L'Etat Post-Colonial: la Crise et la Reconstruction

Left, right and centre bemoan the failure of the African state. This article challenges their analysis which is not based upon an adequate analysts of the changes in social forces and processes that are involved. It substantiates this assertion by criticising the three most prominent explanations — neo-patrimonial, monopoly and comprador theories — for failing to take the African ruling class seriously, underestimating the foreign stake in state formation and ignoring the growing organisational competence and influence of subordinate classes, It then looks more closely at the way in which these social forces are restructuring the African state system. It concludes by considering the opportunities which the new situation creates for democratic politics.A gauche, à droite et au Centre beoman, l'échec de l'état africain. Cet article remet en question leur analyse qui n'est pas établie sur des données adéquates des changements des forces sociales et processus qu'elles impliquent. Il justifie cette affirmation par la critique des trois explications les plus proéminentes — néo?patrimonial, monopolie et les théories comprador — pour avoir manquer de prendre au sérieux la classe africaine au pouvoir, pour avoir sousestimé l'état étrange dans la formation de l'état, et ignoré la compétence organisationelle et l'influence des classes subordonnées. Il considère ensuite plus en details la manière dont ces forces sociales ont restructuré le système de l'état africain, de telle sorte qu'il ne se désintègre pas totalement.
