    Effect of Cement Base Thicknesses on MOD Amalgam Restorations

    The effect of five cement bases on the fracture strength of three amalgams was determined at 24 h after condensation.     Pyrrolo- and pyridomorphinans:Non-selective opioid antagonists and delta opioid agonists/mu opioid partial agonists

    Opioid ligands have found use in a number of therapeutic areas, including for the treatment of pain and opiate addiction (using agonists) and alcohol addiction (using antagonists such as naltrexone and nalmefene). The reaction of imines, derived from the opioid ligands oxymorphone and naltrexone, with Michael acceptors leads to pyridomorphinans with structures similar to known pyrrolo- and indolomorphinans. One of the synthesized compounds, 5e, derived from oxymorphone had substantial agonist activity at delta opioid receptors but not at mu and/or kappa opioid receptors and in that sense profiled as a selective delta opioid receptor agonist. The pyridomorphinans derived from naltrexone and naloxone were all found to be non-selective potent antagonists and as such could have utility as treatments for alcohol abuse

    3P2^3P_2-3F2^3F_2 Pairing in Dense Neutron Matter: The Spectrum of Solutions

    The 3P2^3P_2-3F2^3F_2 pairing model is generally considered to provide an adequate description of the superfluid states of neutron matter at densities some 2-3 times that of saturated symmetrical nuclear matter. The problem of solving the system of BCS gap equations expressing the 3P2^3P_2-3F2^3F_2 model is attacked with the aid of the separation approach. This method, developed originally for quantitative study of S-wave pairing in the presence of strong short-range repulsions, serves effectively to reduce the coupled, singular, nonlinear BCS integral equations to a set of coupled algebraic equations. For the first time, sufficient precision becomes accessible to resolve small energy splittings between the different pairing states. Adopting a perturbative strategy, we are able to identify and characterize the full repertoire of real solutions of the 3P2^3P_2-3F2^3F_2 pairing model, in the limiting regime of small tensor-coupling strength. The P-F channel coupling is seen to lift the striking parametric degeneracies revealed by a earlier separation treatment of the pure, uncoupled 3P2^3P_2 pairing problem. Remarkably, incisive and robust results are obtained solely on the basis of analytic arguments. Unlike the traditional Ginzburg-Landau approach, the analysis is not restricted to the immediate vicinity of the critical temperature, but is equally reliable at zero temperature.     Equation of state and magnetic susceptibility of spin polarized isospin asymmetric nuclear matter

    Properties of spin polarized isospin asymmetric nuclear matter are studied within the framework of the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock formalism. The single-particle potentials of neutrons and protons with spin up and down are determined for several values of the neutron and proton spin polarizations and the asymmetry parameter. It is found an almost linear and symmetric variation of the single-particle potentials as increasing these parameters. An analytic parametrization of the total energy per particle as a function of the asymmetry and spin polarizations is constructed. This parametrization is employed to compute the magnetic susceptibility of nuclear matter for several values of the asymmetry from neutron to symmetric matter. The results show no indication of a ferromagnetic transition at any density for any asymmetry of nuclear matter.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables (submitted to Phys. Rev. C

    Assessment of fetal heart rate variability and velocity variability by Doppler velocimetry of the descending aorta at 10-20 weeks of gestation

    Objectives: Determination of gestational age-related modulations in fetal heart rate and descending aorta blood flow velocity in the early human fetus and comparison of aortic variability data with data obtained from the umbilical artery. It is hypothesized that these modulations present in the umbilical artery also occur in the descending aorta. Methods: Doppler studies of descending aorta velocity waveforms were performed at 10-20 weeks in 55 normal pregnant women. In 24 of the 55 women, Doppler recordings from both the descending aorta and the umbilical artery were collected. Absolute values and variability of fetal heart rate, peak systolic and time-averaged velocities were determined from flow velocity waveforms of at least 18 s in duration. Results: From 10 to 20 weeks of gestation, the descending aorta peak systolic and time-averaged velocities increased, whereas the fetal heart rate decreased. The descending aorta peak systolic variability also increased. However, the time-averaged velocity variability and the fetal heart rate variability remained constant during the study period. In the subset of 24 women, the fetal heart rate variability and velocity variability data from the descending aorta and umbilical artery were not significantly different. Conclusions: Reproducible fetal heart rate and velocity variability data can be derived from the descending aorta and umblilical artery. The increase in heart rate variability observed in the umbilical artery was not seen in recordings obtained from the descending aorta. Different fetal activity states may be the underlying mechanism for these heart rate variability discrepancies

    Entropy paradox in strongly correlated Fermi systems

    A system of interacting, identical fermions described by standard Landau Fermi-liquid (FL) theory can experience a rearrangement of its Fermi surface if the correlations grow sufficiently strong, as occurs at a quantum critical point where the effective mass diverges. As yet, this phenomenon defies full understanding, but salient aspects of the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior observed beyond the quantum critical point are still accessible within the general framework of the Landau quasiparticle picture. Self-consistent solutions of the coupled Landau equations for the quasiparticle momentum distribution n(p)n(p) and quasiparticle energy spectrum ϵ(p)\epsilon(p) are shown to exist in two distinct classes, depending on coupling strength and on whether the quasiparticle interaction is regular or singular at zero momentum transfer. One class of solutions maintains the idempotency condition n2(p)=n(p)n^2(p)=n(p) of standard FL theory at zero temperature TT while adding pockets to the Fermi surface. The other solutions are characterized by a swelling of the Fermi surface and a flattening of the spectrum ϵ(p)\epsilon(p) over a range of momenta in which the quasiparticle occupancies lie between 0 and 1 even at T=0. The latter, non-idempotent solution is revealed by analysis of a Poincar\'e mapping associated with the fundamental Landau equation connecting n(p)n(p) and ϵ(p)\epsilon(p) and validated by solution of a variational condition that yields the symmetry-preserving ground state. Paradoxically, this extraordinary solution carries the burden of a large temperature-dependent excess entropy down to very low temperatures, threatening violation of the Nernst Theorem. It is argued that certain low-temperature phase transitions offer effective mechanisms for shedding the entropy excess. Available measurements in heavy-fermion compounds provide concrete support for such a scenario.Comment: 34 pages, 6 figure
