The authors propose an interpretive hypothesis for the occurrence of a number of
clay anchors and clay spindle whorls inside a narrow chamber of the Tas-Silġ “sanctuary”
dating to the Baħrija period (11th-8th centuries BC). Although these objects
may result from textile production carried out within the “sanctuary”, it seems likely
that such a concentration testifies a symbolic activity of some kind, perhaps a votive
deposition
sulle problematiche appena esposte.
Ukopi na brončanodobnim utvrđenim lokalitetima na Jadranu: Coppa Nevigata i istarske gradine
Around the mid-second millennium BC, some inhumations and disarticulated bones were buried in the area of the fortification lines at the Coppa Nevigata settlement (northern Apulia). This funerary custom appears to be anomalous in the context of Bronze Age southern Italy. On the other hand, such a burial location near to a fortification wall mirrors the funerary evidence from Bronze Age hillforts (castellieri/gradine) in Istria, a region that indeed had close relationships with northern Apulia. Evidence from other European regions is also taken into account, in order to evaluate to what extent this phenomenon was a distinctive trait pointing to interaction between the south-western and north-eastern Adriatic and what their nature was. European contexts offer only generic
similarities, whereas the consistency of funerary practices at settlements in the Adriatic area, based on a close association with defensive lines, appears to be far from random.
SGDE: Secure Generative Data Exchange for Cross-Silo Federated Learning
Privacy regulation laws, such as GDPR, impose transparency and security as
design pillars for data processing algorithms. In this context, federated
learning is one of the most influential frameworks for privacy-preserving
distributed machine learning, achieving astounding results in many natural
language processing and computer vision tasks. Several federated learning
frameworks employ differential privacy to prevent private data leakage to
unauthorized parties and malicious attackers. Many studies, however, highlight
the vulnerabilities of standard federated learning to poisoning and inference,
thus raising concerns about potential risks for sensitive data. To address this
issue, we present SGDE, a generative data exchange protocol that improves user
security and machine learning performance in a cross-silo federation. The core
of SGDE is to share data generators with strong differential privacy guarantees
trained on private data instead of communicating explicit gradient information.
These generators synthesize an arbitrarily large amount of data that retain the
distinctive features of private samples but differ substantially. In this work,
SGDE is tested in a cross-silo federated network on images and tabular
datasets, exploiting beta-variational autoencoders as data generators. From the
results, the inclusion of SGDE turns out to improve task accuracy and fairness,
as well as resilience to the most influential attacks on federated learning
In the site of Selva dei Muli, located in the Sacco River Valley, relevant archaeological traces dating to the Copper Age have been unearthed by two different research teams at different times. Two main nuclei of finds and structures have been recognized. According to the Author of the latter excavations, these nuclei clearly differ both chronologically (two subsequent phases) and in terms of patterns of use of the area. In the first phase a ditched settlement was possibly located on the north-eastern slope of the hill. Then in the second phase the ditch was obliterated and the settlement also extended on the northern slope. In this paper the possibility that these two nuclei of finds are actually more integrated and belong to a single community is discussed.
