    Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification bacterium isolated from anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment system

    A special strain of Alcaligenes denitrificans, designated as WY200811, with heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification ability was novel isolated from an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment system and characterized. The average ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and TN (total nitrogen) removal rates of the strain were 0.026 and 0.028 gN/g·Cell·h. Under the environmental conditions of 22% DO and C/N ratio of 5, the ultimate efficiencies of nitrification and denitrification were 57.0 and 57.3%, respectively. The pH in the medium was maintained between 6.0 and 7.0. The novel strain can rapidly reduce the ammonia to nitrogen gas without nitrite accumulation. The WY200811 can be used in a full-scale anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment system for efficiency in heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification.Key words: Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification, Alcaligenes denitrificans, nitrogen balance

    Structural Simplification of Bedaquiline: the Discovery of 3-(4-(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl)phenyl)quinoline Derived Antitubercular Lead Compounds

    Bedaquiline (BDQ) is a novel and highly potent last-line antituberculosis drug that was approved by the US FDA in 2013. Owing to its stereo-structural complexity, chemical synthesis and compound optimization are rather difficult and expensive. This study describes the structural simplification of bedaquiline while preserving antitubercular activity. The compound's structure was split into fragments and reassembled in various combinations while replacing the two chiral carbon atoms with an achiral linkage instead. Four series of analogues were designed; these candidates retained their potent antitubercular activity at sub-microgram per mL concentrations against both sensitive and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. Six out of the top nine MIC-ranked candidates were found to inhibit mycobacterial ATP synthesis activity with IC50 values between 20 and 40 Όm, one had IC50>66 Όm, and two showed no inhibition, despite their antitubercular activity. These results provide a basis for the development of chemically less complex, lower-cost bedaquiline derivatives and describe the identification of two derivatives with antitubercular activity against non-ATP synthase related targets

    Let Λ\Lambda be an isolated non-trival transitive set of a C1C^1 generic diffeomorphism f\in\Diff(M). We show that the space of invariant measures supported on Λ\Lambda coincides with the space of accumulation measures of time averages on one orbit. Moreover, the set of points having this property is residual in Λ\Lambda (which implies the set of irregular+^+ points is also residual in Λ\Lambda). As an application, we show that the non-uniform hyperbolicity of irregular+^+ points in Λ\Lambda with totally 0 measure (resp., the non-uniform hyperbolicity of a generic subset in Λ\Lambda) determines the uniform hyperbolicity of Λ\Lambda

    Staggered local density-of-states around the vortex in underdoped cuprates

    We have studied a single vortex with the staggered flux (SF) core based on the SU(2) slave-boson theory of high TcT_c superconductors. We find that whereas the center in the vortex core is a SF state, as one moves away from the core center, a correlated staggered modulation of the hopping amplitude χ\chi and pairing amplitude Δ\Delta becomes predominant. We predict that in this region, the local density-of-states (LDOS) exhibits staggered modulation when measured on the bonds, which may be directly detected by STM experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A study on nitrogen removal efficiency of Pseudomonas stutzeri strains isolated from an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic wastewater treatment process

    In order to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency in an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment plant, a strain with high nitrification and denitrification capability was isolated from a specific anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment process. The characteristics of isolate were experimentally analyzed. By using the nitrogen balance method, the total nitrogen loss was calculated to be 40.1% (w/w) when the carbon source was citric acid with a C/N ratio of 5. Meanwhile, the isolated strain was identified by 16S rDNA to be a Pseudomonas stutzeri with a similarity of 99%. Varying the initial TN, the C/N, the pH value and the ambient temperature in the reaction system, the efficiency of nitrogen removal was studied. The results showed that the highest efficiency occurred when the C/N was 12, the pH value was 7 and the temperature was 32°C. The results were also compared to the practically monitoring data coming with a good agreement. Consequently, it is viable to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency by varying the reaction conditions

    Numerical Jordan-Wigner approach for two dimensional spin systems

    We present a numerical self consistent variational approach based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation for two dimensional spin systems. We apply it to the study of the well known quantum (S=1/2) antiferromagnetic XXZ system as a function of the easy-axis anisotropy \Delta on a periodic square lattice. For the SU(2) case the method converges to a N\'eel ordered ground state irrespectively of the input density profile used and in accordance with other studies. This shows the potential utility of the proposed method to investigate more complicated situations like frustrated or disordered systems.Comment: Revtex, 8 pages, 4 figure

    Designing spin-1 lattice models using polar molecules

    We describe how to design a large class of always on spin-1 interactions between polar molecules trapped in an optical lattice. The spin degrees of freedom correspond to the hyperfine levels of a ro-vibrational ground state molecule. Interactions are induced using a microwave field to mix ground states in one hyperfine manifold with the spin entangled dipole-dipole coupled excited states. Using multiple fields anistropic models in one, two, or three dimensions, can be built with tunable spatial range. An illustrative example in one dimension is the generalized Haldane model, which at a specific parameter has a gapped valence bond solid ground state. The interaction strengths are large compared to decoherence rates and should allow for probing the rich phase structure of strongly correlated systems, including dimerized and gapped phases.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    Watch me, watch you: ritual participation increases in-group displays and out-group monitoring in children

    © 2021 The Author(s). Collective rituals serve social functions for the groups that perform them, including identifying group members and signaling group commitment. A novel social group paradigm was used in an afterschool program (N = 60 4-11-year-olds) to test the influence of participating in a ritual task on in-group displays and out-group monitoring over repeated exposures to the group. The results demonstrate that ritual participation increases in-group displays (i.e., time spent displaying materials to in-group members) and out-group monitoring (i.e., time spent looking at out-group members) compared to a control task across three time points. This study provides evidence for the processes by which rituals may influence children’s behaviors toward in- and outgroup members and discusses implications for understanding the development of ritual cognition and behavior.American Psychological Foundation Elizabeth M.
