Vacuum fluctuations of a scalar field near a reflecting boundary and their effects on the motion of a test particle

The contribution from quantum vacuum fluctuations of a real massless scalar field to the motion of a test particle that interacts with the field in the presence of a perfectly reflecting flat boundary is here investigated. There is no quantum induced dispersions on the motion of the particle when it is alone in the empty space. However, when a reflecting wall is introduced, dispersions occur with magnitude dependent on how fast the system evolves between the two scenarios. A possible way of implementing this process would be by means of an idealized sudden switching, for which the transition occurs instantaneously. Although the sudden process is a simple and mathematically convenient idealization it brings some divergences to the results, particularly at a time corresponding to a round trip of a light signal between the particle and the wall. It is shown that the use of smooth switching functions, besides regularizing such divergences, enables us to better understand the behavior of the quantum dispersions induced on the motion of the particle. Furthermore, the action of modifying the vacuum state of the system leads to a change in the particle energy that depends on how fast the transition between these states is implemented. Possible implications of these results to the similar case of an electric charge near a perfectly conducting wall are discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure

Wine grape cultivars adaptation and selection for tropical regions.

Wine production is a recent economical activity on tropical regions. In Brazil, tropical wines production started on Sub-Middle São Francisco River Valley Region in the early 1980 years. In the following years, other tropical countries such as Venezuela, Thailand and India have invested in the wine industry. All wine grape cultivars used in the tropical zones are introduced from the traditional temperate winegrowing regions. There are a small number of wine grape cultivars whose cultivation is consolidated in tropical environments, such as ?Syrah? and ?Chenin Blanc?, which possess good adaptation and present a great potential of wine quality. Wine grape cultivars evaluation and selection is one of the important priorities in order to diversify the quality wine production in the tropics. The environmental diversity of tropical zones in comparison with the original regions of wine grape cultivars, all of them from temperate climates, requires detailed evaluation and specific cultural practice adjustments to obtain convenient production from each cultivar and for each tropical environment. Climatic factors as winter absence, temperature changes and rain variations throughout the year change the physiological behavior of vines, offering different grapes and wine qualities at different seasons. In this paper are discussed questions inherent to the screening criteria and evaluation methodology to select wine grape cultivars to produce quality wines in tropical regions. Results obtained at the Sub-Middle São Francisco River Valley are presented.Trabalho apresentado no II International Symposium on Tropical Wines, de 25 a 28 de maio de 2010, Petrolina. Valorisation of macroalgae via the integration of hydrothermal carbonisation and anaerobic digestion

    Get PDF
This study investigates the integration of hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) with anaerobic digestion (AD) as a valorisation route for two macroalgae species; S. latissima (SL) and F. serratus (FS). HTC reactions were conducted at temperatures of 150°C, 200°C and 250°C, with resulting hydrochars, process waters and hydrothermal slurries assessed for biomethane potential yields. Un-treated SL generated similar biomethane levels compared to all SL slurries. Whereas all FS slurries improved biomethane yields compared to un-treated FS. Hydrochars represent a greater energy carrier if used as a solid fuel, rather than a feedstock for anaerobic digestion. Integrating HTC and AD, through hydrochar combustion and process water digestion has a greater energetic output than anaerobic digestion of the un-treated macroalgae. Treatment at 150°C, with separate utilisation of products, can improve the energetic output of S. latissima and F. serratus by 47 % and 172 % respectively, compared to digestion of the un-treated macroalgae

EXAMPLES OF ROCKS AND FAULT ROCKS IN THE COLOMBIAN ANDES

This work presents some case studies of fault zones and fault rocks associated in order to show the type of geologic information they may potentially reveal and contribute to the knowledge about the geologic history of a region. In igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Central and Western Cordilleras it is possible to suggest complex geologic histories characterized by multiple deformative phases of fragile and ductile origin. In areas dominated by sedimentary rocks the presence, not only of fault rocks but structures associated to fault zones allow interpreting kinematic and geometric elements which should be taken into account in field geologic mapping campaigns. Key words: Fault zones, fault rocks, Romeral Fault System, Colombian Andes.
