Strengthening Farmers’ Bargaining Power in the New CAP

    Get PDF
The food supply chain plays a substantial role in the European economy. Agricultural markets are highly interdependent and competition at different stages of the supply chain matters for the overall functioning of the entire food sector. Welfare and distributional implications of competition at any stage of the food supply chain concern several ‘weak subjects’ such as small farmers and consumers who negotiate with “strong subjects” operating in more concentrated (industrial and retailing) sectors. In order to balance power across the EU agro-food supply chain and achieve a more sustainable distribution of value-added, the main instruments featuring the new paradigm of market organisation proposed by the CAP reform are Producer Organisation, Association Producer Organisation and Inter-Branch Organisation. We employ a simple bargaining model aimed to identify the determinants of the bargaining power in the food supply chain; the model is used to assess the capability of POs to strengthen farmers’ bargaining power. The results show that, under certain conditions, the joint selling and production planning can be effective tools for rebalancing power in the agro-food system. We also concluded that requiring a minimum size for POs may improve their effectiveness. Such requirement should be calibrated on the structure of the downstream (upstream) relevant market: more consolidated buyer (seller) industries call for larger POs

The Value of different Quality Clues in the Italian Olive Oil Market

This study focuses on high segments of the Italian olive oil market in order to assess the role and effectiveness of different quality clues in the creation of value. To meet this goal, the work relies on a hedonic price model where the price of a bottle of oil is regressed on different quality clues. The analysis covers about 1000 olive oils from Italian markets as reviewed by Slow Food guide, 2013 edition. Results indicate that the highest segments of the Italian olive oil market is increasingly sophisticated and follows the main tendencies established in the quality wine markets where many quality attributes are intensely active

Pass-through of unfair trading practices in EU food supply chains

This report presents the results of the research project “Pass-Through of Unfair Trading Practices in EU Food Supply Chains: Methodology and Empirical Application”. The purpose of the project is to design and test a monitoring system of unfair trading practices (UTP) along the agri-food supply chain. The investigation has special focus on assessment of the “pass-through effect”, defined as the consequences for the entire supply chain of UTPs adopted in a specific transaction. The report includes: (i) a review of the economic literature for a better understanding of the economic principles of UTPs; (ii) a review of available data sources and past experiences in UTP monitoring; (iii) the illustration of two alternative approaches for UTP monitoring: B-SEA (broad-scope empirical analysis) and IDEA (in-depth analysis); (iv) a test application of the two approaches to the EU fresh fruit sector; (v) a comparative analysis of the IDEA and B-SEA results and (vi) a discussion of the implications of our research.JRC.D.4-Economics of Agricultur

Met exon 14 skipping: A case study for the detection of genetic variants in cancer driver genes by deep learning

Background: Disruption of alternative splicing (AS) is frequently observed in cancer and might represent an important signature for tumor progression and therapy. Exon skipping (ES) represents one of the most frequent AS events, and in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) MET exon 14 skipping was shown to be targetable. Methods: We constructed neural networks (NN/CNN) specifically designed to detect MET exon 14 skipping events using RNAseq data. Furthermore, for discovery purposes we also developed a sparsely connected autoencoder to identify uncharacterized MET isoforms. Results: The neural networks had a Met exon 14 skipping detection rate greater than 94% when tested on a manually curated set of 690 TCGA bronchus and lung samples. When globally applied to 2605 TCGA samples, we observed that the majority of false positives was characterized by a blurry coverage of exon 14, but interestingly they share a common coverage peak in the second intron and we speculate that this event could be the transcription signature of a LINE1 (Long Interspersed Nuclear Element 1)-MET (Mesenchymal Epithelial Transition receptor tyrosine kinase) fusion. Conclusions: Taken together, our results indicate that neural networks can be an effective tool to provide a quick classification of pathological transcription events, and sparsely connected autoencoders could represent the basis for the development of an effective discovery tool

Price rigidity in food retail sector: the retailers’ strategy for pasta

In the Italian agro-food industry pasta represents a strategic product since Italy has the peculiarity of being, at the same time, the main producer and consumer of pasta. In the last years, Italian food retailing, as in all developed countries, has experienced some developments. This work, which represents a preliminary study on the Italian pasta market, focuses on how national and private label brands are positioned in the different segments of the Italian pasta markets. A way to reach such goal is to investigate on retail price and price promotions in Italy and 4 Italian macro-regional areas. The average prices show that at the national level different market segments exist with three national brands positioned at the highest level, following by an intermediate segment in which we find brand leader (Barilla) which competes with private label brands. The private labels products, which present a regular price lower than national brands, are sold without promotions. the frequency of price promotions concerns mainly the brands positioned in the higher market segment and the market leader. Finally, there is a moderate there is a relevant degree of heterogeneity in the results across the selected regional areas
