Group Approach to Quantization of Yang-Mills Theories: A Cohomological Origin of Mass
New clues for the best understanding of the nature of the symmetry-breaking
mechanism are revealed in this paper. A revision of the standard gauge
transformation properties of Yang-Mills fields, according to a group approach
to quantization scheme, enables the gauge group coordinates to acquire
dynamical content outside the null mass shell. The corresponding extra
(internal) field degrees of freedom are transferred to the vector potentials to
conform massive vector bosons.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX, no figures; final for
Intracellular ROS Protection Efficiency and Free Radical-Scavenging Activity of Curcumin
Curcumin has many pharmaceutical applications, many of which arise from its potent antioxidant properties. The present research examined the antioxidant activities of curcumin in polar solvents by a comparative study using ESR, reduction of ferric iron in aqueous medium and intracellular ROS/toxicity assays. ESR data indicated that the steric hindrance among adjacent big size groups within a galvinoxyl molecule limited the curcumin to scavenge galvinoxyl radicals effectively, while curcumin showed a powerful capacity for scavenging intracellular smaller oxidative molecules such as H2O2, HO•, ROO•. Cell viability and ROS assays demonstrated that curcumin was able to penetrate into the polar medium inside the cells and to protect them against the highly toxic and lethal effects of cumene hydroperoxide. Curcumin also showed good electron-transfer capability, with greater activity than trolox in aqueous solution. Curcumin can readily transfer electron or easily donate H-atom from two phenolic sites to scavenge free radicals. The excellent electron transfer capability of curcumin is because of its unique structure and different functional groups, including a β-diketone and several π electrons that have the capacity to conjugate between two phenyl rings. Therfore, since curcumin is inherently a lipophilic compound, because of its superb intracellular ROS scavenging activity, it can be used as an effective antioxidant for ROS protection within the polar cytoplasm
Evaluation of Guineagrass (\u3ci\u3ePanicum maximum\u3c/i\u3e Jacq) Hybrids in Brazil
Guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) is responsible for a high percentage of cattle finishing and milk production in Brazil, but presents problems of pasture degradability due to high soil fertility requirements and uneven production distribution. In order to search for new varieties to reduce these problems, over four hundred apomictic accessions of guineagrass and several sexual plants were introduced to Brazil in 1982. Agronomic evaluation took place at the National Beef Cattle Research Center of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa Beef Cattle), in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil. Breeding of the apomictic species began in 1990 using sexual x apomictic crosses. Three sexual plants and five apomictic accessions were used in the crosses. Seventy-nine hybrids were evaluated in small plots, for forage yield, regrowth after cuts, flowering and vigor during three years. The best families were identified for each characteristic evaluated. Multivariate analysis using principal components grouped the hybrids into six clusters according to their production. Due to superior performance, hybrids in groups 6 and 2 (22 hybrids) were indicated for future regional trials in small plot evaluations and grazing studies, aiming at releasing new cultivars for pasture diversification in Brazil
Higher-U(2,2)-spin fields and higher-dimensional W-gravities: quantum AdS space and radiation phenomena
A physical and geometrical interpretation of previously introduced tensor
operator algebras of U(2,2) in terms of algebras of higher-conformal-spin
quantum fields on the anti-de Sitter space AdS_5 is provided. These are
higher-dimensional W-like algebras and constitute a potential gauge guide
principle towards the formulation of induced conformal gravities
(Wess-Zumino-Witten-like models) in realistic dimensions. Some remarks on
quantum (Moyal) deformations are given and potentially tractable versions of
noncommutative AdS spaces are also sketched. The role of conformal symmetry in
the microscopic description of Unruh and Hawking's radiation effects is
discussed.Comment: LaTeX, 30 pages, 2 figures, final version to appear in Class. and

Business Group Internationalization: Choosing a Host Country According to Institutional Distance
Purpose – This research analyzes to what extent committing resources to the internationalization of family business groups is related to the institutional distance of the host country. Design/methodology/approach – We used OLS panel data with fixed effects. Findings – We identified that family business groups decide to internationalize themselves committing fewer resources to countries that present a positive institutional distance, and that are more institutionally developed than the country of origin. On the other hand, when family business groups choose to expand abroad committing more resources, they tend to invest in countries with a negative institutional distance, and that are less institutionally developed than the country of origin. Originality/value – Our main contribution to existing theory on internationalization of family business groups is to test the relationship between the level of resource commitment by family business groups in their international expansion and the institutional distance between the country of origin and the host country
Sampling Theorem and Discrete Fourier Transform on the Riemann Sphere
Using coherent-state techniques, we prove a sampling theorem for Majorana's
(holomorphic) functions on the Riemann sphere and we provide an exact
reconstruction formula as a convolution product of samples and a given
reconstruction kernel (a sinc-type function). We also discuss the effect of
over- and under-sampling. Sample points are roots of unity, a fact which allows
explicit inversion formulas for resolution and overlapping kernel operators
through the theory of Circulant Matrices and Rectangular Fourier Matrices. The
case of band-limited functions on the Riemann sphere, with spins up to , is
also considered. The connection with the standard Euler angle picture, in terms
of spherical harmonics, is established through a discrete Bargmann transform.Comment: 26 latex pages. Final version published in J. Fourier Anal. App
Selecting New \u3ci\u3eBrachiaria\u3c/i\u3e for Brazilian Pastures
Brazilian beef production relies heavily on cultivated pastures, of which about 80% are planted mainly to two Brachiaria cultivars. The narrowness of diversity associated with reproduction by apomixis of most plants in this genus prompted an intense search for new cultivars amongst recently collected and introduced ecotypes from Africa. This paper reports results for a three-year evaluation of 21 pre-selected ecotypes in two typical Cerrado ecosystems. Plots, replicated four times, were seeded in rows and cut every 6 weeks during the rainy season followed by a cut in the middle and one at the end of the dry season. Significant differences were found between ecotypes, seasons and years for total, leaf or leaf + stem dry matter production, percentage of leaves, leaf: stem ratio and regrowth rate. Ecotypes differed in the two ecosystems for percentage of leaves, leaf: stem ratio and regrowth. Superior ecotypes (BRA004308, 003361, 002844, 003204, 003441) could be identified and were equally advantageous in both ecosystems
Structure Constants for New Infinite-Dimensional Lie Algebras of U(N+,N-) Tensor Operators and Applications
The structure constants for Moyal brackets of an infinite basis of functions
on the algebraic manifolds M of pseudo-unitary groups U(N_+,N_-) are provided.
They generalize the Virasoro and W_\infty algebras to higher dimensions. The
connection with volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on M, higher generalized-spin
and tensor operator algebras of U(N_+,N_-) is discussed. These
centrally-extended, infinite-dimensional Lie-algebras provide also the arena
for non-linear integrable field theories in higher dimensions, residual gauge
symmetries of higher-extended objects in the light-cone gauge and C^*-algebras
for tractable non-commutative versions of symmetric curved spaces.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, no figures; minor comments added; to appear in J.
