    Effect of hybridization on the magnetic properties of correlated two-band metals

    The magnetic properties of transition-like metals are discussed within the single site approximation, which is a picture to take into account electron correlations. The metal is described by two hybridized bands one of which includes Coulomb correlation. The presented results indicate that ferromagnetism arises for adequate values of hybridization (V), correlation (U) and occupation number(nσn_{\sigma}).     Heterosis and its components in crosses among high quality protein maize populations.

    The objetive of the present study was to investigate heterosis in high quality protein maize populations of distinct grain type groups. Agronomic traits and reaction to some leaf diseases of 19 yellow grain populations were assessed in a partial diallel grown in four environments. For grain yield trait, only variety effects and average heterosis were significant, indicating that the best intervarietal hybrids can be predicted using the means of the parental populations. The BR 473 and CMS 52 flint populations, the CMS 474 and ZQP 103 dent populations are recommended for an inter-group reciprocal recurrent selection program. In a decreasing order of preference, the dent type CMS 474, ZQP 103 and ZQP 101 populations and the flint type BR 473, CMS 455C, CMS 453, CMS 52, CMS 455 and CMS 458 are recommended to form composites

    Developing a Model for Slow Hypoxic Injury and Vascular Degeneration in Amyloid Burdened Brains

    The breakdown of neurovascular systems may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. However whether this breakdown initiates a degenerative mechanism or is the consequence of some other deleterious process remains unknown. We examined hippocampal pathology in double transgenic mice overexpressing a human mutant gene encoding the amyloid precursor protein (APPSwe/Ind) using a combination of histochemistry and stereologic techniques. Expression of APPSwe/Ind in these mice is driven by a tetracycline-sensitive promoter. Tetracycline transcriptional activator (tTA), the second transgene, is driven in turn by a CAM KIIa promoter that is only active in neurons. Thus this double transgenic construct allows us to control expression of APPSwe/Ind with doxycycline. Utilizing this characteristic, we created three distinct experimental groups: A, display abeta plaque pathology and express APPSwe/Ind at time of sacrifice; B, display abeta plaque pathology but do not express APPSwe/Ind at time of sacrifice; and C, do not display abeta plaque pathology but do express APPSwe/Ind at time of sacrifice. Stereologic investigation revealed decreased hippocampal volume in groups A(n=5) and B(n=5) when compared to group C(n=5) and age-matched wildtype (n=9)

    Heterosis in crosses among white grain maize populations with high quality protein.

    The objective of this work was to investigate heterosis and its components in 16 white grain maize populations presenting high quality protein. These populations were divided according to grain type in order to establish different heterosis groups. The crosses were carried out according to a partial diallel cross design among flint and dent populations. Seven agronomic traits were evaluated in three environments while four leaf diseases and incidence of corn stunt were evaluated in one. Least square procedure was applied to the normal equation X'Xb = X'Y, to estimate the model effects and their respective sum of squares. Among the heterosis components, in diallel analysis, significance for average heterosis in grain yield, number of days to female flowering and to all evaluated diseases was detected. Specific heterosis was significant for days to female flowering and resistance to Puccinia polysora. Results concerned to grain yield trait indicate that populations with superior performance in dent group, no matter what flint population group is used in crosses, tend to generate superior intervarietal hybrids. In decreasing order of preference, the dent type populations CMS 476, ZQP/B 103 and ZQP/B 101 and the flint type CMS 461, CMS 460, ZQP/B 104 and ZQP/B 102 are recommended to form composites

    Effects of pre-harvest gibberellic acid spraying on gene transcript accumulation during peach fruit development.

    In order to understand early molecular events associated with increase in fruit size and woolliness prevention induced by pre-harvest gibberellic acid (GA3) spraying, differential transcript accumulation of genes encoding proteins putatively involved in protein folding and protection, cell wall metabolism, and endomembrane transport was studied during fruit development of ?Chiripa´? peach. Woolliness occurrence reached 100% in untreated peach, was reduced by 15% with GA3 spraying at the end of the pit hardening stage and was significantly reduced (by 78%) in peaches treated at the beginning of the pit hardening stage despite a significantly increased fruit size. Low incidence of woolliness after cold storage and fruit size increase in early GA3 treated peach was correlated with high transcript accumulation of genes encoding proteins putatively involved in protein folding, and protection of the endoplasmic reticulum (heat shock proteins?HSP40 er) and chloroplast (HSP17.8 ch), endomembrane transport (GTPase), as well as genes involved in cell wall loosening (expansins?Exp1, Exp2, Exp3, Exp4)

    Transcriptional regulatory networks controlling woolliness in peach in response to preharvest gibberellin application and cold storage

    BACKGROUND: Postharvest fruit conservation relies on low temperatures and manipulations of hormone metabolism to maintain sensory properties. Peaches are susceptible to chilling injuries, such as ‘woolliness’ that is caused by juice loss leading to a ‘wooly’ fruit texture. Application of gibberellic acid at the initial stages of pit hardening impairs woolliness incidence, however the mechanisms controlling the response remain unknown. We have employed genome wide transcriptional profiling to investigate the effects of gibberellic acid application and cold storage on harvested peaches. RESULTS: Approximately half of the investigated genes exhibited significant differential expression in response to the treatments. Cellular and developmental process gene ontologies were overrepresented among the differentially regulated genes, whereas sequences in cell death and immune response categories were underrepresented. Gene set enrichment demonstrated a predominant role of cold storage in repressing the transcription of genes associated to cell wall metabolism. In contrast, genes involved in hormone responses exhibited a more complex transcriptional response, indicating an extensive network of crosstalk between hormone signaling and low temperatures. Time course transcriptional analyses demonstrate the large contribution of gene expression regulation on the biochemical changes leading to woolliness in peach. CONCLUSION: Overall, our results provide insights on the mechanisms controlling the complex phenotypes associated to postharvest textural changes in peach and suggest that hormone mediated reprogramming previous to pit hardening affects the onset of chilling injuries.     Monte Carlo Simulation of Electron Beams for Radiotherapy - EGS4, MCNP4b and GEANT3 Intercomparison

    In medical radiation physics, an increasing number of Monte Carlo codes are being used, which requires intercomparison between them to evaluated the accuracy of the simulated results against benchmark experiments. The Monte Carlo code EGS4, commonly used to simulate electron beams from medical linear accelerators, was compared with GEANT3 and MCNP4b. Intercomparison of electron energy spectra, angular and spatial distribution were carried out for the Siemens KD2 linear accelerator, at beam energies of 10 and 15 MeV for a field size of 10x10 cm2. Indirect validation was performed against electron depth doses curves and beam profiles measured in a MP3-PTW water phantom using a Markus planar chamber.
