Yesterday\u27s Lei Feng and today\u27s young people\u27s liberation army soldiers

Lei Feng has been propagandized as a model of emulation for the People\u27s Liberation Army soldiers since the 1960s. This paper uses Lei Feng as a yardstick to measure contemporary young soldiers\u27 general behaviors and orientations. We are interested to find out to what extent contemporary young soldiers have accepted the Chinese Communist Party\u27s political education and have followed the norm set by the Party. It is found that the widely publicized Chinese role model has exerted little influence on contemporary young soldiers. Young soldiers today are utilitarian and materialistic, sharing the same youth culture with most Chinese youths of other social sectors

HOW TO INCREASE MIGRANT RESILIENCE IN CANADA: WHAT THE LEGAL SYSTEM CAN DO TO HELP

    Get PDF
Immigration is important to Canada. Migrants replenish our declining population, help drive our economy, and contribute to our labour market. By 2036, almost half of the Canadian population will be either first-generation or second-generation immigrants. While the migrant experience varies, it is recognized to be deeply challenging. Among these barriers is often the need to engage with the complex legal system during and after the settlement process. This paper uses the literature to better understand the benefits of migrants in Canada, concept of resilience, benefits of diversity in the workplace, and how law firms can leverage diversity to perform better. This paper demonstrates how law firms can benefit simultaneously while they help migrants foster higher levels of resilience by increasing their access to legal services. Research is used to provide both practical steps to take when incorporating diversity and metrics to consider when assessing the effectiveness of these efforts. Current news regarding corporate decisions are used to demonstrate the directions corporations and society are taking regarding their views on diversity. Recommendations are made to both the government and legal field to help address issues regarding access to legal services

Contextual Utility and Practicality: Cultural Research for the School Community in Hong Kong

As an intellectual project, is cultural studies actually ‘useless’ in dealing with issues closely tied to students’ everyday practices? In this article, the authors examine the problem through the case of teacher training and curriculum development in the context of educational reform in Hong Kong—in particular, through a community-interface project we are engaged in as cultural researchers at the moment

The Role of Adipocyte Hypertrophy and Hypoxia in the Development of Obesity-Associated Adipose Tissue Inflammation and Insulin Resistance

    Get PDF
Adipose tissue inflammation has been suggested to play a central role in the pathogenesis of many obesity-associated complications including insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Adipocyte hypertrophy and hypoxia especially in morbid obesity are the important sources for the development of adipose tissue inflammation. This inflammation is mediated by producing a large number of cytokines and chemokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), and regulated upon activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES). Of note, these cytokines and chemokines produced by adipocytes during hypertrophy and hypoxia are crucially involved in the initiation and development of obesity-associated inflammatory response in adipose tissue. The capacity of constitutive and regulated release of immune mediators from adipocytes demonstrates a causal link between the biology of adipocytes and immune cells, such as macrophages and T cells. Moreover, the synergistic effect of hypertrophic, hypoxia adipocytes, and adipose tissue immune cells has also been implicated in the development of obesity-induced insulin resistance. This chapter provides the overall review and update evidence to highlight the important role and possible underlying mechanism of adipocyte hypertrophy and hypoxia in the development of obesity-associated adipose tissue (AT) inflammation and insulin resistance

Fuzzy rule based multiwavelet ECG signal denoising

    Get PDF
Since different multiwavelets, pre- and post-filters have different impulse responses and frequency responses, different multiwavelets, pre- and post-filters should be selected and applied at different noise levels for signal denoising if signals are corrupted by additive white Gaussian noises. In this paper, some fuzzy rules are formulated for integrating different multiwavelets, pre- and post-filters together so that expert knowledge on employing different multiwavelets, pre- and post-filters at different noise levels on denoising performances is exploited. When an ECG signal is received, the noise level is first estimated. Then, based on the estimated noise level and our proposed fuzzy rules, different multiwavelets, pre- and post-filters are integrated together. A hard thresholding is applied on the multiwavelet coefficients. According to extensive numerical computer simulations, our proposed fuzzy rule based multiwavelet denoising algorithm outperforms traditional multiwavelet denoising algorithms by 30%

Probabilistic interpretation of path-based relevance in heterogeneous information networks

    Get PDF
As a powerful representation paradigm for networked and multi-typed data, the heterogeneous information network (HIN) is ubiquitous. Meanwhile, defining proper relevance measures has always been a fundamental problem and of great pragmatic importance for network mining tasks. Inspired by the probabilistic interpretation of existing path-based relevance measures, we propose to study HIN relevance from a probabilistic perspective. We also identify, from real-world data, and propose to model cross-meta-path synergy, which is a characteristic important for defining path-based HIN relevance and has not been modeled by existing methods. A generative model is established to derive a novel path-based relevance measure, which is data-driven and tailored for each HIN. We develop an inference algorithm to find the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate of the model parameters, which entails non-trivial tricks. Experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and relevance measure
