    Immunization of mice against Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection

    Mice were immunized with vaccines containing whole dry bacteria and adjuvant. They were challenged by the intravenous injection of living bacteria.     Particle number projection with effective forces

    The particle number projection method is formulated for density dependent forces and in particular for the finite range Gogny force. Detailed formula for the projected energy and its gradient are provided. The problems arising from the neglection of any exchange term, which may lead to divergences, are throughly discussed and the possible inaccuracies estimated. Numericala results for the projection after variation method are shown for the nucleus 164Er and for the projection before variation approach for the nuclei 48-50Cr.     Constraining the period of the ringed secondary companion to the young star J1407 with photographic plates

    Context. The 16 Myr old star 1SWASP J140747.93-394542.6 (V1400 Cen) underwent a series of complex eclipses in May 2007, interpreted as the transit of a giant Hill sphere filling debris ring system around a secondary companion, J1407b. No other eclipses have since been detected, although other measurements have constrained but not uniquely determined the orbital period of J1407b. Finding another eclipse towards J1407 will help determine the orbital period of the system, the geometry of the proposed ring system and enable planning of further observations to characterize the material within these putative rings. Aims. We carry out a search for other eclipses in photometric data of J1407 with the aim of constraining the orbital period of J1407b. Methods. We present photometry from archival photographic plates from the Harvard DASCH survey, and Bamberg and Sonneberg Observatories, in order to place additional constraints on the orbital period of J1407b by searching for other dimming and eclipse events. Using a visual inspection of all 387 plates and a period-folding algorithm we performed a search for other eclipses in these data sets. Results. We find no other deep eclipses in the data spanning from 1890 to 1990, nor in recent time-series photometry from 2012-2018. Conclusions. We rule out a large fraction of putative orbital periods for J1407b from 5 to 20 years. These limits are still marginally consistent with a large Hill sphere filling ring system surrounding a brown dwarf companion in a bound elliptical orbit about J1407. Issues with the stability of any rings combined with the lack of detection of another eclipse, suggests that J1407b may not be bound to J1407.Comment: 8 pages, 3 tables, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A.     Semiclassical Quantization of Effective String Theory and Regge Trajectories

    We begin with an effective string theory for long distance QCD, and evaluate the semiclassical expansion of this theory about a classical rotating string solution, taking into account the the dynamics of the boundary of the string. We show that, after renormalization, the zero point energy of the string fluctuations remains finite when the masses of the quarks on the ends of the string approach zero. The theory is then conformally invariant in any spacetime dimension D. For D=26 the energy spectrum of the rotating string formally coincides with that of the open string in classical Bosonic string theory. However, its physical origin is different. It is a semiclassical spectrum of an effective string theory valid only for large values of the angular momentum. For D=4, the first semiclassical correction adds the constant 1/12 to the classical Regge formula.Comment: 65 pages, revtex, 3 figures, added 2 reference

    Immune response of Merino sheep to inactivated Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis vaccine

    The brand of yeast extract used for medium production is critical for the cultivation of large numbers of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. The agglutination test was used to measure the antibody response which followed the inoculation of various inactivated C. pseudotubermlosis vaccines . The best results followed two subcutaneous injections of 5 ml vaccine prepared by inactivation with 0,5% formalin and standardized so that each dose contained a total of 0,025 ml packed cells. The addition of adjuvants to the vaccine had a negligible effect on the antibody response, but increasing the interval between the primary and secondary injections from 2 or 4 to 6 weeks resulted in a higher level of agglutinating antibodies. The antibody titres, however, returned to pre-immunization levels within 3 to 4 months. Freshly prepared vaccine was very toxic, apparently due to incomplete toxoiding of the exotoxin, but older vaccine was shown to be quite safe. A method was devised whereby chronic pulmonary abscesses could be established in experimental animals. Exposure of immunized sheep to artificial infection showed that they were well protected against subacute infection and death but that they were not able to restrict the development of abscesses effectively. The following are equivalent: 1. F is a universal Glivenko-Cantelli class. 2. N_{[]}(F,\epsilon,\mu)0 and every probability measure \mu. 3. F is totally bounded in L^1(\mu) for every probability measure \mu. 4. F does not contain a Boolean \sigma-independent sequence. It follows that universal Glivenko-Cantelli classes are uniformity classes for general sequences of almost surely convergent random measures.Comment: 26 page

    Birefringence of interferential mirrors at normal incidence Experimental and computational study

    In this paper we present a review of the existing data on interferential mirror birefringence. We also report new measurements of two sets of mirrors that confirm that mirror phase retardation per reflection decreases when mirror reflectivity increases. We finally developed a computational code to calculate the expected phase retardation per reflection as a function of the total number of layers constituting the mirror. Different cases have been studied and we have compared computational results with the trend of the experimental data. Our study indicates that the origin of the mirror intrinsic birefringence can be ascribed to the reflecting layers close to the substrate.Comment: To be published in Applied Physics

    Echinacea biotechnology: advances, commercialization and future considerations

    CONTEXT: Plants of the genus Echinacea (Asteraceae) are among the most popular herbal supplements on the market today. Recent studies indicate there are potential new applications and emerging markets for this natural health product (NHP).OBJECTIVE: This review aims to synthesize recent developments in Echinacea biotechnology and to identify promising applications for these advances in the industry.METHODS: A comprehensive survey of peer-reviewed publications was carried out, focusing on Echinacea biotechnology and impacts on phytochemistry. This article primarily covers research findings since 2007 and builds on earlier reviews on the biotechnology of Echinacea.RESULTS: Bioreactors, genetic engineering and controlled biotic or abiotic elicitation have the potential to significantly improve the yield, consistency and overall quality of Echinacea products. Using these technologies, a variety of new applications for Echinacea can be realized, such as the use of seed oil and antimicrobial and immune boosting feed additives for livestock.CONCLUSIONS: New applications can take advantage of the well-established popularity of Echinacea as a NHP. Echinacea presents a myriad of potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic and antibiotic activities that have yet to be fully translated into new applications. The distinct chemistry and bioactivity of different Echinacea species and organs, moreover, can lead to interesting and diverse commercial opportunities
