A Casa da Suplicação nos finais do Antigo Regime (1790-1810)

A Casa da Suplicação era o mais importante tribunal judicial da coroa portuguesa, com jurisdição, em última instância, sobre o reino e a totalidade dos territórios sob domínio português. Este texto analisa o tribunal na transição do século XVIII para o XIX, período que culminará na transferência da corte para o Brasil. Depois de um enquadramento institucional onde se analisa a organização interna do tribunal, o texto traça um perfil dos desembargadores que serviram a Casa da Suplicação entre 1790 e 1810, terminando com um estudo exploratório sobre o seu funcionamento, através de uma análise quantitativa da sua produção processual e uma distribuição geográfica da origem dos processos que subiam a este tribunal central

António Hespanha e as vésperas das humanidades digitais

Throughout his career as a historian, António Hespanha cultivated innovative methodological approaches with a permanent demand for acuity in the choice and exploitation of historical sources. A relevant part of his pioneering work is linked to the constant attention to what information technologies and digital tools could bring to the historiographical work, not only as analytical tools but also as powerful instruments for dissemination and accessibility, on a large scale, of data and critical work. This text, making a brief overview of António Hespanha’s work with strong investment in technological resources, seeks to demonstrate his pioneering role in the application and dissemination of what is now known as digital humanities.Ao longo do seu percurso como historiador, António Hespanha cultivou a inovação metodológica, colocada sempre a serviço de um enorme rigor com a escolha e a exploração das fontes. Parte muito relevante do pioneirismo do seu trabalho está ligada à permanente abertura ao que as tecnologias da informação e as ferramentas digitais poderiam trazer à historiografia, não apenas enquanto utensílios de trabalho analítico mas também como potentes instrumentos de divulgação e disponibilização, em larga escala, de dados e de trabalho crítico. Este texto, fazendo um breve conspecto do trabalho de António Hespanha com forte investimento nos meios tecnológicos, procura demonstrar o seu papel pioneiro na aplicação e divulgação do que hoje conhecemos como humanidades digitais

Familiaturas do Santo Ofício e juízes letrados nos domínios ultramarinos (Brasil, século XVIII)

The eighteenth century represents an increase in size and complexity of the judicial structure of the Portuguese crown in Brazil. Career opportunities flourish and there is a double movement of agents: on the one hand, judges who come from the kingdom; on the other, a growing number of Brazilian-born judges who start a career in Justice. Based on the data collected on the qualifications to be member of the Holy Office, this text isolates the learned judges that served in the Portuguese territories of America, trying to understand the role played by the familiatura in the progression of their career, and their possible inclusion in recruitment or appointment networks in the Coimbra-Lisbon axis. O século XVIII marca o crescimento e complexificação da estrutura judicial da Coroa portuguesa no Brasil. As oportunidades de carreira florescem e há um duplo movimento de agentes: por um lado, magistrados que vêm do reino; por outro, um crescente número de naturais da América portuguesa que ingressam na carreira das letras. Partindo dos dados recolhidos nas habilitações do Santo Ofício, este texto centra-se nos juízes letrados com serviço nos domínios portugueses da América, procurando compreender o papel desempenhado pela obtenção da familiatura na progressão da sua carreira e a sua eventual inserção em redes de recrutamento ou provimento no eixo Coimbra-Lisboa.

O aparelho judicial ultramarino português: O caso do Brasil (1620-1800)

Based on a prosopographical study of the magistrates at the service of the Portuguese crown, between 1620 and 1800, this article focuses on Brazil, incorporating its justice administration structures in the Portuguese judicial system working at an imperial scale. The role of the colonial service will be analyzed both in its capacity to reinforce local elites, as well as its condition of key stage in the Portuguese judicial career. Finally, the paper observes with more detail the Brazil-born magistrates who entered the judicial career in order to understand better how they were integrated in the system.Partindo de um estudo prosopográfico dos juízes letrados ao serviço da coroa portuguesa, entre 1620 e 1800, este artigo debruça-se sobre o Brasil, inserindo as suas estruturas de administração da justiça letrada num aparelho judicial português gerido à escala imperial. O papel do serviço na colónia será posto em perspectiva tanto na sua capacidade de fortalecimento de elites locais como na sua qualidade de etapa charneira para a progressão na carreira judicial portuguesa. Por fim, observa-se com mais detalhe os magistrados naturais da colónia que ingressaram na carreira judicial, para compreendermos melhor como foi feita a sua integração no aparelho
