    Pastoral work with adjustment problems

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Boston University, 1950The purpose of this disseration is the study of the adjustment problems brought to the minister and the consideration and extent to which he can bring the discoveries of dynamic psychology and modern pastoral work to bear upon those problems. Further, it is the aim of this study to consider the church and its varied activities as one of the agencies through whose processes the individual can find help with life adjustments

Flame Movement and Pressure Development in an Engine Cylinder

    Get PDF
This investigation describes a visual method for making stroboscopic observations, through a large number of small windows, of the spread of flame throughout the combustion chamber of a gasoline engine. Data, secured by this method on a small engine burning gaseous fuels, are given to show the effects of mixture ratio, spark advance, engine speed, charge density, degree of dilution, compression ratio, and fuel composition on flame movement in the cylinder. Partial indicator diagrams showing pressure development during the combustion period are included. Although present knowledge is not sufficient to permit qualitative evaluation of the separate effects on flame movement of chemical reaction velocity, thermal expansion of burned gases, resonance, turbulence, and piston movement, the qualitative influence of certain of these factors on some of the diagrams is indicated

Analyst Coverage And The Diversification Discount

    Get PDF
We use financial analyst coverage as a measure of information asymmetry to examine excess firm values associated with single- and multi-segment firms.  We explicitly examine whether differences in analyst coverage can explain the diversification discount.  We find that information asymmetry plays a major role in the valuation of companies and explains a large portion of the diversification discount.  However, a significant diversification discount remains after controlling for the effects of analyst coverage

Managerial Incentives And Changes In Corporate Focus

We examine how Chief Executive Officer (CEO) equity ownership, CEO tenure, and the percentage of options in CEO annual compensation are related to decisions regarding changes in corporate focus.  We document that the CEOs whose companies change their level of corporate focus have significant differences from CEOs whose firms do not change focus.  However, we find no differences in the characteristics of CEOs who increase their firm’s level of diversification and the CEOs who decrease their firm’s level of diversification.  Firm characteristics, such as size or whether the firm sells at a premium or discount to its peers, are better predictors of changes in corporate focus than CEO characteristics. Overall, we find no evidence that changes in diversification are related to self-serving managers attempting to maximize their own wealth

Survival Analysis of Complete Veneer Crowns vs. Multisurface Restorations: A Dental School Patient Population

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to compare the longevity of crowns versus large multisurface restorations in posterior teeth. The investigation used the treatment database at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. The inclusion criteria for the final data set used for analysis were: only one restored tooth per patient, premolars with three or more restored surfaces, molars with four or more restored surfaces, molars and premolars restored with complete veneer metal crowns, or crowns veneered with metal and porcelain. The Kaplan-Meier approach was used to visualize the survival curves, and the Cox proportional hazards model was used for analysis of predictor variables. The investigation indicates crowns survive longer than large restorations and premolar restorations survive longer than molar restorations. The median survival for crowns exceeded 16.6 years, with the median survival of premolar restorations being 4.4 years and molar restorations 1.3 years. An interaction between age and treatment was discovered, with overall survival decreasing as patient age increases. The doctor supervising the treatment also affected survival with treatment supervised by specialists lasting longer than treatment supervised by nonspecialists

Reach in and reach out : the story of the MSc in pipeline engineering at Newcastle University

    Get PDF
This paper presents an unusual case of university-industry interaction whereby a group of small businesses came together to persuade a university to establish an MSc in Pipeline Engineering. We identify that the course contributed to regional development in four ways. Firstly, it provided graduates for local industry. Secondly, it linked local firms with pipeline engineers world wide and raised the region's profile within that network. Thirdly, it strengthened the research base of the university through the recruitment of pipeline engineers from industry and fourthly, it facilitated the possibility of joint research between the university and local firms. We question whether this model is transferable to other industry sectors/universities. We conclude that this outreach activity has been shaped by the 'reach-in' to the university of the local business community and propose a revised model of university interaction with regional industry. Traditionally universities have been seen as 'reaching out' to regional industry and the collaborations have been viewed as being instigated by the university and often research-based. Our revised model proposes an alternative mechanism whereby collaborations can be instigated by industry and through a teaching-route

Gender and PTSD: What Can We Learn from Female Police Officers?

    Get PDF
Studies of civilians typically find that female gender is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Police and military studies often find no gender differences in PTSD. We compared 157 female police officers and 124 female civilians on several variables including trauma exposure, peritraumatic emotional distress, current somatization, and cumulative PTSD symptoms. We found that despite greater exposure to assaultive violence in the officer group, female civilians reported significantly more severe PTSD symptoms. Elevated PTSD symptoms in female civilians were explained by significantly more intense peritraumatic emotional distress among female civilians. We also found that female officers showed a stronger direct relationship between peritraumatic emotional distress and current somatization. Our findings suggest that apparent gender differences in PTSD may result from differences in peritraumatic emotionality, which influence subsequent PTSD and somatization symptoms. Emotionality may be more important than biological sex in understanding gender differences in PTSD
