    Combustion characteristics of oxymethylene dimethyl ether-diesel blends:An experimental investigation using a constant-volume combustion chamber

    The combustion characteristics of oxymethylene dimethyl ether (OMEx) and its blends with diesel have been investigated using a multi-hole injector in a constant-volume combustion chamber. The results show OMEx addition can reduce the ignition delay, especially when blends of more than 50 vol% are used, at low chamber temperature. Two individual heat-release peaks are observed for OMEx during premixed combustion at 750 K, due to a pronounced low-temperature heat-release phase. The chamber temperature of 800 K can be regarded as a transition point for the behavior of burn duration as well as maximum ROHR peak, mostly caused by combustion regime transition from premixed- to diffusion combustion. It appears that there is an approximate linear relation between maximum ROHR peak and the time at which this peak occurs with injection pressure. The ignition delay of OMEx is almost insensitive to a decrease in ambient oxygen concentration. And the premixed ROHR profile, due to its high oxygen content, is very similar and only ignition delay and burn duration increase slightly. Additionally, comparisons of natural luminosity results for OMEx and diesel indicate that OMEx produces near-zero soot values. Luminosity is expected to be caused by chemiluminescence alone, which increases with injection pressure

    Ensuring HLA-matched platelet support requires an ethnic diverse donor population

    BACKGROUND: Patients refractory for platelet transfusions benefit from human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched platelet transfusions. Differences in ethnic background of patients and donors could hamper the availability of sufficient numbers of HLA-matched donors for all patients. We evaluated our HLA-matched donor program and explored the role of ethnic background of patients related to the number of available donors. METHODS: We performed a cohort study among consecutive patients who received HLA-matched platelet concentrates in the Netherlands between 1994 and 2017. The number of available matched donors was determined per patient. Haplotypes were constructed from genotypes with computer software (PyPop). Based on haplotypes, HaploStats, an algorithm from the National Marrow Donor Program, was used to assess the most likely ethnic background for patients with 5 or fewer and 30 or more donors. RESULTS: HLA typing was available for 19,478 donors in September 2017. A total of 1206 patients received 12,350 HLA-matched transfusions. A median of 83 (interquartile range, 18-266) donors were available per patient. For 95 (10.3%) patients, 5 or fewer donors were available. These patients were more likely to have an African American background, whereas patients with 30 or more donors were more often from Caucasian origin, compared with Caucasian origin for patients with 30 donors. CONCLUSION: Adequate transfusion support could be guaranteed for most but not all refractory patients. More non-Caucasian donors are required to ensure the availability of HLA-matched donors for all patients in the Netherlands

    TRY plant trait database – enhanced coverage and open access

    Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait‐based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives

    Ignition and Combustion Characteristics of N-Butanol and FPBO/N-Butanol Blends With Addition of Ignition Improver

    In this study, the ignition and combustion characteristics of fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO) are investigated in a combustion research unit (CRU), which mainly consists of a constant-volume combustion chamber. To fuel the CRU with FPBO, n-butanol and 2-ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) are used to improve the atomization and ignition properties of the fuel blends, respectively. In the first part of this study, an appropriate proportion of EHN additive into n-butanol is determined based on the balance between the ignition improvement and the amount of EHN addition. Then, the effects of FPBO content (up to 30%) in FPBO/n-butanol blends with the same EHN addition are investigated. The effects of chamber wall temperature on the combustion are also studied. Finally, the different definitions of indicators are determined from the chamber pressure traces to quantitatively depict fuel ignition and combustion characteristics including ignition delay, combustion phasing, end of combustion and burn duration. Experimental results show that a distinct two-stage ignition process can be observed for all cases. For n-butanol with added EHN, the increase of EHN proportion could effectively advance both the low- and high-temperature reaction phases. However, this gain is obviously reduced when the percentage of EHN becomes higher than 8%. For FPBO/n-butanol blends with an addition of EHN, higher FPBO proportions have little effect on the low-temperature reaction phase, while they delay the high-temperature reaction phase. Chamber wall temperature have a significant influence on the ignition and combustion processes of the tested FPBO/n-butanol blends. With these blends, negative temperature coefficient behavior was observed in a chamber wall temperature range of 535–565°C

    BACKGROUND Recipients of platelet transfusions with 1-hour corrected count increments (1hCCIs) of 7.5 or less on two subsequent platelet transfusions with random platelets may benefit from human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched platelet concentrates. We aimed to quantify the efficacy of HLA-matched platelets concentrates expressed in 1hCCIs. METHODS We performed a cohort study among consecutive refractory patients who received HLA-matched platelet concentrates in the Netherlands between 1994 and 2017. We performed mixed-model linear regression comparing 1hCCIs after HLA split-antigen-matched transfusions with 1hCCIs after HLA-mismatched transfusions, adjusted for within-patient correlations. A donor-to-patient match was categorized as a split-match if all donor HLA-A and -B antigens were present in the patient as well; that is, donor and patient were HLA identical or compatible. Subgroup analyses were performed for patients with positive or negative HLA antibody screens. Finally, the additional effect of ABO mismatches on 1hCCIs was investigated. RESULTS The 1hCCI after an HLA-matched transfusion was 14.09 (95% reference interval, 1.13-29.89). This was 1.94 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.74-3.15) higher than 1hCCI after HLA-mismatched transfusions. In patients with negative HLA antibody screening tests, HLA matching did not affect 1hCCIs. Conditional on HLA matching, 1hCCIs decreased by 3.70 (95% CI, -5.22 to -2.18) with major ABO mismatches. CONCLUSION Matched platelet concentrates yielded maximal 1hCCIs, whereas mismatched transfusions still resulted in adequate increments. There is no indication for HLA-matched platelets in patients with negative antibody screens.Clinical epidemiolog

    New methods for using computer-aided detection information for the detection of lung nodules on chest radiographs

    Item does not contain fulltextObjective: To investigate two new methods of using computer-aided detection (CAD) system information for the detection of lung nodules on chest radiographs. We evaluated an interactive CAD application and an independent combination of radiologists and CAD scores. Methods: 300 posteroanterior and lateral digital chest radiographs were selected, including 111 with a solitary pulmonary nodule (average diameter, 16 mm). Both nodule and control cases were verified by CT. Six radiologists and six residents reviewed the chest radiographs without CAD and with CAD (ClearRead +Detectℱ 5.2; Riverain Technologies, Miamisburg, OH) in two reading sessions. The CAD system was used in an interactive manner; CAD marks, accompanied by a score of suspicion, remained hidden unless the location was queried by the radiologist. Jackknife alternative free response receiver operating characteristics multireader multicase analysis was used to measure detection performance. Area under the curve (AUC) and partial AUC (pAUC) between a specificity of 80\% and 100\% served as the measure for detection performance. We also evaluated the results of a weighted combination of CAD scores and reader scores, at the location of reader findings. Results: AUC for the observers without CAD was 0.824. No significant improvement was seen with interactive use of CAD (AUC = 0.834; p = 0.15). Independent combination significantly improved detection performance (AUC = 0.834; p = 0.006). pAUCs without and with interactive CAD were similar (0.128), but improved with independent combination (0.137). Conclusion: Interactive CAD did not improve reader performance for the detection of lung nodules on chest radiographs. Independent combination of reader and CAD scores improved the detection performance of lung nodules. Advances in knowledge: (1) Interactive use of currently available CAD software did not improve the radiologists' detection performance of lung nodules on chest radiographs. (2) Independently combining the interpretations of the radiologist and the CAD system improved detection of lung nodules on chest radiographs
