    Intense terahertz laser fields on a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

    The spin-dependent density of states and the density of spin polarization of an InAs-based two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling under an intense terahertz laser field are investigated by utilizing the Floquet states to solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. It is found that both densities are strongly affected by the terahertz laser field. Especially a terahertz magnetic moment perpendicular to the external terahertz laser field in the electron gas is induced. This effect can be used to convert terahertz electric signals into terahertz magnetic ones efficiently.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, a typo in Fig. 3(b) is correcte

    Field study on adaptive thermal comfort in typical air conditioned classrooms

    This study investigates adaptive thermal comfort in air conditioned classrooms in Hong Kong. A field survey was conducted in several typical classrooms at the City University of Hong Kong. This survey covered objective measurement of thermal environment parameters and subjective human thermal responses. A total of 982 student volunteers participated in the investigation. The results indicate that students in light clothing (0.42 clo) have adapted to the cooler classroom environments. The neutral temperature is very close to the preferred temperature of approximately 24 °C. Based on the MTSV ranging between −0.5 and + 0.5, the comfort range is between 21.56 °C and 26.75 °C. The lower limit is below that of the ASHRAE standard. Of the predicted mean vote (PMV) and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) model, the UCB model predictions agree better with the mean thermal sensation vote (MTSV). Also, the respective fit regression models of the MTSV versus each of the following: operative temperature (Top), PMV, and UCB were obtained.     Novel spectrum sensing algorithms for OFDM cognitive radio networks

    © 2015 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Spectrum sensing technology plays an increasingly important role in cognitive radio networks. Consequently, several spectrum sensing algorithms have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we present a new spectrum sensing algorithm “Differential Characteristics-Based OFDM (DC-OFDM)” for detecting OFDM signal on account of differential characteristics. We put the primary value on channel gain _ around zero to detect the presence of primary user. Furthermore, utilizing the same method of differential operation, we improve two traditional OFDM sensing algorithms (cyclic prefix and pilot tones detecting algorithms), and propose a “Differential Characteristics-Based Cyclic Prefix (DC-CP)” detector and a “Differential Characteristics-Based Pilot Tones (DC-PT)” detector, respectively. DC-CP detector is based on auto-correlation vector to sense the spectrum, while the DC-PT detector takes the frequency-domain cross-correlation of PT as the test statistic to detect the primary user. Moreover, the distributions of the test statistics of the three proposed methods have been derived. Simulation results illustrate that all of the three proposed methods can achieve good performance under low signal to noise ratio (SNR) with the presence of timing delay. Specifically, the DC-OFDM detector gets the best performance among the presented detectors. Moreover, both of the DC-CP and DC-PT detector achieve significant improvements compared with their corresponding original detectors

    The Luminosity - E_p Relation within Gamma--Ray Bursts and Implications for Fireball Models

    Using a sample of 2408 time-resolved spectra for 91 BATSE gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) presented by Preece et al., we show that the relation between the isotropic-equivalent luminosity (L_iso) and the spectral peak energy (E_p) in the cosmological rest frame, L_iso \propto E_p^2, not only holds within these bursts, but also holds among these GRBs, assuming that the burst rate as a function of redshift is proportional to the star formation rate. The possible implications of this relation for the emission models of GRBs are discussed. We suggest that both the kinetic-energy-dominated internal shock model and the magnetic-dissipation-dominated external shock model can well interpret this relation. We constrain the parameters for these two models, and find that they are in a good agreement with the parameters from the fittings to the afterglow data (abridged).Comment: 3 pages plus 5 figures, emulateapj style, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Data provenance with retention of reference relations

    With the development of data transactions, data security issues have become increasingly important. For example, the copyright authentication and provenance of data have become the primary requirements for data security defence mechanisms. For this purpose, this paper proposes a data provenance system with retention of reference relations (called RRDP), which can enhance the security of data service in the process of publishing and transmission. The system model for data provenance with retention of reference relations adds virtual primary keys using reference relations between data tables. Traditional provenance algorithms have limitations on data types. This model has no such limitations. Added primary key is auto-incrementing integer number. Multi-level encryption is performed on the data watermarking to ensure the secure distribution of data. The experimental results show that the data provenance system with retention of reference relations has good accuracy and robustness of the provenance about common database attacks

    Power grid-oriented cascading failure vulnerability identifying method based on wireless sensors

    In our paper, we study the vulnerability in cascading failures of the real-world network (power grid) under intentional attacks. Here, we use three indexes (B, K, k-shell) to measure the importance of nodes; that is, we define three attacks, respectively. Under these attacks, we measure the process of cascade effect in network by the number of avalanche nodes, the time steps, and the speed of the cascade propagation. Also, we define the node’s bearing capacity as a tolerant parameter to study the robustness of the network under three attacks. Taking the power grid as an example, we have obtained a good regularity of the collapse of the network when the node’s affordability is low. In terms of time and speed, under the betweenness-based attacks, the network collapses faster, but for the number of avalanche nodes, under the degree-based attack, the number of the failed nodes is highest. When the nodes’ bearing capacity becomes large, the regularity of the network’s performances is not obvious. The findings can be applied to identify the vulnerable nodes in real networks such as wireless sensor networks and improve their robustness against different attacks

    Torsional-flexural buckling of unevenly battened columns under eccentrical compressive loading

    In this paper, an analytical model is developed to determine the torsional-flexural buckling load of a channel column braced by unevenly distributed batten plates. Solutions of the critical-buckling loads were derived for three boundary cases using the energy method in which the rotating angle between the adjacent battens was presented in the form of a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolation (PCHI) for unequally spaced battens. The validity of the PCHI method was numerically verified by the classic analytical approach for evenly battened columns and a finite-element analysis for unevenly battened ones, respectively. Parameter studies were then performed to examine the effects of loading eccentricities on the torsional-flexural buckling capacity of both evenly and unevenly battened columns. Design parameters taken into account were the ratios of pure torsional buckling load to pure flexural–buckling load, the number and position of battens, and the ratio of the relative extent of the eccentricity.
