Influence of Mn and Nb dopants on electric properties of chemical-solution-deposited BiFeO3 films

    Get PDF
[[abstract]]Polycrystalline Mn-doped, Nb-doped, and pure BiFeO3 (BFO) films were fabricated via chemical solution deposition (CSD) method. Influence of Mn and Nb dopants on electric properties of BFO films were studied. The current density versus electric field (J-E) characteristics indicated that conduction mechanisms of Mn-doped, Nb-doped, and pure BFO films annealed at 500 degrees C were Ohmic conduction, grain boundary limited conduction, and space charge limited conduction, respectively. The effect of Mn and Nb dopants on electric properties of BFO films was interpreted by defect chemistry and chemical reaction in the CSD process. The Nb dopant is effective in improving electrical properties of CSD-derived BFO films, while Mn is harmful in this respect.[[fileno]]2020301010008[[department]]材料科學工程學

Enophthalmos caused by an orbital venous malformation

    Get PDF
Orbital vascular malformations usually present with proptosis. We report a case where a patient with an orbital venous malformation presented with enophthalmos. Since many underlying orbital pathologies, including orbital metastases, can cause enophthalmos, it is important to investigate patients properly. Computed tomographic imaging of the orbit remains the most useful tool in the management of patients with enophthalmos.published_or_final_versio

Orbital myiasis complicating squamous cell carcinoma of eyelid

    Get PDF
Myiasis is infestation of the body by fly maggots. Immobile patients with skin wounds in exposed areas are at high risk of developing myiasis. We report a case of orbital myiasis from the species Chrysomya bezziana complicating squamous cell carcinoma of the eyelid. Magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit is useful for delineating the extent of the infestation and identifying residual maggots. In extensive orbital myiasis, exenteration is needed to prevent intracranial extension of tissue destruction.published_or_final_versio

A report on a randomly sampled questionnaire survey about renal stone disease in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of patients with renal stone in Hong Kong, and awareness of corresponding prevention strategies. Design: Telephone public survey. Setting: Hong Kong community. Participants: A public telephone survey concerning the occurrence of renal stone disease and the public awareness of the condition was performed. Respondents whose telephone numbers were randomly selected by computer and the family member of the household who had the closest birthday to that date was chosen for interview. Data collected were further adjusted for the gender and age distribution of the Hong Kong population in mid-2007. Results: A total of 1010 Hong Kong citizens aged 18 years or above were successfully interviewed in November 2007. Among them, 25 respondents themselves had a history of renal stones, yielding a point prevalence of 2.5%. In addition, 70 respondents had family members with a history of renal stones, yielding an estimated household point prevalence of 6.9%. Stone patients were mainly older, male, and imbibed less fluids than the average for all respondents. The public's concepts with regard to the diet necessary and the importance of taking more fluid to prevent stone formation was poor. Conclusion: Hong Kong has a relatively low prevalence of renal stone disease, compared to neighbouring areas. However, the local public and affected patients had little knowledge and awareness about this important health problem.published_or_final_versio

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background and aim</p> <p>The DNA repair gene <it>Ku70</it>, an important member of non-homologous end-joining repair system, is thought to play an important role in the repairing of DNA double strand breaks. It is known that defects in double strand break repair capacity can lead to irreversible genomic instability. However, the polymorphic variants of <it>Ku70</it>, have never been reported about their association with gastric cancer susceptibility.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this hospital-based case-control study, the associations of <it>Ku70 </it>promoter T-991C (rs5751129), promoter G-57C (rs2267437), promoter A-31G (rs132770), and intron 3 (rs132774) polymorphisms with gastric cancer risk in a Taiwanese population were investigated. In total, 136 patients with gastric cancer and 560 age- and gender-matched healthy controls recruited from the China Medical Hospital in Taiwan were genotyped.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>As for <it>Ku70 </it>promoter T-991C, the ORs after adjusted by age and gender of the people carrying TC and CC genotypes were 2.41 (95% CI = 1.53-3.88) and 3.21 (95% CI = 0.96-9.41) respectively, compared to those carrying TT wild-type genotype. The <it>P </it>for trend was significant (<it>P </it>< 0.0001). In the dominant model (TC plus CC versus TT), the association between <it>Ku70 </it>promoter T-991C polymorphism and the risk for gastric cancer was also significant (adjusted OR = 2.48, 95% CI = 1.74-3.92). When stratified by age and gender, the association was restricted to those at the age of 55 or elder of age (TC vs TT: adjusted OR = 2.52, 95% CI = 1.37-4.68, <it>P </it>= 0.0139) and male (TC vs TT: adjusted OR = 2.58, 95% CI = 1.33-4.47, <it>P </it>= 0.0085). As for the other three polymorphisms, there was no difference between both groups in the distributions of their genotype frequencies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In conclusion, the <it>Ku70 </it>promoter T-991C (rs5751129), but not the <it>Ku70 </it>promoter C-57G (rs2267437), promoter A-31G (rs132770) or intron 3 (rs132774), is associated with gastric cancer susceptibility. This polymorphism may be a novel useful marker for gastric carcinogenesis.</p

Clinical course, costs and predictive factors for response to treatment in carpal tunnel syndrome: The PALMS study protocol

    Get PDF
Background Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common neuropathy of the upper limb and a significant contributor to hand functional impairment and disability. Effective treatment options include conservative and surgical interventions, however it is not possible at present to predict the outcome of treatment. The primary aim of this study is to identify which baseline clinical factors predict a good outcome from conservative treatment (by injection) or surgery in patients diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. Secondary aims are to describe the clinical course and progression of CTS, and to describe and predict the UK cost of CTS to the individual, National Health Service (NHS) and society over a two year period. Methods/Design In this prospective observational cohort study patients presenting with clinical signs and symptoms typical of CTS and in whom the diagnosis is confirmed by nerve conduction studies are invited to participate. Data on putative predictive factors are collected at baseline and follow-up through patient questionnaires and include standardised measures of symptom severity, hand function, psychological and physical health, comorbidity and quality of life. Resource use and cost over the 2 year period such as prescribed medications, NHS and private healthcare contacts are also collected through patient self-report at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. The primary outcome used to classify treatment success or failures will be a 5-point global assessment of change. Secondary outcomes include changes in clinical symptoms, functioning, psychological health, quality of life and resource use. A multivariable model of factors which predict outcome and cost will be developed. Discussion This prospective cohort study will provide important data on the clinical course and UK costs of CTS over a two-year period and begin to identify predictive factors for treatment success from conservative and surgical interventions

Fibroma of tendon sheath located within the ankle joint capsule

    Get PDF
We report a very rare case of fibroma of the tendon sheath arising from the anteromedial ankle joint capsule, with no apparent connection to any tendon in the area, found in a 58-year-old patient complaining of progressive local swelling. This uncommon tumor has its usual localization in tendon sheaths, is extremely rare in joint capsules, and has never been described in this location previously. MRI showed nonuniform low signal intensity in T1- and T2-weighted images and high intensity in STIR images. The mass was completely excised by open surgery. Histopathological analysis later confirmed the diagnosis of a fibroma of the tendon sheath
