The aim of this study was to verify the agreement between different approaches for estimating levels of physical activity in adolescents. One questionnaire was administered to parents and two were administered to the adolescents. This was a cross-sectional analysis of data collected in the 2004-2005 follow-up of the 1993 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort study. Parents or guardians answered the following question: "Compared to most children the same age, would you say that your child exercises more, less, or the same amount?" A similar question was addressed to adolescents, as was a detailed questionnaire on physical activity. Agreement between the questionnaires was measured by the weighted kappa statistic. A total of 4,254 adolescents and parents/guardians answered the questionnaires. Kappa values indicated low agreement for all comparisons (kappa < 0.33 for all analyses). Measurement of physical activity in adolescents is complex, and available instruments should be validated prior to their use.<br>O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a concordância entre diferentes formas de se estimar o nível de atividade física de adolescentes.

The Parent Participation Engagement Measure (PPEM): Reliability and Validity in Child and Adolescent Community Mental Health Services

Parent participation in community-based child mental health services is an important yet understudied process associated with treatment effectiveness. This paper describes the development and psychometrics of the Parent Participation Engagement Measure (PPEM) in a sample of 1374 parents and 563 youth receiving publicly-funded mental health services. Analyses indicated excellent internal consistency, and model fit indices/factor loadings supported a one-factor model. Convergent and discriminant validity were supported, although some coefficients were modest in magnitude. Psychometric results were consistent for Caucasian versus Hispanic, parent versus youth, and English versus Spanish-language respondents. The clinical and research utility of this measure are discussed

Inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (Cdk2) by platinum(II) phenanthroline complexes

Inhibition of protein kinases in the fight against disease remains a constant challenge for medicinal chemists, who have screened multitudes of predominantly planar organic scaffolds, natural and synthetic, to identify potent—albeit not always selective—kinase inhibitors. Herein, in an effort to investigate the potential biological utility of metal-based compounds as inhibitors against the cancer-relevant targets mitogen-activated protein kinase and cyclin-dependent kinase 2, we explore various parameters in planar platinum(II) complexes with substituted phenanthroline ligands and aliphatic diamine chelate co-ligands, to identify combinations that yield promising inhibitory activity. The individual ligands’ steric requirements as well as their pattern of hydrogen bond donors/acceptors appear to alter inhibitory potency when modulated

Parent-child interaction therapy for children with developmental delay and related problems

Young children with or at risk for developmental delay have been shown to be at significantly higher risk for behavior problems and other associated problems, including academic problems, peer problems, and parental stress. In recent years, intervention efforts targeting behavior problems have grown exponentially. Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is an early behavioral parenting training intervention that has received increased research and clinical attention as studies have expanded to include children with developmental delay and related problems. In this chapter, we provide an overview of research studies over the past decade examining PCIT for children with developmental delay and related problems, such as intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, and conditions that increase risk for disability, such as premature birth and traumatic brain injury. Lastly, we provide a case example using PCIT for a 5-year-old African American female with elevated behavior problems following a moderate traumatic brain injury, and conclude with a summary of future directions for PCIT for children with or at risk for developmental delay
