The livestock roles in the wellbeing of rural communities of Timor-Leste
The livestock species play very important economic and socio-cultural roles for the wellbeing of rural households, such as food supply, source of income, asset saving, source of employment, soil fertility, livelihoods, transport, agricultural traction, agricultural diversification and sustainable agricultural production. The aim of this work was to identify and characterize the different roles that livestock and livestock species play in rural communities of Timor-Leste, highlighting the importance of animal production for the wellbeing and rural development, and relate the functions performed by livestock production with economic, social and cultural attributes of the communities. The data used in this study were collected in 2011 through a questionnaire survey in three rural communities in the district of Bobonaro, namely in a mountain area, an irrigation plain and a coastal zone, and were complemented with secondary data. Livestock production in Timor-Leste is predominantly familiar being chickens, pigs, goats, cattle, horses, buffaloes and sheep the main species. Beyond the economic function, each livestock species also performs social and cultural functions
Flavonoids in phylloclades discriminate endemic Semele androgyna chemotypes from Madeira
Thirty-five randomly-collected Semele androgyna Kunth
samples were screened by RP-HPLC for their phenolic
composition. Fraction analysis allowed the detection of
17 different compounds. According to their retention
times and UV spectra obtained by diode array analysis,
these phenolics represent three classes: phenolic
acids, flavones and flavonols. Co-chromatography with
specific standards enabled identification of quercetin,
rutin and quercitrin in Semele tissues for the first time.
Polymorphism based on phenolic composition was
evaluated using multivariate analysis and showed four
distinct S. androgyna clusters. This polymorphism was
not associated with morphological diversity or different
in ambient light intensities. Biochemical differentiation
is thus present in this species. The application of
multivariate analysis techniques to RP-HPLC data has
allowed the classification of samples into two groups,
previously proposed on the basis of morphological and
cytotaxonomical information. Therefore, the use of
phenolics as chemotaxonomic markers in Semele is
highly recommended because of its diagnostic value,
even at a subspecies level. Discriminant canonical
analysis and Mahalanobis distances confirmed these
clusters as recognisable chemosystematic units.
However, these units do not support the separation of S.

Susceptibility amplitude ratio for generic competing systems
We calculate the susceptibility amplitude ratio near a generic higher
character Lifshitz point up to one-loop order. We employ a renormalization
group treatment with independent scaling transformations associated to the
various inequivalent subspaces in the anisotropic case in order to compute the
ratio above and below the critical temperature and demonstrate its
universality. Furthermore, the isotropic results with only one type of
competition axes have also been shown to be universal. We describe how the
simpler situations of -axial Lifshitz points as well as ordinary
(noncompeting) systems can be retrieved from the present framework.Comment: 20 pages, no figure

Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar
collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run
of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8
TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining
particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet.
The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence
implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative
calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to Physics Letters
