Investigation of Multiple Recognitions Used for EFL Writing in Authentic Contexts
Recognition technologies had been prevailing and widely used for EFL learning. We investigated the different recognitions used for EFL writing based on image-to-text, translated speech-to-text, and location-to-text recognitions – ITR, TSTR, and LTR. A quasi-experiment was implemented for 12 weeks in a vocational high school with experimental and control groups in two stages. Pre-test, posttests 1 and 2, questionnaires, and interviews were conducted and analyzed. Experimental learners, who wrote writing based on ITR and TSTR, outperformed control learners who wrote that based on TSTR only. Also, the experimental learners, who wore writing based on ITR, TSTR, and LTR, outperformed the control learners who wrote that based on ITR and TSTR. Particularly, LTR was beneficial for identifying controlling ideas and addressing the writing topics. ITR was beneficial for brainstorming and generating more ideas. TSTR was beneficial for yielding and transferring writing contents into words. The multiple recognitions were beneficial for most EFL writers, especially for low-ability language writers. Most writers were interested in describing based on authentic context learning. However, they complained about the low accuracy of LTR and TSTR and the difficulty of ITR texts when writing. Accordingly, the LTR database with various categories of places, the generation of ITR based on the language abilities of learners, and the higher accuracy of TSTR should be strictly considered when applying multiple recognitions for EFL writing
Entropy Projection Curved Gabor with Random Forest and SVM for Face Recognition
In this work, we propose a workflow for face recognition under occlusion using the entropy projection from the curved Gabor filter, and create a representative and compact features vector that describes a face. Despite the reduced vector obtained by the entropy projection, it still presents opportunity for further dimensionality reduction. Therefore, we use a Random Forest classifier as an attribute selector, providing a 97% reduction of the original vector while keeping suitable accuracy. A set of experiments using three public image databases: AR Face, Extended Yale B with occlusion and FERET illustrates the proposed methodology, evaluated using the SVM classifier. The results obtained in the experiments show promising results when compared to the available approaches in the literature, obtaining 98.05% accuracy for the complete AR Face, 97.26% for FERET and 81.66% with Yale with 50% occlusion
Coherent Electron-Phonon Coupling in Tailored Quantum Systems
The coupling between a two-level system and its environment leads to
decoherence. Within the context of coherent manipulation of electronic or
quasiparticle states in nanostructures, it is crucial to understand the sources
of decoherence. Here, we study the effect of electron-phonon coupling in a
graphene and an InAs nanowire double quantum dot. Our measurements reveal
oscillations of the double quantum dot current periodic in energy detuning
between the two levels. These periodic peaks are more pronounced in the
nanowire than in graphene, and disappear when the temperature is increased. We
attribute the oscillations to an interference effect between two alternative
inelastic decay paths involving acoustic phonons present in these materials.
This interpretation predicts the oscillations to wash out when temperature is
increased, as observed experimentally.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Patterning of an amine-terminated nanolayer by extreme ultraviolet
The adsorption of NH3 molecules on the Si(100)2x1 surface constructs a cleaner and more well-defined amine layer than self-assembled monolayer such as aminosilylated layer, which make it possible to study photoinduced reactions between amines and monochromatic light with shorter wavelength than ultraviolet, i.e., extreme ultraviolet and soft x ray. We report that the molecular layer of amine groups reacts with extreme ultraviolet and soft x ray, which can be used to make fine patterns on the amine-terminated layer. The amine patterning with the leading postoptical lithography using extreme ultraviolet could be applied to fabricating future molecular nanodevices.open1155sciescopu
High-transition-temperature superconductivity in the absence of the magnetic-resonance mode
The fundamental mechanism that gives rise to high-transition-temperature
(high-Tc) superconductivity in the copper oxide materials has been debated
since the discovery of the phenomenon. Recent work has focussed on a sharp
'kink' in the kinetic energy spectra of the electrons as a possible signature
of the force that creates the superconducting state. The kink has been related
to a magnetic resonance and also to phonons. Here we report that infrared
spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d), (Bi-2212) show that this sharp feature can be
separated from a broad background and, interestingly, weakens with doping
before disappearing completely at a critical doping level of 0.23 holes per
copper atom. Superconductivity is still strong in terms of the transition
temperature (Tc approx 55 K), so our results rule out both the magnetic
resonance peak and phonons as the principal cause of high-Tc superconductivity.
The broad background, on the other hand, is a universal property of the copper
oxygen plane and a good candidate for the 'glue' that binds the electrons.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Assessing the contribution of the herpes simplex virus DNA polymerase to spontaneous mutations
BACKGROUND: The thymidine kinase (tk) mutagenesis assay is often utilized to determine the frequency of herpes simplex virus (HSV) replication-mediated mutations. Using this assay, clinical and laboratory HSV-2 isolates were shown to have a 10- to 80-fold higher frequency of spontaneous mutations compared to HSV-1. METHODS: A panel of HSV-1 and HSV-2, along with polymerase-recombinant viruses expressing type 2 polymerase (Pol) within a type 1 genome, were evaluated using the tk and non-HSV DNA mutagenesis assays to measure HSV replication-dependent errors and determine whether the higher mutation frequency of HSV-2 is a distinct property of type 2 polymerases. RESULTS: Although HSV-2 have mutation frequencies higher than HSV-1 in the tk assay, these errors are assay-specific. In fact, wild type HSV-1 and the antimutator HSV-1 PAA(r)5 exhibited a 2–4 fold higher frequency than HSV-2 in the non-HSV DNA mutatagenesis assay. Furthermore, regardless of assay, HSV-1 recombinants expressing HSV-2 Pol had error rates similar to HSV-1, whereas the high mutator virus, HSV-2 6757, consistently showed signficant errors. Additionally, plasmid DNA containing the HSV-2 tk gene, but not type 1 tk or LacZ DNA, was shown to form an anisomorphic DNA stucture. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the Pol is not solely responsible for the virus-type specific differences in mutation frequency. Accordingly, it is possible that (a) mutations may be modulated by other viral polypeptides cooperating with Pol, and (b) the localized secondary structure of the viral genome may partially account for the apparently enhanced error frequency of HSV-2
Rare gallbladder adenomyomatosis presenting as atypical cholecystitis: case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gallbladder adenomyomatosis is a benign condition characterized by hyperplastic change in the gallbladder wall and overgrowth of the mucosa because of an unknown cause. Patients with gallbladder adenomyomatosis usually present with abdominal pain. However, we herein describe a case of a patient with gallbladder adenomyomatosis who did not present with abdominal pain, but with only fever.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 34-year-old man presented to our hospital with a fever. No abdominal discomfort was declared. His physical examination showed no abnormalities. Ultrasound of the abdomen revealed thickness of the gallbladder. Acute cholecystitis was diagnosed. The fever persisted even after 1 week of antibiotic therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen showed gallbladder adenomyomatosis with intramural Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses. Exploratory laparotomy with cholecystectomy was performed. The fever recovered and no residual symptoms were reported at the 3-year follow-up.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Gallbladder adenomyomatosis can present with fever as the only symptom. Although the association between gallbladder adenomyomatosis and malignancy has yet to be elucidated, previous reports have shown a strong association between gallbladder carcinoma and a subtype of gallbladder adenomyomatosis. Surgical intervention remains the first-choice treatment for patients with gallbladder adenomyomatosis.</p
