placebo to investigate attentional processing in social anxiety. Attentional bias was assessed using the dot-probe paradigm with angry, fearful, happy and neutral face stimuli. Results: In the baseline placebo condition, the HSA group showed greater attentional bias for emotional faces than healthy individuals. Oxytocin reduced the difference between HSA and non-socially anxious individuals in attentional bias for emotional faces. Moreover, it appeared to normalize attentional bias in HSA individuals to levels seen in the healthy population in the baseline condition. The biological mechanisms by which oxytocin may be exerting these effects are discussed. Conclusions: These results, coupled with previous research, could indicate a potential therapeutic use of this hormone in treatment for social anxiety
Use of variability in national and regional data to estimate the prevalence of lymphangioleiomyomatosis
Background: Understanding the true prevalence of lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is important in estimating disease burden and targeting specific interventions. As with all rare diseases, obtaining reliable epidemiological data is difficult and requires innovative approaches. Aim: To determine the prevalence and incidence of LAM using data from patient organizations in seven countries, and to use the extent to which the prevalence of LAM varies regionally and nationally to determine whether prevalence estimates are related to health-care provision. Methods: Numbers of women with LAM were obtained from patient groups and national databases from seven countries (n = 1001). Prevalence was calculated for regions within countries using female population figures from census data. Incidence estimates were calculated for the USA, UK and Switzerland. Regional variation in prevalence and changes in incidence over time were analysed using Poisson regression and linear regression. Results: Prevalence of LAM in the seven countries ranged from 3.4 to 7.8/million women with significant variation, both between countries and between states in the USA. This variation did not relate to the number of pulmonary specialists in the region nor the percentage of population with health insurance, but suggests a large number of patients remain undiagnosed. The incidence of LAM from 2004 to 2008 ranged from 0.23 to 0.31/million women/per year in the USA, UK and Switzerland. Conclusions: Using this method, we have found that the prevalence of LAM is higher than that previously recorded and that many patients with LAM are undiagnose
Gauge-invariant fluctuations of scalar branes
A generalization of the Bardeen formalism to the case of warped geometries is
presented. The system determining the gauge-invariant fluctuations of the
metric induced by the scalar fluctuations of the brane is reduced to a set of
Schr\"odinger-like equations for the Bardeen potentials and for the canonical
normal modes of the scalar-tensor action. Scalar, vector and tensor modes of
the geometry are classified according to four-dimensional Lorentz
transformations. While the tensor modes of the geometry live on the brane
determining the corrections to Newton law, the scalar and and vector
fluctuations exhibit non normalizable zero modes and are, consequently, not
localized on the brane. The spectrum of the massive modes of the fluctuations
is analyzed using supersymmetric quantum mechanics.Comment: 29 pages in Latex styl
Neutrino-Deuteron Scattering in Effective Field Theory at Next-to-Next-to Leading Order
We study the four channels associated with neutrino-deuteron breakup
reactions at next-to-next to leading order in effective field theory. We find
that the total cross-section is indeed converging for neutrino energies up to
20 MeV, and thus our calculations can provide constraints on theoretical
uncertainties for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. We stress the importance of
a direct experimental measurement to high precision in at least one channel, in

Horizonless Rotating Solutions in -dimensional Einstein-Maxwell Gravity
We introduce two classes of rotating solutions of Einstein-Maxwell gravity in
dimensions which are asymptotically anti-de Sitter type. They have no
curvature singularity and no horizons. The first class of solutions, which has
a conic singularity yields a spacetime with a longitudinal magnetic field and
rotation parameters. We show that when one or more of the rotation
parameters are non zero, the spinning brane has a net electric charge that is
proportional to the magnitude of the rotation parameters. The second class of
solutions yields a spacetime with an angular magnetic field and
boost parameters. We find that the net electric charge of these traveling
branes with one or more nonzero boost parameters is proportional to the
magnitude of the velocity of the brane. We also use the counterterm method
inspired by AdS/CFT correspondence and calculate the conserved quantities of
the solutions. We show that the logarithmic divergencies associated to the Weyl
anomalies and matter field are zero, and the divergence of the action can
