    Novel Characterization Method of Biodiesel Produced from Soybean Oil using Thermogravimetric Analysis

    The aim of this study was to demonstrate thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as a potential method for monitoring biodiesel production. Soybean oil and commercial biodiesel were mixed in different proportions by weight. Mixtures of different biodiesel/soybean oil ratios were also created by interrupting a base-catalyzed transesterification process for producing biodiesel at various times. The mixtures produced by both approaches were analyzed with TGA. The results were then compared with data obtained by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1HNMR spectroscopy). The relative weight losses in both sets of mixtures we generated correlated well to the proportion of biodiesel present in the sample. The results from both analytical methods were in good agreement and within a deviation of 5%. Thus, TGA is a simple, convenient and economical method for monitoring biodiesel production

    Simulation and Experimental Verification for a 52 GHz Wideband Trapped Surface Wave Propagation System

    Trapped surface wave (TSW) provides a flexible 2-D wireless solution when compared to existing wired and free space communications systems. This work aims to provide the theoretical guidance, supported by simulation techniques and experimental verifications, for 1) designing the wideband and highly efficient rectangular aperture TSW transducers and 2) selecting the best reactive surface impedance for high efficiency. First, a method for computing the TSW excitation efficiency is proposed for the first time and it can be applied to different kinds of reactive surface geometries and transducer apertures. Then, the relation between the TSW excitation efficiency, surface reactance, and aperture height is derived. Then, the maximum excitation efficiency, the corresponding optimal surface reactance, and aperture height are presented. Furthermore, the relation between the TSW angular coverage and aperture width is determined. These studies show that the aperture height mainly determines the TSW excitation efficiencies, while the aperture width controls the TSW angular coverage; hence, the two aperture parameters of a transducer can be independently determined. Finally, an experiment setup, based on the provided guidelines, has been built to demonstrate a 52 GHz wide 3 dB-transmission-bandwidth for high-performance communications systems

To this end, spherical sub-sampling of the raw scan is proposed to select training data that does not filter out salient obstacles. Besides, rule structure is systematically defined by considering triangular sets with an unevenly distributed standard fuzzy partition and zero order Sugeno-type consequents. This structure, which favors a faster training time and reduces the number of rule parameters, also serves to compute a fuzzy reliability mask for the continuous fuzzy surface. The paper offers a case study using a Hokuyo-based 3D rangefinder to model terrain with and without outstanding obstacles.     Classification of NDE Waveforms with Autoregressive Models

    This paper describes a new approach for classifying NDE waveforms. Using this approach a set of matched filters is constructed one for each category of waveform, based on parameters from autoregressive models. The method offers advantages in terms of hardware implementation over conventional pattern recognition approaches. Feasibility is shown using computer generated data. Results are then presented for real data from acoustic emission experiments.</p

    Optical Properties of GaAs Quantum Dots Fabricated by Filling of Self-Assembled Nanoholes

    Experimental results of the local droplet etching technique for the self-assembled formation of nanoholes and quantum rings on semiconductor surfaces are discussed. Dependent on the sample design and the process parameters, filling of nanoholes in AlGaAs generates strain-free GaAs quantum dots with either broadband optical emission or sharp photoluminescence (PL) lines. Broadband emission is found for samples with completely filled flat holes, which have a very broad depth distribution. On the other hand, partly filling of deep holes yield highly uniform quantum dots with very sharp PL lines

    Moduli of vortices and Grassmann manifolds

    We use the framework of Quot schemes to give a novel description of the moduli spaces of stable n-pairs, also interpreted as gauged vortices on a closed Riemann surface with target Mat(r x n, C), where n >= r. We then show that these moduli spaces embed canonically into certain Grassmann manifolds, and thus obtain natural Kaehler metrics of Fubini-Study type; these spaces are smooth at least in the local case r=n. For abelian local vortices we prove that, if a certain "quantization" condition is satisfied, the embedding can be chosen in such a way that the induced Fubini-Study structure realizes the Kaehler class of the usual L^2 metric of gauged vortices.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX.     Promoting contraceptive use among unmarried female migrants in one factory in Shanghai: a pilot workplace intervention

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In urban China, more single women are becoming pregnant and resorting to induced abortion, despite the wide availability of temporary methods of contraception. We developed and piloted a workplace-based intervention to promote contraceptive use in unmarried female migrants working in privately owned factories.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Quasi-experimental design. In consultation with clients, we developed a workplace based intervention to promote contraception use in unmarried female migrants in a privately owned factory. We then implemented this in one factory, using a controlled before-and-after design. The intervention included lectures, bespoke information leaflets, and support to the factory doctors in providing a contraceptive service.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>598 women participated: most were under 25, migrants to the city, with high school education. Twenty percent were lost when staff were made redundant, and implementation was logistically complicated. All women attended the initial lecture, and just over half the second lecture. Most reported reading the educational material provided (73%), but very few women reported using the free family planning services offered at the factory clinic (5%) or the Family Planning Institute (3%). At baseline, 90% (N = 539) stated that contraceptives were required if having sex before marriage; of those reporting sex in the last three months, the majority reporting using contraceptives (78%, 62/79) but condom use was low (44%, 35/79).</p> <p>Qualitative data showed that the reading material seemed to be popular and young women expressed a need for more specific reproductive health information, particularly on HIV/AIDS. Women wanted services with some privacy and anonymity, and views on the factory service were mixed.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Implementing a complex intervention with a hard to reach population through a factory in China, using a quasi-experimental design, is not easy. Further research should focus on the specific needs and service preferences of this population and these should be considered in any policy reform so that contraceptive use may be encouraged among young urban migrant workers.</p

    Dissemination of pHK01-like incompatibility group IncFII plasmids encoding CTX-M-14 in Escherichia coli from human and animal sources

    Few studies have compared CTX-M encoding plasmids identified in different ecological sources. This study aimed to analyze and compare the molecular epidemiology of plasmids encoding CTX-M-14 among strains from humans and animals. The CTX-M-14 encoding plasmids in 160 Escherichia coli isolates from animal faecal (14 pigs, 16 chickens, 12 cats, 8 cattle, 5 dogs and 3 rodents), human faecal (45 adults and 20 children) and human urine (37 adults) sources in 2002-2010 were characterized by molecular methods. The replicon types of the CTX-M-14 encoding plasmids were IncFII (n=61), I1-Iγ (n=24), other F types (n=23), B/O (n=10), K (n=6), N (n=3), A/C (n=1), HI1 (n=1), HI2 (n=1) and nontypeable (n=30). The genetic environment, ISEcp1 - bla CTX-M-14 - IS903 was found in 89.7% (52/58), 87.7% (57/65) and 86.5% (32/37) of the animal faecal, human faecal and human urine isolates, respectively. Subtyping of the 61 IncFII incompatibility group plasmids by replicon sequence typing, plasmid PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism and marker genes (yac, malB, eitA/eitC and parB/A) profiles showed that 31% (18/58), 30.6% (20/65) and 37.8% (14/37) of the plasmids originating from animal faecal, human faecal and human urine isolates, respectively, were pHK01-like. These 52 pHK01-like plasmids originated from diverse human (20 faecal isolates from 2002, 2007 to 2008, 14 urinary isolates from 2004) and animal (all faecal, 1 cattle, 1 chicken, 5 pigs, 9 cats, 1 dog, 1 rodent from 2008 to 2010) sources. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of the IncFII group, pHK01-like plasmids in the dissemination of CTX-M-14 among isolates from diverse sources. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.postprin
