    Integration of multi-scale biosimulation models via light-weight semantics

    Currently, biosimulation researchers use a variety of computational environments and languages to model biological processes. Ideally, researchers should be able to semi- automatically merge models to more effectively build larger, multi-scale models. How- ever, current modeling methods do not capture the underlying semantics of these models sufficiently to support this type of model construction. In this paper, we both propose a general approach to solve this problem, and we provide a specific example that demon- strates the benefits of our methodology. In particular, we describe three biosimulation models: (1) a cardio-vascular fluid dynamics model, (2) a model of heart rate regulation via baroreceptor control, and (3) a sub-cellular-level model of the arteriolar smooth mus- cle. Within a light-weight ontological framework, we leverage reference ontologies to match concepts across models. The light-weight ontology then helps us combine our three models into a merged model that can answer questions beyond the scope of any single model

    The factors which place limits on the theoretical leading edge thrust are identified. An empirical method for the estimation of attainable thrust is presented. The method is based on the use of simple sweep theory to permit a two dimensional analysis, the use of theoretical airfoil programs to define thrust dependence on local geometric characteristics, and the examination of experimental two dimensional airfoil data to define limitations imposed by local Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers. Comparisons of theoretical and experimental aerodynamic characteristics for a series of wing body configurations are examined

    Dynamic stall modeling and correlation with experimental data on airfoils and rotors

    Two methods for modeling dynamic stall have been developed. The alpha, A, B method generates lift and pitching moments as functions of angle of attack and its first two time derivatives. The coefficients are derived from experimental data for oscillating airfoils. The Time Delay Method generates the coefficients from steady state airfoil characteristics and an associated time delay in stall beyond the steady state stall angle. Correlation with three types of test data shows that the alpha, A, B method is somewhat better for use in predicting helicopter rotor response in forward flight. Correlation with lift and moment hysteresis loops generated for oscillating airfoils was good for both models

    Local density of states of 1D Mott insulators and CDW states with a boundary

    We determine the local density of states (LDOS) of one-dimensional incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) states in the presence of a strong impurity potential, which is modeled by a boundary. We find that the CDW gets pinned at the impurity, which results in a singularity in the Fourier transform of the LDOS at momentum 2k_F. At energies above the spin gap we observe dispersing features associated with the spin and charge degrees of freedom respectively. In the presence of an impurity magnetic field we observe the formation of a bound state localized at the impurity. All of our results carry over to the case of one dimensional Mott insulators by exchanging the roles of spin and charge degrees of freedom. We discuss the implications of our result for scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on spin-gap systems such as two-leg ladder cuprates and 1D Mott insulators

    There is strong evidence of a stable “money demand” relationship for MZM and M2 through the 1990s. Though the M2 relationship breaks down somewhere around 1990, evidence has been accumulating that the disturbance is well characterized as a permanent upward shift in M2 velocity that began around 1990 and was largely over by 1994. This paper’s results support the hypothesis that households permanently reallocated a portion of their wealth from time deposits to mutual funds. This reallocation may have been induced by depository restructuring, but it could also be explained by appropriately measured opportunity cost.Demand for money

    Stick-Slip Motion and Phase Transition in a Block-Spring System

    We study numerically stick slip motions in a model of blocks and springs being pulled slowly. The sliding friction is assumed to change dynamically with a state variable. The transition from steady sliding to stick-slip is subcritical in a single block and spring system. However, we find that the transition is continuous in a long chain of blocks and springs. The size distribution of stick-slip motions exhibits a power law at the critical point.Comment: 8 figure

    Registered data sets were used to develop qualititative temperature and delta T maps of a band across north Florida and across south Florida for use with Carlson's boundary layer energy model balance model. Thermal inertia and moisture availability computations for north Florida are being used to investigate model sensitivity and to evaluate input parameters. Temperature differences of day-night HCMM overpasses clearly differentiate wetlands and uplands areas
