    Novel InGaP/GaAsSb/GaAs DHBTs

    A study of the InGaP/GaAsSb/GaAs double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) is presented. Novel device structure is designed. A fully strained pseudomorphic GaAsSb with 8.0% Sb composition is used as the base layer, while an InGaP layer as the emitter which both eliminates the misfit dislocations and increases the valence band discontinuity at the InGaP/GaAsSb interface. A current gain of 22.6 has been obtained from the InGaP/GaAsSb/GaAs DHBT. Typical turn-on voltage of the device is 0.973 V which is 0.116V lower than that of traditional InGaP/GaAs HBT. Moreover, the current transport mechanism of the InGaP/GaAsSb/GaAs DHBTs is investigated. These results show that GaAsSb is a promising base material for reducing the turn-on voltage of GaAs HBTs.published_or_final_versio

    Classwide Peer Tutoring with or without Reinforcement: effects on academic responding, content coverage, achievement, intrinsic interest and reported project experiences

    The present study examined the effects of Classwide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) under two conditions-with reinforcement (CWPT+ R) and without reinforcement (CWPT - R)-on 77 students' spelling performance and intrinsic interest in lower secondary school Integrated Science. The students displayed educational attainments in the average range. Both CWPT approaches led to significant improvements in spelling test performance. Both groups also evaluated the programme positively. However, the CWPT + R group made significantly greater learning gains than did the CWPT - R students. These appeared to be related to higher levels of academic responding. Despite their impressive spelling gains, students in the CWPT + R group displayed significantly lower intrinsic interest in Integrated Science after involvement in CWPT. However, great caution should be exercised in interpreting this last result, as statistically significant effects were not found when group differences at post-test were examined by way of t-test and analysis of covariance methods. In summary, the data from this study suggest: (a) that the CWPT method of instruction is useful for helping lower secondary school students, (b) that reinforcers may increase learning gains by encouraging higher rates of responding, but (c) that there is an indication, subject to caution, that these reinforcers may possibly depress intrinsic interest in an academic activity (science in the case of this study).published_or_final_versio

    Identification and characterization of long-range SOX9 enhancers in limb development

    The transcription factor Sox9 is a master regulator of skeletogenesis. Heterozygous mutations of human SOX9 result in Campomelic Dysplasia (CD), in which affected individuals display distinct abnormalities in limbs and other skeletal assemblies. Recently, chromosomal translocations and deletions at >1Mb from SOX9 have been detected in some CD patients, suggesting the requirement of long‐range regulatory elements in mediating both spatiotemporal and dosage of Sox9 during limb development. To this end, we exploited several published ChIP‐Seq data, and identified nine, evolutionarily conserved, putative limb enhancers of SOX9, namely E1Sox9 to E9Sox9. Transgenic mouse embryos carrying E1Sox9‐driven LacZ reporter showed discrete transgene expression at the pre‐scapular domain where endogenous Sox9 is also expressed. Bioinformatic analyses on our candidate enhancers result in the identification of several signaling effector binding motifs, and indeed, we revealed that BMP‐Smad and Shh‐Gli pathways are possible upstream regulatory networks that govern the spatiotemporal and dosage of limb Sox9 expression via our predicted enhancers, respectively. Our results unveil the underlying molecular control in governing the complex patterning of Sox9 expression in the developing limb, and provide new molecular insight to the etiology of CD syndrome.postprin

    Indexación: Web of ScienceBlazars, one of the most extreme classes of active galaxies, constitute so far the largest known population of.-ray sources, and their number is continuously growing in the Fermi catalogs. However, in the latest release of the Fermi catalog there is still a large fraction of sources that are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs) for which optical spectroscopic observations are necessary to confirm their nature and their associations. In addition, about one-third of the gamma-ray point sources listed in the Third Fermi-LAT Source Catalog (3FGL) are still unassociated and lacking an assigned lower-energy counterpart. Since 2012 we have been carrying out an optical spectroscopic campaign to observe blazar candidates to confirm their nature. In this paper, the sixth of the series, we present optical spectroscopic observations for 30 gamma-ray blazar candidates from different observing programs we carried out with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, William Herschel Telescope, Observatorio Astronomico Nacional, Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, and Magellan. Telescopes. We found that 21 out of 30 sources investigated are BL Lac objects, while the remaining targets are classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars showing the typical broad emission lines of normal quasi-stellar objects. We conclude that our selection of gamma-ray blazar. candidates based on their multifrequency properties continues to be a successful way to discover potential low-energy counterparts of the Fermi. unidentified gamma-ray sources and to confirm the nature of BCUs.http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/0004-6256/151/4/95/met

    Comparative methylome analysis in solid tumors reveals aberrant methylation at chromosome 6p in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has the highest incidence in Southern China. Aberrant methylation at the promoter region of tumor suppressors is frequently reported in NPC; however, genome-wide methylation changes have not been comprehensively investigated. Therefore, we systematically analyzed methylome data in 25 primary NPC tumors and nontumor counterparts using a high-throughput approach with the Illumina HumanMethylation450 BeadChip. Comparatively, we examined the methylome data of 11 types of solid tumors collected by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). In NPC, the hypermethylation pattern was more dominant than hypomethylation and the majority of de novo methylated loci were within or close to CpG islands in tumors. The comparative methylome analysis reveals hypermethylation at chromosome 6p21.3 frequently occurred in NPC (false discovery rate; FDR=1.33 × 10 -9 ), but was less obvious in other types of solid tumors except for prostate and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive gastric cancer (FDR < 10 -3 ). Bisulfite pyrosequencing results further confirmed the aberrant methylation at 6p in an additional patient cohort. Evident enrichment of the repressive mark H3K27me3 and active mark H3K4me3 derived from human embryonic stem cells were found at these regions, indicating both DNA methylation and histone modification function together, leading to epigenetic deregulation in NPC. Our study highlights the importance of epigenetic deregulation in NPC. Polycomb Complex 2 (PRC2), responsible for H3K27 trimethylation, is a promising therapeutic target. A key genomic region on 6p with aberrant methylation was identified. This region contains several important genes having potential use as biomarkers for NPC detection.published_or_final_versio

    Au/n-ZnO rectifying contact fabricated with hydrogen peroxide pretreatment

    Au contacts were deposited on n -type ZnO single crystals with and without hydrogen peroxide pretreatment for the ZnO substrate. The Au/ZnO contacts fabricated on substrates without H2 O2 pretreatment were Ohmic and those with H2 O2 pretreatment were rectifying. With an aim of fabricating a good quality Schottky contact, the rectifying property of the Au/ZnO contact was systemically investigated by varying the treatment temperature and duration. The best performing Schottky contact was found to have an ideality factor of 1.15 and a leakage current of ∼ 10-7 A cm-2. A multispectroscopic study, including scanning electron microscopy, positron annihilation spectroscopy, deep level transient spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence, showed that the H2 O2 treatment removed the OH impurity and created Zn-vacancy related defects hence decreasing the conductivity of the ZnO surface layer, a condition favorable for forming good Schottky contact. However, the H2 O2 treatment also resulted in a deterioration of the surface morphology, leading to an increase in the Schottky contact ideality factor and leakage current in the case of nonoptimal treatment time and temperature. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    NF-κB p65 Subunit Is Modulated by Latent Transforming Growth Factor-β Binding Protein 2 (LTBP2) in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma HONE1 and HK1 Cells

    NF-kappa B is a well-characterized transcription factor, widely known as a key player in tumor-derived inflammation and cancer development. Herein, we present the functional and molecular relevance of the canonical NF-kappa B p65 subunit in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Loss-and gain-of-function approaches were utilized to reveal the functional characteristics of p65 in propagating tumor growth, tumor-associated angiogenesis, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in NPC cells. Extracellular inflammatory stimuli are critical factors that trigger the NF-kappa B p65 signaling; hence, we investigated the components of the tumor microenvironment that might potentially influence the p65 signaling pathway. This led to the identification of an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein that was previously reported as a candidate tumor suppressor in NPC. Our studies on the Latent Transforming Growth Factor-beta Binding Protein 2 (LTBP2) protein provides substantial evidence that it can modulate the p65 transcriptional activity. Re-expression of LTBP2 elicits tumor suppressive effects that parallel the inactivation of p65 in NPC cells. LTBP2 was able to reduce phosphorylation of p65 at Serine 536, inhibit nuclear localization of active phosphorylated p65, and impair the p65 DNA-binding ability. This results in a consequential down-regulation of p65-related gene expression. Therefore, the data suggest that the overall up-regulation of p65 expression and the loss of this candidate ECM tumor suppressor are milestone events contributing to NPC development.published_or_final_versio
