    Exploring short intramolecular interactions in alkylaromatic substrates

    From proteins and peptides to semiconducting polymers, aliphatic chains on aromatic groups are recurring motifs in macromolecules from very diverse application fields. Fields in which molecular folding and packing determine the macroscopic physical properties that make such advanced materials appealing in the first place. Within each macromolecule, the intrinsic structure of each unit defines how it interacts with its neighbours, ultimately opening up or denying certain backbone conformations. This eventually also determines how macromolecules interact with each other. This account deals specifically with the conformational problem of many common alkylaromatic units, examining the features of an intramolecular interaction involving a side chain with as few as three methylene groups. A set of 23 model compounds featuring an intramolecular interaction between an aliphatic X-H (X = C, N, O, and S) bond and an aromatic ring was considered. Quantitative computational analysis was made possible, thanks to complete basis set extrapolated CCSD(T) calculations and NCI topological analysis, the latter of which revealed an elaborate network of dispersive and steric interactions leading to somewhat unintuitive and unexpected results, such as the higher energetic stability of certain twisted conformational isomers over those with extended side chains. Vicinal covalent effects from polarizing groups and various heteroatoms, along with the occurrence of non-dispersive phenomena, were also investigated. The conclusions drawn from the investigation include a comprehensive set of guidelines intended to aid in the prediction of the most stable conformation for this class of building blocks. Our findings affect a variety of different research fields, including the tailoring of functional materials for organic electronics and photovoltaics, with insights into a rational treatment of conformational disorder, and the study of protein- and peptide-folding preferences, putting an emphasis on peculiar interactions between the backbone and aromatic residues

    Uterine fibroid pseudocapsule studied by transmission electronmicroscopy.

    OBJECTIVE: The fibroid pseudocapsule is a structure which surrounds the uterine fibroid, separates it from the uterine tissue and contains a vascular network rich in neurotransmitters like a neurovascular bundle. The authors examined the composition of the fibroid pseudocapsule using electron microscopy. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty non-pregnant patients were submitted to laparoscopic myomectomy by the intracapsular method and samples of the removed pseudocapsules were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: At the ultrastructural level the pseudocapsule cells have the features of smooth muscle cells similar to the myometrium. So, the pseudocapsules are part of the myometrium which compresses the leiomyoma. CONCLUSION: This ultrastructural feature suggests that when removing fibroids their pseudocapsules should be preserved. This study confirms preliminary evidence that pseudocapsules contain neuropeptides together with their related fibers, as a neurovascular bundle. The surgeon's behavior should be directed to carefully control and spare this muscular surrounding tissue during fibroid excision, in order to preserve the myometrium as much as possible

    An FPGA-based versatile development system for endoscopic capsule design optimization

    This work presents a development system, based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), that was specifically designed for testing the entire electronics to be integrated in an endoscopic capsule, such as a camera, an image compression engine, a high-speed telemetric system, illumination and inertial sensors. Thanks to its high flexibility, several features were tested and evaluated, thus allowing to find the optimal configuration, in terms of power consumption, performances and size, to be fit in a capsule. As final result, an average frame rate of 19 frame per second (fps) over a transmission channel of 1.5 Mbit/s was chosen as the best choice for the development of a miniaturized endoscopic capsule prototype

    Venous wall ultrastructure in generalized venomegaly.

    The ultrastructure of thè v. colica sinistra in a case of generalized vasomegaìy in man was examined. Elastic material was found in three forms: as a lightly osmiophii amorphous material bordering on myocytes, as a highly osmiophii elastic membrana, and as highly osmiophii slim elastic fibres of different orientation in thè tunica media and adventitia. The slightly osmiophii elastic material is assumed to be newly formed. by pinocytotic activity of thè myocytes. The highly osmiophii elastic material indicatss its impairment. No typical atherosclerotic changes were found in thè examined vein. Based on a comparison with previous findings in thè case of vasomegaìy of thè a. mesenterica inferior, thè authors conclude that thè venomegaly phenomenon is connected with degenerative changes in thè elastic material of thè vessel wall

    Inflammation and Neurotransmission of the Vescico-Uterine Space in Cesarean Sections:

    Collagen IV and laminin play a key role in regulating stiffness, elasticity and flexibility of the vescico-uterine space (VUS) tissue. The neurotensin (NT), the neuropeptide tyrosine (NPY) and the protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) possessing vasorelaxation and tissue vascularization activities, play key roles in cervical ripening, scar innervations and pain control. We propose that the integrity of these substances in VUS tissue is compromised after Cesarean section (CS), since wound healing disturbances and pelvic pain, as well as pregnancy and delivery complications, are related with lower uterine segment dysfunctions after CS. Therefore, the contents of collagen IV, laminin, NT, NPY and PGP 9.5 nerve fibres from the VUS tissue samples obtained during the first CS and the repeated CS were comparatively studied. VUS specimens were collected from 104 patients during CS and evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Collagen IV and laminin were mostly found in the vascular membrane bounds and their images were quantitatively evaluated by Quantimet Leica analyzer software. Differences of collagen IV, laminin, NT, NPY and PGP 9.5 values in VUS tissue between the first CS and the repeat CS samples were calculated by Student's Mest. Reduced laminin and increased collagen IV values were observed in the VUS scar tissue after the repeated CS in comparison with those of VUS intact tissue obtained during the first CS. Significantly higher values of nerve fibres, containing NT, NPY and PGP 9.5 were registered in intact VUS tissue samples, respectively 5±0.7, 7±0.6 and 5±0.9 CU, than those of VUS scar tissue samples obtained during the repeated CS, respectively 3±0.6,2±0.4 and 3±0.7 CU (p<0.05). The authors observed increased collagen IV and reduced laminin values after the repeated CS which might be the key signs of inflammatory damage of VUS scar tissue by CS. These findings were strengthened by the registration of decreased NT, NPY and PGP 9.5 values in the same samples, which are important neurotransmitters and are responsible for optimal wound healing, pain control and lower uterine segment functions

    Clinical and morphological characteristics of head-facial haemangiomas

    BACKGROUND: Haemangiomas of the head or face are a frequent vascular pathology, consisting in an embryonic dysplasia that involves the cranial-facial vascular network. Haemangiomas show clinical, morphological, developmental and structural changes during their course. METHODS: The clinical characteristics of head-facial haemagiomas were studied in 28 individuals (9 males and 19 females) admitted in our Hospital. Sixteen of these patients(n = 16) underwent surgery for the removal of the haemangiomas. All the removed tissues were transferred in experimental laboratories for the staining of microanatomical details, somatic and visceral nerve fibres, adrenergic and catecholaminergic nerve fibres. Beta-adrenergic receptors were died with a fluorescent method. All results were submitted to the quantitative analysis of images and statistical evaluation of the data. RESULTS: The morphological results revealed numerous micro-anatomical characteristics of the haemangiomatous vessels. The somatic and visceral nerve fibres were poor and located exclusively in the adventitial layer. There was a marked decrease of adrenergic nerve fibres in the haemangiomatous vessels. The fluorescence of catecholaminergic nerve fibres and the overall area of fluorescent structures were also decreased in haemangiomatous vessels. Beta adrenergic receptors are strongly decreased in haemangiomatous vessels. The morphometrical analysis of images and statistical evaluation of the data confirmed all our experimental results. CONCLUSION: The catecholaminergic innervation of the human haemangiomatous vessels comprises nerve fibres containing the main catecholaminergic neurotransmitters that are sympathetic in nature. These neurotransmitters are closely related to beta-adrenergic receptors. The sympathetic nervous system plays a key role in the control of the vascular bed flow and vascular motility in both normal and haemangiomatous vessels

    Anodic oxidation in micro-arc regime is one of the most investigated techniques used to coat magnesium alloys with ceramic coatings for protection from corrosion and wear. The anodization electrolyte composition affects the current/voltage characteristic of the cell, the anodic oxide layer morphology and its behaviour in aggressive environment. In this paper the influence of the electrolyte composition on the anodic oxidation process and oxide properties is discussed. Scanning electron microscopy, x- ray diffraction, and x- ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to assess morphology, crystallographic structure and composition of the anodic oxide. Electrochemical polarization tests were performed to evaluate the corrosion resistance behaviour of the coated magnesium alloys
