    Small Business Internet Use and Strategic Flexibility

    Research on SME Internet use has focused almost exclusively on factors leading to the adoption of Internet technologies. In this study, we focus on the potentially valuable connection between Internet use and strategic flexibility. Specifically, we propose that Internet use for communications will promote greater strategic flexibility for the small firm, but only in a dynamic environment. The results, based on a sample of 160 small Midwest companies, largely support this hypothesis. Environmental dynamism was found to moderate the relationship between Internet use for communications and strategic flexibility. Use of the Internet for communications was found to be positively and significantly related to strategic flexibility in a dynamic environment. As expected, dynamism did not moderate the relationship between Internet use for transactions and strategic flexibility. These findings hold implications for future research and for managers of small firms attempting to effectively leverage the Internet for competitive advantage

    The purpose of the current study was to assess the impact of information technology on strategic flexibility for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Results of the study show that under conditions of low environmental dynamism, IT capabilities are associated with greater reactive strategic flexibility. Specifically, IT capabilities enabling the management of internal activities was significant. Under conditions of high environmental dynamism, IT capabilities are associated with greater proactive strategic flexibility. Specifically, IT capabilities enabling the management of competitor information was significant. Managerial as well as future research implications are discussed

    Serotonin and Dopamine Protect from Hypothermia/Rewarming Damage through the CBS/ H2S Pathway

    Biogenic amines have been demonstrated to protect cells from apoptotic cell death. Herein we show for the first time that serotonin and dopamine increase H2S production by the endogenous enzyme cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) and protect cells against hypothermia/rewarming induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and apoptosis. Treatment with both compounds doubled CBS expression through mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and increased H2S production in cultured rat smooth muscle cells. In addition, serotonin and dopamine treatment significantly reduced ROS formation. The beneficial effect of both compounds was minimized by inhibition of their re-uptake and by pharmacological inhibition of CBS or its down-regulation by siRNA. Exogenous administration of H2S and activation of CBS by Prydoxal 5′-phosphate also protected cells from hypothermic damage. Finally, serotonin and dopamine pretreatment of rat lung, kidney, liver and heart prior to 24 h of hypothermia at 3°C followed by 30 min of rewarming at 37°C upregulated the expression of CBS, strongly reduced caspase activity and maintained the physiological pH compared to untreated tissues. Thus, dopamine and serotonin protect cells against hypothermia/rewarming induced damage by increasing H2S production mediated through CBS. Our data identify a novel molecular link between biogenic amines and the H2S pathway, which may profoundly affect our understanding of the biological effects of monoamine neurotransmitters

    The future of transformative events: An event leaders’ perspective

    Purpose – Focussing on the perspective of business event leaders’ perspective, this study explores the future of transformative experience (TE) events, recognising a paradigm shift from organising conventional events to designing and guiding transformative experiences in the MICE context.Design/methodology/approach – Using a qualitative interview-based design, insights from 20 international business events industry leaders were gathered and analysed using thematic analysis through a multi-step process with MAXQDA.Findings – The findings discuss the future of transformative events by identifying the paradigm shift towards TE in business events and outline key dimensions of the leader’s and team's mindset and skills. Five design principles for TE events in the MICE sector are identified: Design for change; emotionally experiential environments; personal engagement; responsibility; and, transformative measurement.Originality/value – The study adds to the emerging body of knowledge on transformative experiences and contributes to an extended stakeholder perspective, namely that of business event leaders and their teams who are instrumental in facilitating transformative events. An original framework for designing TE MICE events is offered as a theoretical contribution.Practical implications – The study offers a snapshot of how transformative events of the future could be designed and suggests a series of practical insights for MICE event leaders and organisers seeking to leverage events as a catalyst for intentional transformation, positive impact and long-lasting change
