Two-Sided Derivatives for Regular Expressions and for Hairpin Expressions

The aim of this paper is to design the polynomial construction of a finite recognizer for hairpin completions of regular languages. This is achieved by considering completions as new expression operators and by applying derivation techniques to the associated extended expressions called hairpin expressions. More precisely, we extend partial derivation of regular expressions to two-sided partial derivation of hairpin expressions and we show how to deduce a recognizer for a hairpin expression from its two-sided derived term automaton, providing an alternative proof of the fact that hairpin completions of regular languages are linear context-free.Comment: 28 page

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Applied to the Ground State of the XY-Spin-Peierls System

We use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) to map out the ground state of a XY-spin chain coupled to dispersionless phonons of frequency ω% \omega . We confirm the existence of a critical spin-phonon coupling cω0.7% \alpha _c\propto \omega ^{0.7} for the onset of the spin gap bearing the signature of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We also observe a classical-quantum crossover when the spin-Peierls gap Δ\Delta is of order % \omega . In the classical regime, Δ>ω\Delta >\omega , the mean-field parameters are strongly renormalized by non-adiabatic corrections. This is the first application of the DMRG to phonons.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. To be published in PR

Amino-terminal cysteine residues of RGS16 are required for palmitoylation and modulation of G(i)- and G(q)-mediated signaling

RGS proteins (Regulators of G protein Signaling) are a recently discovered family of proteins that accelerate the GTPase activity of heterotrimeric G protein α subunits of the i, q, and 12 classes. The proteins share a homologous core domain but have divergent amino-terminal sequences that are the site of palmitoylation for RGS-GAIP and RGS4. We investigated the function of palmitoylation for RGS16, which shares conserved amino-terminal cysteines with RGS4 and RGS5. Mutation of cysteine residues at residues 2 and 12 blocked the incorporation of [3H]palmitate into RGS16 in metabolic labeling studies of transfected cells or into purified RGS proteins in a cell-free palmitoylation assay. The purified RGS16 proteins with the cysteine mutations were still able to act as GTPase-activating protein for Giα. Inhibition or a decrease in palmitoylation did not significantly change the amount of protein that was membrane-associated. However, palmitoylation-defective RGS16 mutants demonstrated impaired ability to inhibit both Gi- and Gq-linked signaling pathways when expressed in HEK293T cells. These findings suggest that the amino-terminal region of RGS16 may affect the affinity of these proteins for Gα subunits in vivo or that palmitoylation localizes the RGS protein in close proximity to Gα subunits on cellular membranes

Ground-state properties of the One-dimensional Kondo Lattice at partial Band-filling

We compute the magnetic structure factor, the singlet correlation function and the momentum distribution of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at the density ρ=0.7\rho =0.7. The density matrix-renormalization group method is used. We show that in the weak-coupling regime, the ground state is paramagnetic. We argue that a Luttinger liquid description of the model in this region is consistent with our calculations . In the strong-coupling regime, the ground state becomes ferromagnetic. The conduction electrons show a spinless-fermion like behavior.Comment: 8 pages, Latex, 5 figures included, to be published in PRB (Rapid Communications
