    Simultaneous Improvement in the Strength and Formability of Commercially Pure Titanium via Twinning-induced Crystallographic Texture Control

    The rolling texture formed in the conventional cold rolling process of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) for producing a metal sheet significantly limits the potential applications of CP-Ti sheets in various industrial sectors by impairing the formability. Here, we report that by exploiting a twinning-induced crystallographic texture modification, the rolling texture can be weakened and dispersed effectively, leading to a simultaneous improvement in the formability and yield strength. A two-stage cold rolling process was designed with intermediate annealing at a late stage of the conventional cold rolling process to generate deformation twins. The intermediate annealing drove the activation of {11 (2) over bar2} twin and {11 (2) over bar2}-{10 (1) over bar2} double twin in the second stage of the rolling process by removing the internal reaction stress developed in the first stage of the rolling process through recrystallization, and the crystallographic feature of the {1122} twinned region, i.e., {11 (2) over bar2} twin texture, was effective for type slips and {10 (1) over bar2} twinning to accommodate a through-thickness strain as well as for reducing the planar anisotropy. This enhanced thinning capability and reduced planar anisotropy in the {11 (2) over bar2} twin texture led to an improvement of the formability. It was observed to nest in late December at Bimini, Bahamas. The black mouth functions as a warning mechanism, and under low albedo conditions, as at Bimini, the dark coloration is indicated to be of social significance. Attention is called to unidentified samples of Opsanus from Little Bahama Bank and the Gulf of Campeche. The ranges and recognition characters of O. pardus, O. tau, O. beta, and O. barbatus are discussed. Opsanus vandeuseni Fowler is referred to the synonymy of Opsanus beta (Goode and Bean). Opsanus hildebrandi Breder is placed in Marcgravia Jordan and appears not to be identical with M. ctyptocentra (Cuvier and Valenciennes). The low numbers of dorsal and anal rays attributed to Opsanus in the literature are valid if the Queensland genus Batrachoemus Ogilby is considered identical with Opsanus. Published paleotemperature measurements indicate that the 'tropical' Atlantic and Caribbean regions were not tropical during the last glacial period. The trans-Florida faunal province, now absent from southern Florida, was continuous around the southern tip of the Florida land mass; at the same time coral reefs were absent from most of the West Indies, and the shore fauna was predominantly temperate in the north and predominantly subtropical in the south. It is improbable that the Florida peninsula neck was submerged during Pleistocene interglacial periods. The presence of marine fishes in Florida fresh waters is not considered significant from the standpoint of historical zoogeography, and it is suggested that the elevated chlorinities in Florida fresh waters are maintained by current processes. Even if the neck of the Florida peninsula had been drowned, the Gulf of Mexico populations of trans-Florida fishes probably could not utilize the passage, as the temperatures would have been too high. The Gulf of Mexico disjunct trans-Florida populations are interpreted as glacial rather than interglacial relicts, and a comparison is drawn between the Gulf of Mexico and the Sea of Okhotsk. Because the spawning threshold temperature of Opsanus parallels the minimal thermal tolerance of reef corals, Opsanus is considered to be an 'indicator' of temperate coastal waters. Owing to thermal requirements and tolerances, Opsanus survives as a glacial relict in a few West Indian localities. During the last glacial period, the northern distributional limit for Opsanus may have been as far south as southern Florida. Opsanus, lacking pelagic life-history stages, could have dispersed through the West Indies by passive transport during storms"--P. 20-21

    The rare top quark decays tcVt\to cV in the topcolor-assisted technicolor model

    We consider the rare top quark decays in the framework of topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) model. We find that the contributions of top-pions and top-Higgs predicted by the TC2 model can enhance the SM branching ratios by as much as 6-9 orders of magnitude. i.e., in the most case, the orders of magnitude of branching ratios are Br(tcg)105Br(t\to c g)\sim 10^{-5}, Br(tcZ)105Br(t\to c Z)\sim 10^{-5}, Br(tcγ)107Br(t\to c \gamma)\sim 10^{-7}. With the reasonable values of the parameters in TC2 model, such rare top quark decays may be testable in the future experiments. So, rare top quark decays provide us a unique way to test TC2 model.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    A study of semi-inclusive charmless BπXB \to \pi X decays

    We study semi-inclusive charmless decays BπXB \to \pi X in detail, such as Bˉ0π±(0)X\bar B^0 \to \pi^{\pm (0)} X, B0π±(0)XB^0 \to \pi^{\pm (0)} X, B±π±(0)XB^{\pm} \to \pi^{\pm (0)} X, where XX does not contain a charm (anti)quark. We find that the process Bˉ0πX\bar B^0 \to \pi^- X (B0π+XB^0 \to \pi^+ X) can be particularly useful for determination of the CKM matrix element Vub|V_{ub}|. We calculate and present the branching ratio (BR) of Bˉ0πX\bar B^0 \to \pi^- X as a function of Vub|V_{ub}|, with an estimate of possible uncertainties. It is expected that the BR is an order of 10410^{-4}. Our estimation indicates that one can phenomenologically determine Vub|V_{ub}| with reasonable accuracy by measuring the BR of Bˉ0πX\bar B^0 \to \pi^- X (B0π+XB^0 \to \pi^+ X).Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures; Revtex; version accepted for publication in Eur.     Higgs-Boson Production Associated with a Single Bottom Quark in Supersymmetric QCD

    Due to the enhancement of the couplings between Higgs boson and bottom quarks in the minimal sypersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the cross section of the process pp(p\bar{p}) \to h^0b(h^0\bar{b})+X at hadron colliders can be considerably enhanced. We investigated the production of Higgs boson associated with a single high-p_T bottom quark via subprocess bg(\bar{b}g) \to h^0b(h^0\bar{b}) at hadron colliders including the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in MSSM. We find that the NLO QCD correction in the MSSM reaches 50%-70% at the LHC and 60%-85% at the Fermilab Tevatron in our chosen parameter space.Comment: accepted by Phys. Rev.

    R-parity violation effect on the top-quark pair production at linear colliders

    We investigate in detail the effects of the R-parity lepton number violation in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) on the top-quark pair production via both ee+e^--e^+ and γγ\gamma-\gamma collision modes at the linear colliders. We find that with the present experimental constrained /R\rlap/{R} parameters, the effect from /R\rlap/{R} interactions on the processes e+ettˉe^+e^-\to t\bar{t} and e+eγγttˉe^+e^- \to \gamma\gamma \to t\bar{t} could be significant and may reach -30% and several percent, respectively. Our results show that the /R\rlap/{R} effects are sensitive to the c.m.s. energy and the relevant /R\rlap/{R} parameters. However, they are not sensitive to squark and slepton masses when mq~400GeVm_{\tilde{q}} \geq 400 GeV (or ml~300GeVm_{\tilde{l}} \geq 300 GeV) and are almost independent on the tanβ\tan\betaComment: Accepted by Phys.Rev.

    Isometric Immersions and Compensated Compactness

    A fundamental problem in differential geometry is to characterize intrinsic metrics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold M2{\mathcal M}^2 which can be realized as isometric immersions into R3\R^3. This problem can be formulated as initial and/or boundary value problems for a system of nonlinear partial differential equations of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type whose mathematical theory is largely incomplete. In this paper, we develop a general approach, which combines a fluid dynamic formulation of balance laws for the Gauss-Codazzi system with a compensated compactness framework, to deal with the initial and/or boundary value problems for isometric immersions in R3\R^3. The compensated compactness framework formed here is a natural formulation to ensure the weak continuity of the Gauss-Codazzi system for approximate solutions, which yields the isometric realization of two-dimensional surfaces in R3\R^3. As a first application of this approach, we study the isometric immersion problem for two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with strictly negative Gauss curvature. We prove that there exists a C1,1C^{1,1} isometric immersion of the two-dimensional manifold in R3\R^3 satisfying our prescribed initial conditions. TComment: 25 pages, 6 figue

    Pseudoscalar Higgs boson production associated with a single bottom quark at hadron colliders

    We compute the complete next-to-leading order (NLO) SUSY-QCD corrections for the associated production of a pseudoscalar Higgs boson with a bottom quark via bottom-gluon fusion at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Fermilab Tevatron. We find that the NLO QCD correction in the MSSM reaches 4040%\sim50% at the LHC and 4545%\sim80% at the Tevatron in our chosen parameter space
