    Implications of new data in charmless B decays

    Based on the latest experimental data of B→ππB \to \pi\pi and πK\pi K modes, a model-independent analytical analysis is presented. The CP-averaged branching ratio difference ΔR=Rc−Rn\Delta R = R_c - R_n in B→πKB\to \pi K decays with Rc=2Br(π0K−)/Br(π−Kˉ0)R_c = 2Br(\pi^0K^-)/Br(\pi^-\bar{K}^0) and Rn=Br(π+K−)/2Br(π0Kˉ0)R_n =Br(\pi^+K^-)/2Br(\pi^0\bar{K}^0) is reduced though it remains larger than the prediction from the standard model(SM) as both measured RnR_n and RcR_c are enhanced, which indicates that a room for new physics becomes smaller. The present data of ππ\pi\pi decay reduce the ratio ∣C/T∣|C/T| from the previous value of ∣C/T∣≃0.8|C/T|\simeq 0.8 to ∣C/T∣≃0.65|C/T| \simeq 0.65, which is still larger than the theoretical estimations based on QCD factorization and pQCD. Within SM and flavor SU(3) symmetry, the current πK\pi K data also diminish the ratio ∣C′/T′∣|C'/T'| from the previous value ∣C′/T′∣≃2|C'/T'| \simeq 2 to ∣C′/T′∣≃1.16|C'/T'| \simeq 1.16 with a large strong phase δC′≃−2.65\delta_{C'} \simeq -2.65, while its value remains much larger than the one extracted from the ππ\pi \pi modes. The direct CP violation ACP(π0Kˉ0)A_{CP}(\pi^0\bar{K}^0) is predicted to be ACP(π0Kˉ0)=−0.15±0.03A_{CP}(\pi^0\bar{K}^0) = -0.15\pm0.03, which is consistent with the present data. Two kinds of new effects in both strong and weak phases of the electroweak penguin diagram are considered. It is found that both cases can reduce the ratio to ∣C′/T′∣=0.40∼0.80|C'/T'| = 0.40\sim 0.80 and lead to roughly the same predictions for CP violation in π0K0\pi^0 K^0.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    A Multiscale Data-Driven Stochastic Method for Elliptic PDEs with Random Coefficients

    In this paper, we propose a multiscale data-driven stochastic method (MsDSM) to study stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) in the multiquery setting. This method combines the advantages of the recently developed multiscale model reduction method [M. L. Ci, T. Y. Hou, and Z. Shi, ESAIM Math. Model. Numer. Anal., 48 (2014), pp. 449--474] and the data-driven stochastic method (DSM) [M. L. Cheng et al., SIAM/ASA J. Uncertain. Quantif., 1 (2013), pp. 452--493]. Our method consists of offline and online stages. In the offline stage, we decompose the harmonic coordinate into a smooth part and a highly oscillatory part so that the smooth part is invertible and the highly oscillatory part is small. Based on the Karhunen--Loève (KL) expansion of the smooth parts and oscillatory parts of the harmonic coordinates, we can derive an effective stochastic equation that can be well-resolved on a coarse grid. We then apply the DSM to the effective stochastic equation to construct a data-driven stochastic basis under which the stochastic solutions enjoy a compact representation for a broad range of forcing functions. In the online stage, we expand the SPDE solution using the data-driven stochastic basis and solve a small number of coupled deterministic partial differential equations (PDEs) to obtain the expansion coefficients. The MsDSM reduces both the stochastic and the physical dimensions of the solution. We have performed complexity analysis which shows that the MsDSM offers considerable savings over not only traditional methods but also DSM in solving multiscale SPDEs. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method for several multiscale stochastic problems without scale separation

    Exclusive B→PVB \to PV Decays and CP Violation in the General two-Higgs-doublet Model

    We calculate all the branching ratios and direct CP violations of B→PVB \to PV decays in a most general two-Higgs-doublet model with spontaneous CP violation. As the model has rich CP-violating sources, it is shown that the new physics effects to direct CP violations and branching ratios in some channels can be significant when adopting the generalized factorization approach to evaluate the hadronic matrix elements, which provides good signals for probing new physics beyond the SM in the future B experiments.Comment: 21 page

    Exploring explicit coarse-grained structure in artificial neural networks

    We propose to employ the hierarchical coarse-grained structure in the artificial neural networks explicitly to improve the interpretability without degrading performance. The idea has been applied in two situations. One is a neural network called TaylorNet, which aims to approximate the general mapping from input data to output result in terms of Taylor series directly, without resorting to any magic nonlinear activations. The other is a new setup for data distillation, which can perform multi-level abstraction of the input dataset and generate new data that possesses the relevant features of the original dataset and can be used as references for classification. In both cases, the coarse-grained structure plays an important role in simplifying the network and improving both the interpretability and efficiency. The validity has been demonstrated on MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets. Further improvement and some open questions related are also discussed

    Exploiting Delay Budget Flexibility for Efficient Group Delivery in the Internet of Things

    Further accelerated by the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, various devices are being continuously introduced into diverse application scenarios. To achieve unattended updates of IoT smart object(s), there remains a challenging problem concerning how to efficiently deliver messages to specific groups of target nodes, especially considering node mobility. In this paper, the relay selection problem is investigated on the basis of directional movement with randomness (e.g. typically associated with the searching or migrating behaviour of animals). Unlike numerous works tackling one-to-one communication, we focus on efficient group delivery (one-to-many). A two-level delay budget model is considered to reflect the flexibility of delay tolerance, which brings potential efficiency gains for group delivery compared with using a single budget boundary. Following the description of the system model, a combinatorial bi-objective optimisation problem is formulated and solutions are proposed. Simulation results show that the greedy algorithm can achieve comparable performance to an evolutionary algorithm when the delivery satisfaction outweighs efficiency. Furthermore, we show that our proposed greedy scheme can outperform the state-of-theart when the delivery efficiency becomes increasingly important

    Exclusive B→VVB \to VV Decays and CP Violation in the General two-Higgs-doublet Model

    Using the general factorization approach, we present a detailed investigation for the branching ratios, CP asymmetries and longitudinal polarization fractions in all charmless hadronic B→VVB \to VV decays (except for the pure annihilation processes) within the most general two-Higgs-doublet model with spontaneous CP violation. It is seen that such a new physics model only has very small contributions to the branching ratios and longitudinal polarization fractions. However, as the model has rich CP-violating sources, it can lead to significant effects on the CP asymmetries, especially on those of penguin-dominated decay modes, which provides good signals for probing new physics beyond the SM in the future B-physics experiments.Comment: 17 pages, no figure

    Africa's HIV/AIDS situation remains cause for concern. The impact of HIV is considerable and threatens the survival and development of African societies. Although much has been attempted, the results still leave much to be desired. AIDS is an epidemic that needs to be addressed with much creativity and spirit of initiative. It is against this background that the 3rd African conference on the social aspects of HIV/AIDS brought innovations in the way international conferences are designed, activities implemented and results obtained. The innovations concerned the approach to international conferences and take into account reconceptualising HIV/AIDS so as to encourage holistic approaches and better visibility of vulnerable groups.The activities of the conference were organised in such a way as to get people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), grassroots communities and marginalised groups to play a focal role.The conference offered an opportunity for developing cultural activities that would translate the African cultural concepts that had been identified as important in the HIV situation and response analysis. Interaction at the conference created an opportunity to analyse the various dimensions of the political, cultural and economic determinants. The conference offered food for thought around response construction while singling out the themes of urgency and acceleration of response, synergy construction, and coordination and conception of political responses.     Update in laparoscopic approach to acute mesenteric ischemia

    AMI is an uncommon but serious disease often associated with a bad prognosis, associated with occlusion of Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) for embolism or thrombosis (67.2%), mesenteric venous thrombosis (15.7%), and non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia (15.4%). Clinical markers are often aspecific and symptoms low suggestive. The gold standard for the diagnosis is multidetector CT Angiography (CTA) with sensibility of 93.3% and specificity of 95.9%. Abdominal exploration could be useful to confirm cases of AMI without signs of SMA occlusion at CTA. Few reports have been found on the diagnostic role of Exploratory Laparoscopy. To increase the sensibility of laparoscopy in the diagnosis of AMI in the last ten years, some studies had shown the possibility of using fluorescein to underline the bowel areas of interest by ischemia. The best of laparoscopy in AMI diagnosis remains the second look and bedside use (directly in ICU when possible) overall in patients with Aortic dissection type B (preferable chronic type). In a limited number of cases, it is possible to evaluate bowel perfusion laparoscopically and at the same time perform a laparoscopical bowel resection of residual ischemic segments. However, laparoscopic primary access overall in AoD is an important tool for leading therapeutic decision and timing. Finally, laparoscopy may be a feasible alternative to CTA in patients with kidney failure that contraindicates injection of iodate CT contrast medium
