Patterns of Nonlinearity in the Ratio of Stimulus Accommodative Convergence to Accommodation
Background: This study disputes the assumption that the stimulus accommodative convergence to accommodation (AC/A) ratio is linear.
Subjects and Methods: Accommodative convergence induced by minus lenses of varying power (-1.50 to -6.00DS, at intervals of 1.50DS) is measured on the Synoptophore in a group of 96 non-strabismic children aged 6 years 3 months to 11 years 2 months (mean 8.81 ± 1.43 years). Results: The mean AC/A ratios obtained with a stimulus to accommodation of 1.5D; 3.00D; 4.5D; 6.00D are 2.25 ± 1.47; 2.88 ± 1.15; 3.28 ± 1.02; 3.49 ± 0.85 respectively. Five patterns of change in AC/A ratio with stiumulus are described.
Conclusion: Further studies in all age groups are necessary to investigate the non-linearity of the AC/A ratio over repeated measurements and the repeatability of the testing method
Foreground removal from WMAP 7yr polarization maps using an MLP neural network
One of the fundamental problems in extracting the cosmic microwave background
signal (CMB) from millimeter/submillimeter observations is the pollution by
emission from the Milky Way: synchrotron, free-free, and thermal dust emission.
To extract the fundamental cosmological parameters from CMB signal, it is
mandatory to minimize this pollution since it will create systematic errors in
the CMB power spectra. In previous investigations, it has been demonstrated
that the neural network method provide high quality CMB maps from temperature
data. Here the analysis is extended to polarization maps. As a concrete
example, the WMAP 7-year polarization data, the most reliable determination of
the polarization properties of the CMB, has been analysed. The analysis has
adopted the frequency maps, noise models, window functions and the foreground
models as provided by the WMAP Team, and no auxiliary data is included. Within
this framework it is demonstrated that the network can extract the CMB
polarization signal with no sign of pollution by the polarized foregrounds. The
errors in the derived polarization power spectra are improved compared to the

Inflationary perturbations from a potential with a step
We use a numerical code to compute the density perturbations generated during
an inflationary epoch which includes a spontaneous symmetry breaking phase
transition. A sharp step in the inflaton potential generates dependent
oscillations in the spectrum of primordial density perturbations. The amplitude
and extent in wavenumber of these oscillations depends on both the magnitude
and gradient of the step in the inflaton potential. We show that observations
of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy place strong constraints on the

Calibration of the Gamma-RAy Polarimeter Experiment (GRAPE) at a Polarized Hard X-Ray Beam
The Gamma-RAy Polarimeter Experiment (GRAPE) is a concept for an astronomical
hard X-ray Compton polarimeter operating in the 50 - 500 keV energy band. The
instrument has been optimized for wide-field polarization measurements of
transient outbursts from energetic astrophysical objects such as gamma-ray
bursts and solar flares. The GRAPE instrument is composed of identical modules,
each of which consists of an array of scintillator elements read out by a
multi-anode photomultiplier tube (MAPMT). Incident photons Compton scatter in
plastic scintillator elements and are subsequently absorbed in inorganic
scintillator elements; a net polarization signal is revealed by a
characteristic asymmetry in the azimuthal scattering angles. We have
constructed a prototype GRAPE module containing a single CsI(Na) calorimeter
element, at the center of the MAPMT, surrounded by 60 plastic elements. The
prototype has been combined with custom readout electronics and software to
create a complete "engineering model" of the GRAPE instrument. This engineering
model has been calibrated using a nearly 100% polarized hard X-ray beam at the
Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. We find modulation
factors of 0.46 +/- 0.06 and 0.48 +/- 0.03 at 69.5 keV and 129.5 keV,
respectively, in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. In this paper we
present details of the beam test, data analysis, and simulations, and discuss
the implications of our results for the further development of the GRAPE

Solar Energy: Incentives to Promote PV in EU27
The growth in the use of renewable energies in the EU has been remarkable. Among these energies is PV. The average annual growth rate for the EU-27 countries in installed PV capacity in the period 2005-2012 was 41.2%. While the installed capacity of PV has reached almost 82 % of National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) targets for the EU-27 countries for 2020, it is still far from being used at its full potential. Over recent years, several measures have been adopted in the EU to enhance and promote PV. This paper undertakes a complete review of the state of PV power in Europe and the measures taken to date to promote it in EU-27. 25 countries have adopted measures to promote PV. The most widespread measure to promote PV use is Feed- in Tariffs. Tariffs are normally adjusted, in a decreasing manner, annually. Nevertheless, currently, seven countries have decided to accelerate this decrease rate in view of cost reduction of the installations and of higher efficiencies. The second instrument used to promote PV in the EU-27 countries is the concession of subsidies. Nevertheless, subsidies have the disadvantage of being closely linked to budgetary resources and therefore to budgetary constraints. In most EU countries, subsidies for renewable energy for PV are being lowered. Twelve EU-27 countries adopted tax measures. Low-interest loans and green certificate systems were only sparingly used
Primordial power spectrum from WMAP
The observed angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background
temperature anisotropy, , is a convolution of a cosmological radiative
transport kernel with an assumed primordial power spectrum of inhomogeneities.
Exquisite measurements of over a wide range of multipoles from the
Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) has opened up the possibility to
deconvolve the primordial power spectrum for a given set of cosmological
parameters (base model). We implement an improved (error sensitive)
Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum
from WMAP assuming a concordance cosmological model. The most prominent feature
of the recovered is a sharp, infra-red cut off on the horizon scale. The
resultant spectrum using the recovered spectrum has a likelihood far
better than a scale invariant, or, `best fit' scale free spectra
( {\it w.r.t.} Harrison Zeldovich, and, {\it w.r.t.} power law with ). The recovered has a
localized excess just below the cut-off which leads to great improvement of
likelihood over the simple monotonic forms of model infra-red cut-off spectra
considered in the post WMAP literature. The recovered , in particular,
the form of infra-red cut-off is robust to small changes in the cosmological
parameters. We show that remarkably similar form of infra-red cutoff is known
to arise in very reasonable extensions and refinements of the predictions from
simple inflationary scenarios. Our method can be extended to other cosmological
observations such as the measured matter power spectrum and, in particular, the

A systematic review of the effects of exercise interventions on body composition in HIV+ adults
Over the years, physical activity and exercise have been used to positively impact the health and quality of life of persons infected with HIV and, more recently, has been associated with a spectrum of body composition changes. The aim of this review was to examine the effects of various exercise interventions on body composition in HIV positive adults, using a search strategy of randomized, controlled trials (RCTs). A systematic review was performed by five independent reviewers using a predetermined protocol adapted from previous research for assessing the articles for inclusion, the extracted data, and methodological quality. Eight RCTs involving 430 (26% female) HIV positive adults performing exercise a minimum of thrice weekly for at least six weeks were finally selected: Four were progressive resistance training (PRT) studies, three were aerobic training (AT) studies, and one involved yoga. In the PRT studies, there were significant increases in three anthropometric measures, namely, body mass, sum of skinfolds and sum of limb girths. In the AT studies, significant decreases were found in seven anthropometric measures, namely, body mass index, waist-hip ratio, body mass, triceps skinfold, waist circumference and sum of skinfolds. With yoga, the changes were nonsignificant. Exercise contributes to improved body composition and, when applied safely, appears to be beneficial for adults living with HIV/AIDS. However, these findings should be interpreted cautiously due to the relatively few RCTs published to date. Future studies would benefit from increased attention to sample size, female participants, participant follow-up, complete statistical analysis and intention-to-treat analysis.Scopu
RITUAL, TIME, AND ENTERNITY
It is argued here that the construction of time and eternity are among ritual's entailments. In dividing continuous duration into distinct periods ritual distinguishes two temporal conditions: (1) that prevailing in mundane periods and (2) that prevailing during the intervals between them. Differences in the frequency, length, and relationship among the rituals constituting different liturgical orders are considered, as are differences between mundane periods and ritual's intervals with respect to social relations, cognitive modes, meaningfulness, and typical interactive frequencies. Periods, it is observed, relate to intervals as everchanging to never-changing, and close relationships of never changing to eternity, eternity to sanctity, and sanctity to truth are proposed. Codes of Fair Competition: The National Recovery Act, 1933-1935, and the Women’s Dress Manufacturing Industry
Controversial issues prevalent in today’s ready-to-wear apparel industry include the right of workers to join unions, the proliferation of sweatshops and sweatshop conditions, and design piracy. The idea of forming codes of conduct to establish criteria of ethical business practices is not new to the apparel industry. Indeed, the women’s dress manufacturing industry discussed and debated codes of fair competition under the New Deal Policies of the National Recovery Act (NRA) of 1933 to 1935. Primary sources for this study included governmental hearings in the establishment of the NRA Dress Code, The New York Times, Women’s Wear Daily, and the Journal of the Patent Office Society. The history of the NRA codes implemented in the U.S. women’s ready-to-wear apparel industry provides an important case study highlighting the difficulties and complexities of creating and achieving industry-wide standard practices through self-regulation. The failure of the NRA demonstrates that even with the joint cooperation of industry, labor, and consumer groups and the backing of the force of law, codes of fair competition proved impossible to enforce
