    Distribution and abundance of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) and Peary caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi) on Graham, Buckingham, and southern Ellesmere islands, March 2015

    We flew a survey of southern Ellesmere Island, Graham Island, and Buckingham Island in March 2015 to obtain estimates of abundance for muskoxen and Peary caribou. Generally, muskoxen were abundant north of the Sydkap Ice Cap along Baumann Fiord, north of Goose Fiord, west and north of Muskox Fiord, and on the coastal plains and river valleys east of Vendom Fiord. Although few, they were also present on Bjorne Peninsula and the south coast between the Sydkap Ice Cap and Jakeman Glacier. We observed a total of 1146 muskoxen. Calves (approximately 10-months old) made up 22% of the observed animals. The population estimate was 3200 ± 602 SE (standard error) muskoxen, the highest muskox population size ever estimated for southern Ellesmere, Graham and Buckingham islands. This could be because previous efforts typically surveyed only a portion of our area or focused elsewhere, or the results were provided only as minimum counts rather than estimates of abundance. Regardless, our results indicate that the muskox population has recovered from low levels in 2005 of 312-670 (95% confidence interval [CI]) individuals. Peary caribou abundance appears to be low.  We only saw 38 Peary caribou during our 2015 survey. This confounds appraisal of possible abundance change since 2005, when 109-442 caribou (95% CI) were estimated to inhabit the same surveyed area. We estimated 183 ± 128 SE Peary caribou, and suggest that their numbers are likely stable at low density on southern Ellesmere Island

    Understanding high-Tc cuprates based on the phase string theory of doped antiferromagnet

    We present a self-consistent RVB theory which unifies the metallic (superconducting) phase with the half-filling antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. Two crucial factors in this theory include the RVB condensation which controls short-range AF spin correlations and the phase string effect introduced by hole hopping as a key doping effect. We discuss both the uniform and non-uniform mean-field solutions and show the unique features of the characteristic spin energy scale, superconducting transition temperature, and the phase diagram, which are all consistent with the experimental measurements of high-TcT_c cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 embeded eps figures, minor typos are corrected, to appear in the proceedings of M2S-HTSC-VI conferenc

    We consider projected wavefunctions for the 2D t−Jt-J model. For various wavefunctions, including correlated Fermi-liquid and Luttinger-type wavefunctions we present the static charge-charge and spin-spin structure factors.     Luttinger Liquid Instability in the One Dimensional t-J Model

    We study the t-J model in one dimension by numerically projecting the true ground state from a Luttinger liquid trial wave function. We find the model exhibits Luttinger liquid behavior for most of the phase diagram in which interaction strength and density are varied. However at small densities and high interaction strengths a new phase with a gap to spin excitations and enhanced superconducting correlations is found.     State-selective imaging of cold atoms

    Atomic coherence phenomena are usually investigated using single beam techniques without spatial resolution. Here we demonstrate state-selective imaging of cold 85Rb atoms in a three-level ladder system, where the atomic refractive index is sensitive to the quantum coherence state of the atoms. We use a phase-sensitive diffraction contrast imaging (DCI) technique which depends on the complex refractive index of the atom cloud. A semiclassical model allows us to analytically calculate the detuning-dependent refractive index of the system. The predicted Autler-Townes splitting and our experimental measurements are in excellent agreement. DCI provided a quantitative image of the distribution of the excited-state fraction, and compared with on-resonance absorption and blue cascade fluorescence techniques, was found to be experimentally simple and robust

    Conductance of tubular nanowires with disorder

    We calculate the conductance of tubular-shaped nanowires having many potential scatterers at random positions. Our approach is based on the scattering matrix formalism and our results analyzed within the scaling theory of disordered conductors. When increasing the energy the conductance for a big enough number of impurities in the tube manifests a systematic evolution from the localized to the metallic regimes. Nevertheless, a conspicuous drop in conductance is predicted whenever a new transverse channel is open. Comparison with the semiclassical calculation leading to purely ohmic behavior is made.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    The breakdown of the Nagaoka phase in the 2D t-J model

    In the limit of weak exchange, J, at low hole concentration, the ground state of the 2D t-J model is believed to be ferromagnetic. We study the leading instability of this Nagaoka state, which emerges with increasing J. Both exact diagonalization of small clusters, and a semiclassical analytical calculation of larger systems show that above a certain critical value of the exchange, Nagaoka's state is unstable to phase separation. In a finite-size system a bubble of antiferromagnetic Mott insulator appears in the ground state above this threshold.     Variational state based on the Bethe ansatz solution and a correlated singlet liquid state in the one-dimensional t-J model

    The one-dimensional t-J model is investigated by the variational Monte Carlo method. A variational wave function based on the Bethe ansatz solution is newly proposed, where the spin-charge separation is realized, and a long-range correlation factor of Jastrow-type is included. In most regions of the phase diagram, this wave function provides an excellent description of the ground-state properties characterized as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid; Both of the amplitude and exponent of correlation functions are correctly reproduced. For the spin-gap phase, another trial state of correlated singlet pairs with a Jastrow factor is introduced. This wave function shows generalized Luther-Emery liquid behavior, exhibiting enhanced superconducting correlations and exponential decay of the spin correlation function. Using these two variational wave functions, the whole phase diagram is determined.     Fractionalization, topological order, and cuprate superconductivity

    This paper is concerned with the idea that the electron is fractionalized in the cuprate high-TcT_c materials. We show how the notion of topological order may be used to develop a precise theoretical characterization of a fractionalized phase in spatial dimension higher than one. Apart from the fractional particles into which the electron breaks apart, there are non-trivial gapped topological excitations - dubbed "visons". A cylindrical sample that is fractionalized exhibits two disconnected topological sectors depending on whether a vison is trapped in the "hole" or not. Indeed, "vison expulsion" is to fractionalization what the Meissner effect ("flux expulsion") is to superconductivity. This understanding enables us to address a number of conceptual issues that need to be confronted by any theory of the cuprates based on fractionalization ideas. We argue that whether or not the electron fractionalizes in the cuprates is a sharp and well-posed question with a definite answer. We elaborate on our recent proposal for an experiment to unambiguously settle this issue.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    Low maternal vitamin B12 status is associated with lower cord blood HDL cholesterol in white Caucasians living in the UK

    Background and Aims: Studies in South Asian population show that low maternal vitamin B12 associates with insulin resistance and small for gestational age in the offspring. Low vitamin B12 status is attributed to vegetarianism in these populations. It is not known whether low B12 status is associated with metabolic risk of the offspring in whites, where the childhood metabolic disorders are increasing rapidly. Here, we studied whether maternal B12 levels associate with metabolic risk of the offspring at birth. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of 91 mother-infant pairs (n = 182), of white Caucasian origin living in the UK. Blood samples were collected from white pregnant women at delivery and their newborns (cord blood). Serum vitamin B12, folate, homocysteine as well as the relevant metabolic risk factors were measured. Results: The prevalence of low serum vitamin B12 (<191 ng/L) and folate (<4.6 μg/L) were 40% and 11%, respectively. Maternal B12 was inversely associated with offspring’s Homeostasis Model Assessment 2-Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), triglycerides, homocysteine and positively with HDL-cholesterol after adjusting for age and BMI. In regression analysis, after adjusting for likely confounders, maternal B12 is independently associated with neonatal HDL-cholesterol and homocysteine but not triglycerides or HOMA-IR. Conclusions: Our study shows that low B12 status is common in white women and is independently associated with adverse cord blood cholesterol
