Deverbal semantics and the Montagovian generative lexicon

We propose a lexical account of action nominals, in particular of deverbal nominalisations, whose meaning is related to the event expressed by their base verb. The literature about nominalisations often assumes that the semantics of the base verb completely defines the structure of action nominals. We argue that the information in the base verb is not sufficient to completely determine the semantics of action nominals. We exhibit some data from different languages, especially from Romance language, which show that nominalisations focus on some aspects of the verb semantics. The selected aspects, however, seem to be idiosyncratic and do not automatically result from the internal structure of the verb nor from its interaction with the morphological suffix. We therefore propose a partially lexicalist approach view of deverbal nouns. It is made precise and computable by using the Montagovian Generative Lexicon, a type theoretical framework introduced by Bassac, Mery and Retor\'e in this journal in 2010. This extension of Montague semantics with a richer type system easily incorporates lexical phenomena like the semantics of action nominals in particular deverbals, including their polysemy and (in)felicitous copredications.Comment: A revised version will appear in the Journal of Logic, Language and Informatio

Utilizing micro-computed tomography to evaluate bone structure surrounding dental implants: a comparison with histomorphometry

Although histology has proven to be a reliable method to evaluate the ossoeintegration of a dental implant, it is costly, time consuming, destructive, and limited to one or few sections. Microcomputed tomography (µCT) is fast and delivers three-dimensional information, but this technique has not been widely used and validated for histomorphometric parameters yet. This study compared µCT and histomorphometry by means of evaluating their accuracy in determining the bone response to two different implant materials. In total, 32 titanium (Ti) and 16 hydroxyapatite (HA) implants were installed in 16 lop-eared rabbits. After 2 and 4 weeks, the animals were scarified, and the samples retrieved. After embedding, the samples were scanned with µCT and analyzed three-dimensionally for bone area (BA) and bone-implant contact (BIC). Thereafter, all samples were sectioned and stained for histomorphometry. For the Ti implants, the mean BIC was 25.25 and 28.86% after 2 and 4 weeks, respectively, when measured by histomorphometry, while it was 24.11 and 24.53% when measured with µCT. BA was 35.4 and 31.97% after 2 and 4 weeks for histomorphometry and 29.06 and 27.65% for µCT. For the HA implants, the mean BIC was 28.49 and 42.51% after 2 and 4 weeks, respectively, when measured by histomorphometry, while it was 33.74 and 42.19% when measured with µCT. BA was 30.59 and 47.17% after 2 and 4 weeks for histomorphometry and 37.16 and 44.95% for µCT. Direct comparison showed that only the 2 weeks BA for the titanium implants was significantly different between µCT and histology (p = 0.008). Although the technique has its limitations, µCT corresponded well with histomorphometry and should be considered as a tool to evaluate bone structure around implants

A Generative Montagovian Lexicon for Polysemous Deverbal Nouns

Accepted for publication in the proceedings of 4th congress on Universal Logic --- Logic and linguistics workshop. Rio de Janeiro April 4-7 2013.International audienceWe propose a computational formalization of some forms of polysemy. Here we focus on the resultative/processual polysemy of deverbal nouns like assinatura ("signing/signature") or abertura ("opening/aperture") in Por- tuguese -- we also study similar constructs in French, Italian, and English. We follow the Montagovian Generative Lexicon (MGL) introduced in Bassac, Mery & Retor ́e (2010) based on second-order Girard's F system with several entity types -- including at least one type t for propositions and several entity types, as v (event), s (state) φ (physical object). Our for- malization produces the readings involving one aspect of the polysemous noun, and it also handles properly co-predication phenomena

Whole-Body Bilateral Teleoperation of a Redundant Aerial Manipulator

    Get PDF
Attaching a robotic manipulator to a flying base allows for significant improvements in the reachability and versatility of manipulation tasks. In order to explore such systems while taking advantage of human capabilities in terms of perception and cognition, bilateral teleoperation arises as a reasonable solution. However, since most telemanipulation tasks require visual feedback in addition to the haptic one, real-time (task-dependent) positioning of a video camera, which is usually attached to the flying base, becomes an additional objective to be fulfilled. Since the flying base is part of the kinematic structure of the robot, if proper care is not taken, moving the video camera could undesirably disturb the end-effector motion. For that reason, the necessity of controlling the base position in the null space of the manipulation task arises. In order to provide the operator with meaningful information about the limits of the allowed motions in the null space, this paper presents a novel haptic concept called Null-Space Wall. In addition, a framework to allow stable bilateral teleoperation of both tasks is presented. Numerical simulation data confirm that the proposed framework is able to keep the system passive while allowing the operator to perform time-delayed telemanipulation and command the base to a task-dependent optimal pose.Comment: to be published in 2020 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA

This Dissertation is part of the Constitutionalism and Law Production Research Line and aims to analyze the application of Flexicurity in Labor Reforms based on the Constitution of the Federative Republi c of Brazil of 1988 and the Labor Systems of the European Union. The Dissertation is justified by the growth in Neoliberal Political thought in Brazil and in Europe, and by the search for the reduction of the Unemployment Rate through reforms in Labor Laws . In this sense, considering the advancement of Neoliberal Policies with a focus on making Worker's Law less rigid, objective reservations should be made that guarantee an "existential minimum", that is, observe minimum benefits to which every Human Being must have access in a guaranteeing you a dignified life and a balanced work environment. To that end, Chapter 1 covers a brief history of Labor Law and a discussion of Globalization and Neoliberalism, its foundations and consequences. Chapter 2 deals with the Sources of Labor Law, its Principles and their placement within Fundamental Rights, as well as the provision of these Sources and Rights within the Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil of 1988 and the Social Labor Rights in the Charter of Fundamental Principles of the European Union. Chapter 3 is dedicated to presenting the Labor Reforms that took place in the last 30 years and are under discussion in this Dissertation, with a specific focus on the Labor Reforms of Brazil, Spain, Portugal a nd Denmark, but without forgetting to point out other reforms that occurred in European Countries. In the end, it was observed that in the case of Brazil, the reforms did not achieve the desired objective, having only made jobs precarious, however, in the European context the result was different. Although they relaxed the Labor Standards and facilitated the dismissal of employees, they did not directly confront the Sources of Labor Law, but only changed the way to achieve the desired results. There are sti ll impediments to Unjustly Caused or Arbitrary Dismissals and Workers' Rights are still well established, with the State compensating for the weaknesses created with positive benefits, assistance and professional training. This allowed us to observe that F lexicurity and Reforms undeniably reduced Workers' Rights, but will not necessarily leave them unattended or vulnerable and will not necessarily face the Sources of Labor Law. The method used will be inductive through bibliographic research

Multi-DoF Time Domain Passivity Approach Based Drift Compensation for Telemanipulation

    Get PDF
When, in addition to stability, position synchronization is also desired in bilateral teleoperation, Time Domain Passivity Approach (TDPA) alone might not be able to fulfill the desired objective. This is due to an undesired effect caused by admittance type passivity controllers, namely position drift. Previous works focused on developing TDPA-based drift compensation methods to solve this issue. It was shown that, in addition to reducing drift, one of the proposed methods was able to keep the force signals within their normal range, guaranteeing the safety of the task. However, no multi-DoF treatment of those approaches has been addressed. In that scope, this paper focuses on providing an extension of previous TDPA-based approaches to multi-DoF Cartesian-space teleoperation. An analysis of the convergence properties of the presented method is also provided. In addition, its applicability to multi-DoF devices is shown through hardware experiments and numerical simulation with round-trip time delays up to 700 ms.Comment: 2019 19th International Conference on Advanced Robotics (ICAR
