Vocational education in engineering in the information age
Learning new skills or acquiring new knowledge is becoming part of life for most adults. Indeed, the paradigm of life-long learning has found advocates not only in individuals but also policy-makers. In the information age, life-long learning will be increasingly dependent on the successful application of information and communication technology. This paper outlines recent curriculum developments of this department, highlighting information technology applications for course delivery and management. In catering for the changing needs of local industry, the department seeks to establish partnership with local companies, aiming to expand the departmentâs scope on life-long learning provision at the same time
A Damage Mechanics Approach to Fatigue Assessment in Offshore Structures
This article is intended to describe the development of a fatigue damage model capable of assessing fatigue damage in offshore structures. This is achieved by for mulating a set of damage coupled constitutive and evolution equations which make the for mulation of a unified approach possible under both low and high cycle fatigue damage and consistent with the structural dynamic response of the changing/deteriorating material be haviors. The structural analysis for the whole designed period, say about 30 years, can be carried out with the aid of the proposed analytical procedure, in which the fundamental characteristics of sea wave statistics responsible for the structural dynamic response can be sufficiently considered. An offshore structure subject to complex ocean environment is described by a general stochastic system which embeds a group of stochastic subsystems, each characterizing a duty cycle. An effective analytical method is established by introduc ing the concept of duty strain range with a clear mathematical definition and its analytical solution which covers all possible spectral parameters. The history-dependent damage is also included in the damage model so that the overload effects can be analyzed. Wave Mechanics of Two Hard Core Quantum Particles in 1-D Box
The wave mechanics of two impenetrable hard core particles in 1-D box is
analyzed. Each particle in the box behaves like an independent entity
represented by a {\it macro-orbital} (a kind of pair waveform). While the
expectation value of their interaction, ,
satisfies (or , with being the size
of the box). The particles in their ground state define a close-packed
arrangement of their wave packets (with , phase position
separation and momentum ) and experience a
mutual repulsive force ({\it zero point repulsion}) which
also tries to expand the box. While the relative dynamics of two particles in
their excited states represents usual collisional motion, the same in their
ground state becomes collisionless. These results have great significance in
determining the correct microscopic understanding of widely different many body

Aetiology of allergic rhinitis in Hong Kong
ABSTRACTIn a 1993 survey, allergic rhinitis was identified as the most common allergic disease in Hong Kong, affecting 29.1% of schoolchildren. Recently (1995), the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) also reported 44.5% current rhinitis among Hong Kong teenagers. Our objective was to study the aetiology of allergic rhinitis in Hong Kong using serological tests of allergen sensitization. In 57 allergic rhinitis patients and in the same number of age- and sex-matched controls the following were measured: serum total IgE, mixed aeroallergen IgE (Phadiatopâą) and specific IgE versus house dust mite (HDM), cockroach, cat and dog dander, mould mixture (Penicillium, Cladosporium, Aspergillus and Alternaria species) and four local pollens (Bermuda grass, Timothy, ragweed and mugwort). Compared with controls, allergic rhinitis patients (26 males, 31 females; mean (± SD) age 25 ±11 years) had a significantly elevated serum total IgE concentration (mean ± SEM: 496 ± 88 vs 179 ± 38 kU/L) and an increased proportion of positive Phadiatop (95 vs 33%) and specific IgE tests versus HDM (90 vs 44%) and cockroach (42 vs 9%; Mann-Whitney U-test and Ï2 tests all P < 0.005). There was no significant difference in sensitization to other allergens tested. House dust mite and cockroach are ubiquitous in Hong Kong with a warm, humid climate and crowded living conditions. Their identification as aetiological agents of allergic rhinitis should help in the development of environmental strategies for reducing the inhalant allergen load to prevent and control this prevalent and costly health problem in our community
Group-regularized individual prediction: Theory and application to pain
Multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) has become an important tool for identifying brain representations of psychological processes and clinical outcomes using fMRI and related methods. Such methods can be used to predict or âdecodeâ psychological states in individual subjects. Single-subject MVPA approaches, however, are limited by the amount and quality of individual-subject data. In spite of higher spatial resolution, predictive accuracy from single-subject data often does not exceed what can be accomplished using coarser, group-level maps, because single-subject patterns are trained on limited amounts of often-noisy data. Here, we present a method that combines population-level priors, in the form of biomarker patterns developed on prior samples, with single-subject MVPA maps to improve single-subject prediction. Theoretical results and simulations motivate a weighting based on the relative variances of biomarker-based predictionâbased on population-level predictive maps from prior groupsâand individual-subject, cross-validated prediction. Empirical results predicting pain using brain activity on a trial-by-trial basis (single-trial prediction) across 6 studies (NÂ =Â 180 participants) confirm the theoretical predictions. Regularization based on a population-level biomarkerâin this case, the Neurologic Pain Signature (NPS)âimproved single-subject prediction accuracy compared with idiographic maps based on the individuals' data alone. The regularization scheme that we propose, which we term group-regularized individual prediction (GRIP), can be applied broadly to within-person MVPA-based prediction. Effect of Weld Schedule on the Residual Stress Distribution of Boron Steel Spot Welds
Press-hardened boron steel has been utilized in anti-intrusion systems in automobiles, providing high strength and weight-saving potential through gage reduction. Boron steel spot welds exhibit a soft heat-affected zone which is surrounded by a hard nugget and outlying base material. This soft zone reduces the strength of the weld and makes it susceptible to failure. Additionally, different welding regimes lead to significantly different hardness distributions, making failure prediction difficult. Boron steel sheets, welded with fixed and adaptive schedules, were characterized. These are the first experimentally determined residual stress distributions for boron steel resistance spot welds which have been reported. Residual strains were measured using neutron diffraction, and the hardness distributions were measured on the same welds. Additionally, similar measurements were performed on spot welded DP600 steel as a reference material. A correspondence between residual stress and hardness profiles was observed for all welds. A significant difference in material properties was observed between the fixed schedule and adaptively welded boron steel samples, which could potentially lead to a difference in failure loads between the two boron steel welds
Recommendations for Epstein-Barr virusâbased screening for nasopharyngeal cancer in high- and intermediate-risk regions
A meeting of experts was held in November 2021 to review and discuss available data on performance of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)âbased approaches to screen for early stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and methods for the investigation and management of screen-positive individuals. Serum EBV antibody and plasma EBV DNA testing methods were considered. Both approaches were found to have favorable performance characteristics and to be cost-effective in high-risk populations. In addition to endoscopy, use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate screen-positive individuals was found to increase the sensitivity of NPC detection with minimal impact on cost-effectiveness of the screening program
Physical Frailty: ICFSR International Clinical Practice Guidelines for Identification and Management
Objective: The task force of the International Conference of Frailty and Sarcopenia Research (ICFSR) developed these clinical practice guidelines to overview the current evidence-base and to provide recommendations for the identification and management of frailty in older adults. Methods: These recommendations were formed using the GRADE approach, which ranked the strength and certainty (quality) of the supporting evidence behind each recommendation. Where the evidence-base was limited or of low quality, Consensus Based Recommendations (CBRs) were formulated. The recommendations focus on the clinical and practical aspects of care for older people with frailty, and promote person-centred care. Recommendations for Screening and Assessment: The task force recommends that health practitioners case identify/screen all older adults for frailty using a validated instrument suitable for the specific setting or context (strong recommendation). Ideally, the screening instrument should exclude disability as part of the screening process. For individuals screened as positive for frailty, a more comprehensive clinical assessment should be performed to identify signs and underlying mechanisms of frailty (strong recommendation). Recommendations for Management: A comprehensive care plan for frailty should address polypharmacy (whether rational or nonrational), the management of sarcopenia, the treatable causes of weight loss, and the causes of exhaustion (depression, anaemia, hypotension, hypothyroidism, and B12 deficiency) (strong recommendation). All persons with frailty should receive social support as needed to address unmet needs and encourage adherence to a comprehensive care plan (strong recommendation). First-line therapy for the management of frailty should include a multicomponent physical activity programme with a resistance-based training component (strong recommendation). Protein/caloric supplementation is recommended when weight loss or undernutrition are present (conditional recommendation). No recommendation was given for systematic additional therapies such as cognitive therapy, problem-solving therapy, vitamin D supplementation, and hormone-based treatment.
