Metal-Insulator Transition Accompanied with a Charge Ordering in the One-dimensional t-J' Model
We study the metal-insulator transition accompanied with a charge ordering in
the one-dimensional (1D) t-J' model at quarter filling by the density matrix
renormalization group method. In this model the nearest-neighbor hopping energy
t competes with the next-nearest-neighbor exchange energy J'. We have found
that a metal-insulator transition occurs at a finite value of t/J'; (t/J')_C =
0.18 and the transition is of first order. In the insulating phase for small
t/J', there is an alternating charge ordering and the system behaves as a 1D
quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The metallic side belongs to the
universality class of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. The quantum phase
transition is an example of melting of the 1D quantum Heisenberg

Electrostatic boundary value problems in the Schwarzschild background
The electrostatic potential of any test charge distribution in Schwarzschild
space with boundary values is derived. We calculate the Green's function,
generalize the second Green's identity for p-forms and find the general
solution. Boundary value problems are solved. With a multipole expansion the
asymptotic property for the field of any charge distribution is derived. It is
shown that one produces a Reissner--Nordstrom black hole if one lowers a test
charge distribution slowly toward the horizon. The symmetry of the distribution
is not important. All the multipole moments fade away except the monopole. A
calculation of the gravitationally induced electrostatic self-force on a
pointlike test charge distribution held stationary outside the black hole is

Investigation of a Light Gas Helicon Plasma Source for the VASIMR Space Propulsion System
An efficient plasma source producing a high-density (approx.10(exp 19/cu m) light gas (e.g. H, D, or He) flowing plasma with a high degree of ionization is a critical component of the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR) concept. We are developing an antenna to apply ICRF power near the fundamental ion cyclotron resonance to further accelerate the plasma ions to velocities appropriate for space propulsion applications. The high degree of ionization and a low vacuum background pressure are important to eliminate the problem of radial losses due to charge exchange. We have performed parametric (e.g. gas flow, power (0.5 - 3 kW), magnetic field , frequency (25 and 50 MHz)) studies of a helicon operating with gas (H2 D2, He, N2 and Ar) injected at one end with a high magnetic mirror downstream of the antenna. We have explored operation with a cusp and a mirror field upstream. Plasma flows into a low background vacuum (<10(exp -4) torr) at velocities higher than the ion sound speed. High densities (approx. 10(exp 19/cu m) have been achieved at the location where ICRF will be applied, just downstream of the magnetic mirror
Effective action and motion of a cosmic string
We examine the leading order corrections to the Nambu effective action for
the motion of a cosmic string, which appear at fourth order in the ratio of the
width to radius of curvature of the string. We determine the numerical
coefficients of these extrinsic curvature corrections, and derive the equations
of motion of the worldsheet. Using these equations, we calculate the
corrections to the motion of a collapsing loop, a travelling wave, and a
helical breather. From the numerical coefficients we have calculated, we
discuss whether the string motion can be labelled as `rigid' or `antirigid,'
and hence whether cusp or kink formation might be suppressed or enhanced.Comment: 24 pages revtex, 12 figure
Cosmic Censorship, Area Theorem, and Self-Energy of Particles
The (zeroth-order) energy of a particle in the background of a black hole is
given by Carter's integrals. However, exact calculations of a particle's {\it
self-energy} (first-order corrections) are still beyond our present reach in
many situations. In this paper we use Hawking's area theorem in order to derive
bounds on the self-energy of a particle in the vicinity of a black hole.
Furthermore, we show that self-energy corrections {\it must} be taken into
account in order to guarantee the validity of Penrose cosmic censorship

Components of Antineutrino Emission in Nuclear Reactor
New scattering experiments aimed for sensitive searches of
the magnetic moment and projects to explore small mixing angle
oscillations at reactors call for a better understanding of the reactor
antineutrino spectrum. Here we consider six components, which contribute to the
total spectrum generated in nuclear reactor. They are: beta
decay of the fission fragments of U, Pu, U and
Pu, decay of beta-emitters produced as a result of neutron capture in
U and also due to neutron capture in accumulated fission fragments
which perturbs the spectrum. For antineutrino energies less than 3.5 MeV we
tabulate evolution of spectra corresponding to each of the four
fissile isotopes vs fuel irradiation time and their decay after the irradiation
is stopped and also estimate relevant uncertainties. Small corrections to the

Magnetic excitations and structural change in the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional magnet Sr_{14-x}Y_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41} (0<x<1)
Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on the S=1/2
quasi-one-dimensional system Sr_{14-x}Y_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}, which has both simple
chains and two-leg ladders of copper ions. We observed that when a small amount
of yttrium is substituted for strontium, which is expected to reduce the number
of holes, the dimerized state and the structure in the chain are changed
drastically. The inelastic peaks originating from the dimerized state of the
chain becomes broader in energy but not in momentum space. This implies that
the dimerized state becomes unstable but the spin correlations are unchanged
with yttrium substitution. Furthermore, it was observed that nuclear Bragg peak
intensities originating from the chain show strong temperature and x
dependence, which suggests that the chains slide along the c axis as

An Infrared Divergence Problem in the cosmological measure theory and the anthropic reasoning
An anthropic principle has made it possible to answer the difficult question
of why the observable value of cosmological constant (
GeV) is so disconcertingly tiny compared to predicted value of vacuum
energy density GeV. Unfortunately, there is a
darker side to this argument, as it consequently leads to another absurd
prediction: that the probability to observe the value for randomly
selected observer exactly equals to 1. We'll call this controversy an infrared
divergence problem. It is shown that the IRD prediction can be avoided with the
help of a Linde-Vanchurin {\em singular runaway measure} coupled with the
calculation of relative Bayesian probabilities by the means of the {\em
doomsday argument}. Moreover, it is shown that while the IRD problem occurs for
the {\em prediction stage} of value of , it disappears at the {\em
explanatory stage} when has already been measured by the observer.Comment: 9 pages, RevTe
Quasi-two-dimensional hole ordering and dimerized state in the CuO2-chain layers in Sr14Cu24O41
Neutron scattering experiments have been performed on
SrCuO which consists of both chains and ladders of copper
ions. We observed that the magnetic excitations from the CuO chain have two
branches and that both branches are weakly dispersive along the and
axes. The - dispersion relation as well as the intensities can be
reasonably described by a random phase approximation with intradimer coupling
between next-nearest-neighbor copper spins =11 meV, interdimer coupling
along the c axis =0.75 meV, and interdimer coupling along the a axis
=0.75 meV. The dimer configuration indicates a quasi-two-dimensional hole
ordering, resulting in an ordering of magnetic Cu with spin-1/2 and
nonmagnetic Cu, which forms the Zhang-Rice singlet. We have also studied the

Taqman Real-Time PCR Detects Avipoxvirus DNA in Blood of Hawaìi `Amakihi (Hemignathus virens)

Avipoxvirus sp. is a significant threat to endemic bird populations on several groups of islands worldwide, including Hawaìi, the Galapagos Islands, and the Canary Islands. Accurate identification and genotyping of Avipoxvirus is critical to the study of this disease and how it interacts with other pathogens, but currently available methods rely on invasive sampling of pox-like lesions and may be especially harmful in smaller birds.
Methodology/Principal Findings
Here, we present a nested TaqMan Real-Time PCR for the detection of the Avipoxvirus 4b core protein gene in archived blood samples from Hawaiian birds. The method was successful in amplifying Avipoxvirus DNA from packed blood cells of one of seven Hawaiian honeycreepers with confirmed Avipoxvirus infections and 13 of 28 Hawaìi `amakihi (Hemignathus virens) with suspected Avipoxvirus infections based on the presence of pox-like lesions. Mixed genotype infections have not previously been documented in Hawaìi but were observed in two individuals in this study.
Conclusions/Significance
