    Promoting social emotional learning in Chinese schools: a feasibility study of PATHS implementation in Hong Kong

    Poster 1Social emotion learning (SEL) can be taught in schools. The present report describes a pilot trial of the PATHS Curriculum, a US developed evidence-based SEL program, among schools in Hong Kong SAR (China). Three elementary schools, 318 students in 12 first grade classrooms, participated in the study. The first grade PATHS lessons were adapted and translated into Chinese. Twelve teachers learned and adopted these lessons in their teaching. Students in these classrooms learned about different emotions and practiced self control. The intervention lasted for four months. After the intervention, students showed increase in their emotion understanding, improvement in their emotional regulation and prosocial behaviors. No change was observed in the levels of children’s problem behaviors. Over 65% of the participating teachers reported high degree of satisfaction and willingness to adopt the intervention in their classrooms. Further analyses indicated that the effects of the intervention varied among schools. There were also variations in the dosage of intervention and principal support, but not the quality of implementation among the 3 schools.     Lesion detection and Grading of Diabetic Retinopathy via Two-stages Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

    We propose an automatic diabetic retinopathy (DR) analysis algorithm based on two-stages deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN). Compared to existing DCNN-based DR detection methods, the proposed algorithm have the following advantages: (1) Our method can point out the location and type of lesions in the fundus images, as well as giving the severity grades of DR. Moreover, since retina lesions and DR severity appear with different scales in fundus images, the integration of both local and global networks learn more complete and specific features for DR analysis. (2) By introducing imbalanced weighting map, more attentions will be given to lesion patches for DR grading, which significantly improve the performance of the proposed algorithm. In this study, we label 12,206 lesion patches and re-annotate the DR grades of 23,595 fundus images from Kaggle competition dataset. Under the guidance of clinical ophthalmologists, the experimental results show that our local lesion detection net achieve comparable performance with trained human observers, and the proposed imbalanced weighted scheme also be proved to significantly improve the capability of our DCNN-based DR grading algorithm

    Maternal depressive symptoms and child social preference during the early school years: Mediation by maternal warmth and child emotion regulation

    This longitudinal study examined processes that mediate the association between maternal depressive symptoms and peer social preference during the early school years. Three hundred and fifty six kindergarten children (182 boys) and their mothers participated in the study. During kindergarten, mothers reported their level of depressive symptomatology. In first grade, teachers rated children's emotion regulation at school and observers rated the affective quality of mother-child interactions. During second grade, children's social preference was assessed by peer nomination. Results indicated that mothers' level of depressive symptomatology negatively predicted their child's social preference 2 years later, controlling for the family SES and teacher-rated social preference during kindergarten. Among European American families, the association between maternal depressive symptoms and social preference was partially mediated by maternal warmth and the child's emotion regulation. Although the relation between maternal depressive symptoms and children peer preference was stronger among African American families than Europrean American families, its mediation by the maternal warmth and child's emotion regulation was not found in African American families. © 2010 The Author(s).published_or_final_versionSpringer Open Choice, 21 Feb 201

    Rifapentine and isoniazid in the continuation phase of a 6-month regimen. Final report at 5 years: prognostic value of various measures

    SETTING: Clinical trial in 672 patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis in Hong Kong. After an initial 2 months of a four-drug intensive phase consisting of thrice-weekly streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide (SHRZ), a random allocation was made to a continuation phase of once-weekly 600 mg rifapentine + 15 mg/kg isoniazid (HRp1), HRp1 given in 2 of every 3 weeks (HRp1.2/3), or to thrice-weekly isoniazid + rifampicin (HR3), the standard treatment in Hong Kong. / OBJECTIVE: Final report evaluating adverse events (46 relapses and one failure) after 5 years and the prognostic influence of various factors. / METHODS: Kaplan-Meier analysis of adverse events and Cox proportional hazards analysis of prognostic factors. / RESULTS: The two rifapentine regimens, HRp1 and HRp1.2/3 had similar final rates of adverse events of 10.8% and 11.7%, respectively, compared to 4.2% for the HR3 regimen (P = 0.02 and 0.009, respectively). In the initial univariate proportional hazards analysis, adverse events were significantly related to the regimen, age, sex, pretreatment radiographic extent of disease and cavitation, and also to sputum culture at 2 months. In the final multivariate analysis, after step-wise removal of non-significant factors, adverse events were related only to the regimen, patients' sex and pretreatment radiographic extent of disease. Elderly male patients were more at risk of an adverse event, as were those with more severe disease. Adverse events occurred at life table rates of 9.0% in patients with drug-sensitive strains and in 8.9% of those with initially isoniazid-resistant organisms at 5 years. / CONCLUSIONS: The two rifapentine regimens were unsatisfactory because of their high incidence of adverse events. Isoniazid appeared not to contribute to preventing relapse. Further studies with increased rifapentine dosage are necessary

    Ezrin interacts with the SARS coronavirus spike protein and restrains infection at the entry stage

There are still many unknowns on the implication of cellular factors that regulate the entry process. Methodology/Principal Findings: We performed a yeast two-hybrid screen using as bait the carboxy-terminal endodomain of S, which faces the cytosol during and after opening of the fusion pore at early stages of the virus life cycle. Here we show that the ezrin membrane-actin linker interacts with S endodomain through the F1 lobe of its FERM domain and that both the eight carboxy-terminal amino-acids and a membrane-proximal cysteine cluster of S endodomain are important for this interaction in vitro. Interestingly, we found that ezrin is present at the site of entry of S-pseudotyped lentiviral particles in Vero E6 cells. Targeting ezrin function by small interfering RNA increased S-mediated entry of pseudotyped particles in epithelial cells. Furthermore, deletion of the eight carboxy-terminal amino acids of S enhanced S-pseudotyped particles infection. Expression of the ezrin dominant negative FERM domain enhanced cell susceptibility to infection by SARS-CoV and S pseudotyped particles and potentiated S-dependent membrane fusion. Conclusions/Significance: Ezrin interacts with SARS-CoV S endodomain and limits virus entry and fusion.     Using an Ishikawa diagram as a tool to assist memory and retrieval of relevant medical cases from the medical literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Studying medical cases is an effective way to enhance clinical reasoning skills and reinforce clinical knowledge. An Ishikawa diagram, also known as a cause-and-effect diagram or fishbone diagram, is often used in quality management in manufacturing industries.</p> <p>In this report, an Ishikawa diagram is used to demonstrate how to relate potential causes of a major presenting problem in a clinical setting. This tool can be used by teams in problem-based learning or in self-directed learning settings.</p> <p>An Ishikawa diagram annotated with references to relevant medical cases and literature can be continually updated and can assist memory and retrieval of relevant medical cases and literature. It could also be used to cultivate a lifelong learning habit in medical professionals.</p

    Informational needs of general practitioners regarding discharge medication: content, timing and pharmacotherapeutic advice

    textabstractObjective: To investigate the needs of Dutch general practitioners on discharge medication, both regarding content, timing and the appreciation of pharma-cotherapeutic advices from clinical pharmacists. Setting: A general teaching hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Method: A prospective observational study was performed. A questionnaire with regard to the content, optimal timing (including way of information transfer) and appreciation of pharmacotherapeutic advices was posted to 464 general practitioners. One reminder was sent. Main outcome measure: Description of the needs of general practitioners was assessed. For each question and categories of comments frequency tables were made. The Fisher-exact test was used to study associations between the answers to the questions. Results: In total, 149 general practitioners (32%) responded. Most general practitioners (75%) experienced a delay in receiving discharge medication information and preferred to receive this on the day of discharge. GPs wished to receive this information mainly through e-mail (44%). There was a significant correlation (P = 0.002) between general practitioners who wanted to know whether and why medication had been stopped (87%) and changed (88%) during hospital admission. The general practitioners (88%) appreciated pharmacotherapeutic advices from clinical pharmacists. Conclusion: This study indicates how information transfer on discharge medication to GPs can be optimised in the Netherlands. The information arrives late and GPs want to be informed on the day of discharge mainly by e-mail. GPs wish to know why medication is changed or discontinued and appreciate pharmacotherapeutic advices from clinical pharmacists
