Wrack Writing (Selections)

How does one write—about bodies, sensations, the more-than-human world—in the midst of, and in response to, the mounting devastation that settler colonial capitalism continues to wreak on lands, waters and relationships? Theodor Adorno’s (1983 [1967], p. 34) diversely interpreted statement that ‘to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric’ resonates strongly at the current moment: what does it mean to write, and especially to write beautifully, in conditions that are permeated with colonial violence and capitalist devastation? How do we, as feminist writers, imagine our words as witnessing, or even as politicising, these violences? How can feminist lyrical writing sharpen our longing for justice rather than serve as an alibi for continued dispossession and commodification (including the commodification of our writing in the neoliberal university)? Are there practices of writing self-consciously ‘in the wrack zone’ that might help us develop new forms, processes and conversations to inspire and narrate reflection and resistance

Welt und Begehren als Nicht-Objekte sozialer Konstruktion

"Wenn man der Frage nach dem Verhältnis einer Wissenschaft des Sozialen zu einer Analytik des Existierens (als einer philosophischen Freilegung der Strukturen des Sich- und Fremdgegebenseins) nachgeht, bekommt die Tatsache der Existenz im Sozialen oder in der sozialen Kommunikation von zwei eigentümlichen Objekten eine entscheidende Relevanz. Es sind Objekte, die nicht wie alle anderen sozial konstruiert werden. Die Sozialität berührt sie ständig, sie kommen in ihr vor, und zwar in maßgebenden Zusammenhängen ihrer Synthesen, sie werden selbstverständlich in ihr auch konstruiert wie alles, worüber man spricht; jedoch markieren sie Brüche innerhalb der Kommunikation, über die eine sozial nicht festhaltbare, aushandelbare, wechselhafter Verständigung fähige Substanz in das Soziale einbricht. Sie stellen Grenzen der universalen Sozietalisierung aller denkbaren Sinnentwürfe dar. Diese Objekte sind das Da-sein (die Welt) und das Sexuiert-sein (das Begehren und seine Affektsubstanz). Beide Objekte stellen Probleme dar, die sich nicht auf die Seite einer wie auch immer gearteten herüber ziehen lassen. Sie bleiben in ihrem Kern aller vergemeinschafteten Behandlung entzogen. Ihre Sonderung und die Theamtisierung der Form ihrer Problematizität sind Anlass, Begrifflichkeit und Problematik der sozialen Konstruktion aller Sinnentwürfe neu zu bedenken. Der Augenmerk muss dabei zentral auf folgendes gerichtet sein: auf die Objekte selbst, ihre substanzhafte (Vor)Gegebenheit (d.i. die Quellen ihrer Präsentation), ihre Art, in die soziale Sinnpoiese einzudringen, die geschichtlichen Wandlungen ihrer Präsentation (bis hin zu einer Selbstevidenz ihrer Jemeinigkeit), ihre Verankerung in einer vestigialen Struktur der Körperlichkeit, den Horizont einer möglichen Hinfälligkeit mancher Momente an ihnen, die Möglichkeit der Neubildung eines Horizonts jenseits ihrer." Differentiation and displacement: Unpicking the relationship between accounts of illness and social structure

This article seeks to unpack the relationship between social structure and accounts of illness. Taking dentine hypersensitivity as an example, this article explores the perspective that accounts of illness are sense-making processes that draw on a readily available pool of meaning. This pool of meaning is composed of a series of distinctions that make available a range of different lines of communication and action about such conditions. Such lines of communication are condensed and preserved over time and are often formed around a concept and its counter concept. The study of such processes is referred to as semantic analysis and involves drawing on the tools and techniques of conceptual history. This article goes on to explore how the semantics of dentine hypersensitivity developed. It illustrates how processes of social differentiation led to the concept being separated from the more dominant concept of dentine sensitivity and how it was medicalised, scientised and economised. In short, this study seeks to present the story of how society has developed a specific language for communicating about sensitivity and hypersensitivity in teeth. In doing so, it proposes that accounts of dentine hypersensitivity draw on lines of communication that society has preserved over time
