Rapid tranquillisation for agitated patients in emergency psychiatric rooms: a randomised trial of midazolam versus haloperidol plus promethazine
OBJECTIVE: To compare two widely used drug treatments for people with aggression or agitation due to mental illness.
DESIGN: Pragmatic, randomised clinical trial.
SETTING: Three psychiatric emergency rooms in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
SUBJECTS: 301 aggressive or agitated people.
INTERVENTIONS: Open treatment with intramuscular midazolam or intramuscular haloperidol plus promethazine.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Patients tranquil or sedated at 20 minutes. Secondary outcomes: patients tranquil or asleep by 40, 60, and 120 minutes; restrained or given extra drugs within 2 hours; severe adverse events; another episode of agitation or aggression; needing extra visits from doctor during first 24 hours; overall antipsychotic load in first 24 hours; and not discharged by two weeks
Signal and System Approximation from General Measurements
In this paper we analyze the behavior of system approximation processes for
stable linear time-invariant (LTI) systems and signals in the Paley-Wiener
space PW_\pi^1. We consider approximation processes, where the input signal is
not directly used to generate the system output, but instead a sequence of
numbers is used that is generated from the input signal by measurement
functionals. We consider classical sampling which corresponds to a pointwise
evaluation of the signal, as well as several more general measurement
functionals. We show that a stable system approximation is not possible for
pointwise sampling, because there exist signals and systems such that the
approximation process diverges. This remains true even with oversampling.
However, if more general measurement functionals are considered, a stable
approximation is possible if oversampling is used. Further, we show that
without oversampling we have divergence for a large class of practically

Limiting Carleman weights and anisotropic inverse problems
In this article we consider the anisotropic Calderon problem and related
inverse problems. The approach is based on limiting Carleman weights,
introduced in Kenig-Sjoestrand-Uhlmann (Ann. of Math. 2007) in the Euclidean
case. We characterize those Riemannian manifolds which admit limiting Carleman
weights, and give a complex geometrical optics construction for a class of such
manifolds. This is used to prove uniqueness results for anisotropic inverse
problems, via the attenuated geodesic X-ray transform. Earlier results in
dimension were restricted to real-analytic metrics.Comment: 58 page
Engineering Branch-and-Cut Algorithms for the Equicut Problem
A minimum equicut of an edge-weighted graph is a partition of the nodes of the graph into two sets of equal size such hat the sum of the weights of edges joining nodes in different partitions is minimum. We compare basic linear and semidefnite relaxations for the equicut problem, and and that linear bounds are competitive with the corresponding semidefnite ones but can be computed much faster. Motivated by an application of equicut in theoretical physics, we revisit an approach by Brunetta et al. and present an enhanced branch-and-cut algorithm. Our computational results suggest that the proposed branch-andcut algorithm has a better performance than the algorithm of Brunetta et al.. Further, it is able to solve to optimality in reasonable time several instances with more than 200 nodes from the physics application
Age-related shift in LTD is dependent on neuronal adenosine A(2A) receptors interplay with mGluR5 and NMDA receptors
Synaptic dysfunction plays a central role in Alzheimer's disease (AD), since it drives the cognitive decline. An association between a polymorphism of the adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) encoding gene-ADORA2A, and hippocampal volume in AD patients was recently described. In this study, we explore the synaptic function of A2AR in age-related conditions. We report, for the first time, a significant overexpression of A2AR in hippocampal neurons of aged humans, which is aggravated in AD patients. A similar profile of A2AR overexpression in rats was sufficient to drive age-like memory impairments in young animals and to uncover a hippocampal LTD-to-LTP shift. This was accompanied by increased NMDA receptor gating, dependent on mGluR5 and linked to enhanced Ca(2+) influx. We confirmed the same plasticity shift in memory-impaired aged rats and APP/PS1 mice modeling AD, which was rescued upon A2AR blockade. This A2AR/mGluR5/NMDAR interaction might prove a suitable alternative for regulating aberrant mGluR5/NMDAR signaling in AD without disrupting their constitutive activity
Lime mud from cellulose industry as raw material in cement mortars
This study reports the use of lime mud (LM) in cement-based-mortars. Lime mud is a waste generated in the production of cellulose by the kraft mill process. It is mainly composed of CaCO3, a small amount of magnesium carbonate and other trace minerals. Mortars were prepared by adding different amounts of LM (10, 20 and 30% by weight of cement) in dry weight. The mortar compositions were evaluated through rheology and flow table measurements, assuring that all the samples exhibited adequate conditions for testing in both equipments. The hardened state properties were also evaluated through mechanical strengths at 7, 28 and 90 days of curing. Following a waste management solution perspective, this work intend to provide a general evaluation of LM application in cement based mortars, looking at both fresh and hardened properties in order to guarantee that the final application requirements are not hindered
The Williams Scale of Attitude toward Paganism: development and application among British Pagans
This article builds on the tradition of attitudinal measures of religiosity established by Leslie Francis and colleagues with the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity (and reflected in the Sahin-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Islam, the Katz-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Judaism, and the Santosh-Francis Scale of Attitude toward Hinduism) by introducing a new measure to assess the attitudinal disposition of Pagans. A battery of items was completed by 75 members of a Pagan Summer Camp. These items were reduced to produce a 21-item scale that measured aspects of Paganism concerned with: the God/Goddess, worshipping, prayer, and coven. The scale recorded an alpha coefficient of 0.93. Construct validity of the Williams Scale of Attitude toward Paganism was demonstrated by the clear association with measures of participation in private rituals
