    Avalanche noise characteristics of single Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As(0.3

    Avalanche multiplication and excess noise have been measured on a series of Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As-GaAs and GaAs-Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As (x=0.3,0.45, and 0.6) single heterojunction p/sup +/-i-n/sup +/ diodes. In some devices excess noise is lower than in equivalent homojunction devices with avalanche regions composed of either of the constituent materials, the heterojunction with x=0.3 showing the greatest improvement. Excess noise deteriorates with higher values of x because of the associated increase in hole ionization in the Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As layer. It also depends critically upon the carrier injection conditions and Monte Carlo simulations show that this dependence results from the variation in the degree of noisy feedback processes on the position of the injected carriers

    A glance of child’s play privacy in smart toys

A smart toy is defined as a device consisting of a physical toy component that connects to one or more toy computing services to facilitate gameplay in the Cloud through networking and sensory technologies to enhance the functionality of a traditional toy. A smart toy in this context can be effectively considered an Internet of Things (IoT) with Artificial Intelligence (AI) which can provide Augmented Reality (AR) experiences to users. Referring to the direction of the United States Federal Trade Commission Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the European Union Data Protection Directive (EUDPD), this study adopts the definition of a child to be an individual under the age of 13 years old. In this study, the first assumption is that children do not understand the concept of privacy. The second assumption is that children will disclose as much information to smart toys as they can trust. Breaches of privacy can result in physical safety of child user, e.g., child predators. While the parents/legal guardians of a child strive to ensure their child’s physical and online safety and privacy, there is no common approach for these parents/guardians to study the information flow between their child and the smart toys they interact with.     Intelligent multi-agent collaboration model for smart home IoT security

    © 2018 IEEE. While the Internet of Things (IoT) continue to extend deeper into the daily lives of people, the domain of the smart home offers a unique need for security. Traditional firewalls and antivirus are not sufficient to protect the connected home from security threats, and to date, there have been limited solutions provided for this problem. This paper explores the recent works in this area and presents a new approach towards securing smart home networks through multi-agent collaboration. The model uses Beliefs, Desires, and Intentions (BDI) architecture for intelligent agent decision making, as well as a multi-agent collaboration model for achieving mutual security goals within the smart home network. For initial proof of concept, we provide a use case demonstrating the coordination of the threat response decision between operational availability and security risk agents as a qualitative coalitional game. This model can also be extended to other areas such as threat modeling, vulnerability scanning, and patching, as well as more advanced threat engagement and distraction. Throughout, we also consider operational goals of convenience and availability as required for a usability perspective within the smart home environment

    Latent profile analysis of the physical self-description among Chinese Adolescents

    The purposes of this study were to validate the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ-S) and examine the physical self-description profiles using Latent Profile Analysis with a Chinese sample. A total of 744 secondary school students in China took part in the study. While the results provided support for internal reliability and discriminant validity of the PSDQ-S, they indicated convergent validity required further testing. In addition, three distinct profiles were identified with unique physical self-concept and different levels of physical activity participation. The study showed the PDSQ-S is useful in differentiating groups of adolescents with different levels of physical self-concept

    Autologous serum therapy in recalcitrant laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis-induced neurotrophic epitheliopathy

    AbstractBackground/PurposeTo evaluate the efficacy of autologous serum eye drops for patients with recalcitrant laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK)-induced neurotrophic epitheliopathy (LINE) unresponsive to conventional treatment, and to determine the possible predisposing risk factors of these patients.MethodsWe enrolled 10 consecutive patients (20 eyes) undergoing femtosecond-assisted myopic LASIK surgery presenting with recalcitrant LINE for > 1 year. Another 340 patients (713 eyes) receiving femtosecond-assisted myopic LASIK without recalcitrant LINE were set as controls. Possible risk factors associated with recalcitrant LINE were investigated. Twenty percent autologous serum treatment was prescribed to 20 eyes. The efficacy of autologous serum was assessed with ocular surface conditions, tear function, and the change of best-corrected visual acuity.ResultsAge older than 30 years [odds ratio (OR) = 7.74; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.74–34.50], flap thickness < 110 μm (OR = 3.47; 95% CI, 1.22–9.73), and a flap diameter < 8.5 mm (OR = 5.38; 95% CI, 1.95–14.85) pose higher risks in femtosecond laser-assisted myopic LASIK. All eyes (100%) achieved remission after autologous serum treatment. The visual acuity before treatment was 0.49 ± 0.41 in LogMAR, and the visual acuity after treatment was 0.14 ± 0.22 in LogMAR. Time to achieve remission was 8.26 ± 11.87 weeks. Mean relapse-free survival after discontinuing autologous serum was 47 weeks.ConclusionRisk factors of recalcitrant LINE in femtosecond laser-assisted myopic LASIK were identified as older age, a thinner flap (<110 μm), and a small flap diameter (<8.5 mm). Autologous serum eye drops can effectively improve corneal surface conditions and postoperative visual acuity

    A study of children facial recognition for privacy in smart TV

Smart TV provides computing and connectivity capabilities with access to online services, such as video on demand, online games, and even sports and healthcare activities. For example, Google Smart TV, which is based on Google Android, integrates into the users’ daily physical activities through its ability to extract and access context information dependent on the surrounding environment and to react accordingly via built-in camera and sensors. Without a viable privacy protection system in place, however, the expanding use of Smart TV can lead to privacy violations through tracking and user profiling by broadcasters and others. This becomes of particular concern when underage users such as children who may not fully understand the concept of privacy are involved in using the Smart TV services. In this study, we consider digital imaging and ways to identify and properly tag pictures of children in order to prevent unwanted disclosure of personal information. We have conducted a preliminary experiment on the effectiveness of facial recognition technology in Smart TV where experimental recognition of child face presence in feedback image streams is conducted through the Microsoft’s Face Application Programming Interface

    Trodusquemine displaces protein misfolded oligomers from cell membranes and abrogates their cytotoxicity through a generic mechanism

    The onset and progression of numerous protein misfolding diseases are associated with the presence of oligomers formed during the aberrant aggregation of several different proteins, including amyloid-ß (Aß) in Alzheimer’s disease and a-synuclein (aS) in Parkinson’s disease. These small, soluble aggregates are currently major targets for drug discovery. In this study, we show that trodusquemine, a naturally-occurring aminosterol, markedly reduces the cytotoxicity of aS, Aß and HypF-N oligomers to human neuroblastoma cells by displacing the oligomers from cell membranes in the absence of any substantial morphological and structural changes to the oligomers. These results indicate that the reduced toxicity results from a mechanism that is common to oligomers from different proteins, shed light on the origin of the toxicity of the most deleterious species associated with protein aggregation and suggest that aminosterols have the therapeutically-relevant potential to protect cells from the oligomer-induced cytotoxicity associated with numerous protein misfolding diseases

    Purpose: To describe and categorize detailed components of databases in the Neurological and Mental Health Global Epidemiology Network (NeuroGEN). Methods: An online 132-item questionnaire was sent to key researchers and data custodians of NeuroGEN in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. From the responses, we assessed data characteristics including population coverage, data follow-up, clinical information, validity of diagnoses, medication use and data latency. We also evaluated the possibility of conversion into a common data model (CDM) to implement a federated network approach. Moreover, we used radar charts to visualize the data capacity assessments, based on different perspectives. Results: The results indicated that the 15 databases covered approximately 320 million individuals, included in 7 nationwide claims databases from Australia, Finland, South Korea, Taiwan and the US, 6 population-based electronic health record databases from Hong Kong, Scotland, Taiwan, the Netherlands and the UK, and 2 biomedical databases from Taiwan and the UK. Conclusion: The 15 databases showed good potential for a federated network approach using a common data model. Our study provided publicly accessible information on these databases for those seeking to employ real-world data to facilitate current assessment and future development of treatments for neurological and mental disorders.</p
