Novel approach to automated fingerprint recognition

    No full text
The paper describes an enhanced fingerprint recognition system consisting of image preprocessing, feature extraction and matching that runs accurately and effectively on a personal computer platform. The image preprocessing includes histogram equalisation, modification of directional codes, dynamic thresholding and ridgeline thinning which are sufficient to enhance the image to a state ready for feature extraction. Only features extracted are stored in a file for fingerprint matching. The matching algorithm presented is a modification and improvement of the structural approach. Experimental results acquired for matching are accurate, reliable and fast for implementation using a PC and a fingerprint scanner. The proposed fingerprint recognition scheme can provide an efficient way of automated identification and can be extended to numerous other security or administration applications

Interfacing reprogrammable universal remote controller with multimedia PC

The paper describes the design and implementation of a low-cost electronic circuit which can be incorporated into a universal remote controller that is used to control electronic appliances such as televisions, video cassette recorders and audio systems. In an educational or a conference environment, the circuit can be used to facilitate computer-assisted presentations by acting as an interface between the universal remote controller and a personal computer (PC) so that multimedia database applications can be developed on a PC to retrieve desired video clips on a video cassette tape and play them on a TV via the universal remote controller

    PC-controlled scent system

The paper describes an electromechanical system that is controlled .by a multimedia PC to press a chosen small bottle to emit scent. The scent may be from perfumes, fruits, flowers, etc., and will be related to the text information, pictures, audio and video clips presented on the PC. A user selects a scent for testing from a given set of database through a user-friendly PC-controlled window-based interface. The whole system is like an electronic information kiosk or educational kit, except that it can now provide this extra sensory information
